- Today we are venturing into new territory and are all about hexagons and hexagon quilting. Our crazy quilt and patchwork tutorials have been popular, if you have not seen them you can catch them here:
• Patchwork and quilting...
Quilting is a craft that we really have wanted to explore more as it is a lot of fun!
Some time ago we received hexagons from Kate @thelasthomelyhouse in the mail, it was such a nice gesture of Kate to send us the hexagons. Since then we have been planning what type of hexagon quilting project we should do with the hexagons. As they were a gift we wanted to do something really special.
You all know that we are big fans of thrift stores, upcycling and repurposing items, and that put us on a thought. In this tutorial we show you how we reuse old embroidered table cloths to start a beautiful hexagon quilting project.

Of course we all love Kate ))))) She is us. Thank you for rescuing damaged embroideries to make into Hexagon quilt. There are beautiful textiles that cannot be restored, but they can be rescued for this )))). Splendid idea )))).
Another Kate on the other side of the ocean.
I LOVE how you've taken this in a new direction! Have you guys got a vertical design board to pin your hexies up so you can create a design? I can cut you more templates when you run out of those - I have more children's books! I have just finished my granddaughters quilt - it took me three years - so you take your time! much love xxx Kate
Hi Kate! I need to go back to your videos and find out how you get the paper out. Love your podcast, thank you.
Kate, the lime green sofa is going by now. Some chocolate for the gentleman. We will save you some and bring it to you on our next round to your place. Keep the tea warm. We'll want a spot of It!
Agnes' quilt is to die for! Stunning! I've enjoyed seeing its progress. Wishing you all the best, always. 😊❤
You’ve started something Kate. Arne & Carlos introduced you to me (and thousands of other subscribers). Love your UA-cam channel.
Kate love that they are sharing your hexis technique with the world. Mariaknits27 💃🏻💕🧵🧶🏠📚
Several years ago my sister-in-law jumped up from the table saying "you're crafty, this would be something interesting to you" and came back in the kitchen with a box of things she found and brought home. In the box were many scraps of fabric and also a small bag with a few pieces of fabric sewn together and written on with pen. It was a quilting lesson by someone to teach someone else how to sew the fabrics together. They had written on the fabric, this much seam allowance and so on. My sister-in-law gave me the whole box and many, many months later I had a quilt made with all the fabrics in the box in honour of the lady I never knew but felt so connected to during that time. I did the exact same thing you are doing now. A hexagonal quilt in English paper piecing. It is on my bed right now and I will be crawling under it tonight. Thank you for reminding me of that lovely, slightly sad time. I hope that lady knows that someone loved and felt inspired by her efforts.
I love that you’re giving new life to these old textiles that were originally made with such love and care!
Lovely friendship between beautiful people. Love Kate, Arne, and Carlos.
❤️
I’m thrilled you care and taking time to repurpose those cloths
Thank you for showing another way to do hexagons. Absolutely love your desires and ideas in using thrift store finds in your projects. Gives me the itch to start something new.
What a wonderful idea! I am working on a hexagon quilt of my own, also inspired by Kate. As a fellow thrifter, I salute your ingenuity in recycling vintage linens whose aesthetic no longer suits today's consumers.
I enjoy watching your ideas and new designs- Wednesday and Sundays-. Fun to see and learn- thank you!
That is a great idea. I can't wait to see the finished quilt. I love Kate. I found you by watching her make your star light for Christmas during the pandemic.❤😊
Synchronicity! I am sorting the pieces from the jigsaw puzzle I just got from Kate while I watch you two having fun with her hexagons. At the same time I am soaking some sweaters I just inherited. They were made by my grandmother (who died in 2000) for my aunt (who just died this past October at the age of 96). I am sure they are over 30 years old. I am the keeper of the family textiles, including the embroidered table runners, as no one else is very interested in them. I'm honored by the position! You two and Kate add so much to our lives by keeping our hands busy with beautiful and happy things. Please never stop! ❤❤❤
Absolutely lovely🌸. I love everything this quilt represents…..friendship, thrifting, reusing and textiles. Just perfect!
You Tube at its best! Three creative people sharing and teaching your passions with us and giving us the inspiration to have a go. I enjoy watching Kate's channel too. Take care, love from the UK!
Thank you, thank you! We've been trying to come up with a way to give new life to the dozens of embroidered pillow cases our grandmother left us. This is the best idea yet.
Thank you so very much, you two. Happy spring 🌼🌱❤️
Happy spring
I love this episode! These beautiful old embroideries are finding new life in your hexagons! Please do show updates as your quilt develops!
I love your idea of using old thrift store textiles to make an English paper piecing quilt. You guys are amazing!
Arne, to eliminate paper clips and hand stitching, you can use a fabric glue stick which is readily available in craft stores. It just makes the process easier and faster. You only need a very small amount on each edge and the paper template will pull out and can be used several more times.
What a great idea! To use old family embroidered things people don’t use. To pass a little memento of what “grandma did when she was young”.
What a great idea to go to thrift shops for old embroidery, I just love that! I love Kates green couch and I do epp on the couch with her!❤😊
It saddens me so much to see that people do not show appreciation for these family treasures that someone did with so much patience and skill. So, I am happy to see people like you who appreciate this work and use it to create something else just as beautiful. Thank you for not letting these pieces be abandoned and forgotten.
❤️
English Paper Piecing is one of my favourite hobbies. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished quilt. 👍🏻🧵
"Everything old, is new again" thanks guys, enjoyed this video very much❤
You are welcome Kim!
What a lovely idea to make a hexagon quilt. I think I'm going to steal your idea. Collect these doilies is already fun. Thanks for sharing dear friends. ❤️
So fun... You two are lovely!!! So excited to see the technique
Love the collaboration between two lovely channels... Bravo on the reuse of these fabulous pieces 👏
Quilting✅ hexies ✅ Kate✅ Reworked textiles✅ great synchronicity, excited to see more 👏👏👏 Helen, WV
I love relaxing on Kate's lime green sofa with a cup of tea, and I love visiting with you both as well. I can't wait to see the finished quilt!
I don’t know how I missed seeing this until now! You are both so creative! I started a hexagon quilt along with Kate but put it down and haven’t picked it up in several years! Please film more quilting videos! I love everything you do but find the quilting so relaxing! Thank you for doing this!
I have so many of these that i inherited. Always wanted to use them but never knew exactly what to do with them. You have inspired me! You guys are the best.
Kate, Arne and Carlos are the very best of you tube!!!! XOXO
Oh my goodness!!!! I love this SO much!! My first granddaughter is coming soon, and I've been trying to find just the perfect quilt project for her baby blanket. THIS is it! I have a box full of her Great Grandmother's vintage embroidered doilies, table runners etc. This will be the perfect way to use some of them!! THANK you for sharing this!
I absolutely LOVE this deconstruction and reconstruction ( perfect description, Carlos!) utilizing Kate’s hexagons and the thrift shop embroideries! So many possibilities!
Thank you so much, there are endless possibilities!
What a wonderful way to use these lovely old fabrics. I love Kate too !
We love Kate! She is so relaxing to watch. ❤We love you all too and enjoy your knitting and Dolly Parton cooking:)
❤️
Wonderful idea. Fun . I watch both Kate and you. Thank you for the enjoyment
I love your use of these fabrics for the paper piecing! Beautiful, I will have to incorporate some of those in my paper stitching ❤❤
It's so interesting to see how you envision the hexagons versus how Kate makes hers. Very creative. Looking forward to seeing your progression.
I found you guys thru Kate a couple years ago and haven’t missed a video of your guys yet 😊
You two and Kate are my heaven online =) Thank you!
Such a beautiful way to use vintage embroidered linens ... which I love collecting from thrift stores too! ♥
I love Ms Kate!
I’m sure I will grow to love y’all as well 😊
That is a brilliant idea, and so beautiful. I can't wait to see your process. I enjoy watching you both. With such good ideas. Have a wonderful day. 😊
I'm 70 now, I'll have to live forever to do all these beautiful projects. I also go to the thrift store and get denim jeans and old shirts and make quilts and aprons.
I absolutely loved watching Kate make her hexagon quilt for her granddaughter. It is so great that you are also using her gifted hexagon's for such a creative project. Working together will make it that much more fun. It took Kate 3 years to finish so you have no time constraints other than wanting to see the results. It will be a beautiful heirloom piece for your home. I am always amazed at how you use thrift store finds and turn them into fantastic new projects. Love it.
No rush!
What a lovely joint collaboration to recreating a textile piece of a handmade work of art. Since watching Kate I have learned to also appreciate the recycled use of old children’s books. Thank you for showing us how to cut and resize hexagons to create larger cutting areas and vice versa.🪡💕🧵I have many family heirlooms to sift through now in my fine linen drawers. To be able to make hexagon doilies for furniture mats is also an option.
Love Kate and her lime sofa and love you, too!
❤️❤️
What a great idea to recycle old dresser scarves, hankies, or tablecloths. It will be a beautiful quilt. I follow Kate as well. Thanks for sharing 😊
I know this is a long term project and I look forward to seeing your progress and the grand finale of a finished quilt.
Thank you, so do we😅
Love the quilting projects and focus on sustainability. Found this via Kate!
Welcome!
I discovered your channel when you made a crazy quilt and you recommended Kate so I found her. All my UA-cam experience dates from your crazy quilt so I enjoy seeing you working on another quilt. I watch a lot of UA-cam and I have you to thank for it. So much to learn from so many who want to share their passions with the world.
this was such a fun episode. I have many old, embroidered linens . I bought them after seeing them lying forlornly in thrift shops and could not bear to leave them there. I am going to try this! Thanks for the inspiration!
You are welcome!
It makes me happy to see that you are re- using these beautiful doilies , which many just throw away. I think people forget that some person has put much effort and time in creating them
This will be a beautiful quilt, I can't wait to see it finished. Love you two 😍
I'm not a knitter but thoroughly enjoyed this tutorial...I have subscribed now so I don't miss any episodes. Thank you so much.
Thank you Sue
This is a FABULOUS idea! Kate inspired me to start English Paper Piecing, and now you both have inspired me to use my grandmother’s handwork, instead of it staying in a box. Thank you! I would love to see more crochet, sewing, and cooking. ❤ An idea for the rectangle piece that is too pretty to cut up- embroider something in the center, and then make it the center of a small pillow.
❤️❤️
Just what I was thinking!
I would like to see how you are going to finish the edges once it is all pieced together. I have a quilt top all pieced together but I’m not sure how to finish it. Love watching you guys from Minnesota!
What an amazing idea, I absolutely love it. It opens up so many ideas of things you can re-use. Pretty pillow cases, duvet covers, shirts etc. You are only limited by your imagination. Loved watching you two for the first time! 👍
Welcome to our channel Sharon!
This is going to be fabulous. What a great use for the old no longer in fashion cloth pieces! You two (and Kate) are brilliant!
Kate is such a lively lady, so pleased she is friends with 2 lovely gents. Quilting is so not my thing, but you make it look so easy ❤
It is a lot of fun!
What a wonderful idea! I like how you incorporated the bigger pieces in a bigger hexagon that fits with the smaller ones. I am going to use it in one of my hexagon projects!
Yes, I too met Kate through you guys... Lovely lady I watch her every week too.... I started a hexagon quilt, I have about 100, 😊 but it's a long term project....
Thank you for sharing your talents, this project is beautiful!
LoveKate ,that’s how I found you guys… what a beautiful idea..
Oooh!!!🤩
I love this way of using as much of the embroidery as possible!
😘
I too am a big fan of Kate. Your Hexie design using embroidered fabric is brand idea. Can't wait to see final creation. Sandra from Tennessee USA
I am also a follower of Kate. I love her videos on the English paper quilting and Kate's hexagon quilt making. I really appreciate and enjoy your idea of using antique linen embroidery. You really have a good process tutorial .Thank you so much. Again a great friendship sharing of a great creative art, Kate, Arne and Carlos.

We need a Hexagon cruise with Kate too!
I enjoyed this very much. I look forward to the 2nd installment. Thank you
you were SO lucky to get a lockdown! I had to work triple shifts then, never got any days off. I envy those who got so much free vacation time!
Yes! I love the quilting of repurposed fabric!
Kate will be impressed. Beautiful idea.
Such a great idea! Kate is so generous to send the hexagons to you... reminds me of her hexagon quilt for her granddaughter. Good luck with this amazing quilt! Best wishes to both of you all the way from Sri Lanka!
Thank you Nirupa!
This is indeed a time-consuming project but it will turn out so gorgeous with all the embroidery to fabric. I've never seen one done like that before. Really looking forward to seeing the next video this project
Thank you, we have filmed an update that is scheduled for the fall.
I recently started following Kate and decided to start a Hexi quilt that I had been saving fabrics for. Now, you have given me a new idea and I may be working on more than one. It will be lovely when you complete it!
beautiful! looking forward to seeing more progress on these lovely hexagons! love watching Kate at The Last Homely House too
Love those beautiful curtains. You guys have the touch. 🫶
Thank you so much for this! I always learn something new !Much love from Arizona !
Oh WOW!!! As someone who has hand pieced a Hexagon quilt, I am astounded!!! You are so creative!! I am so excited to see you sitting on the Lime Green Sofa and working on this!! It's amazing!!!🤗💖
Lovely and your collaboration and embracing the repurpose of things. 😊
So clever. I never thought of reusing hand work in that way. Can't wait to watch it grow.
I LOVE that you use paper clips, that is a great idea and it seems like it would be esier and damage the fabric less than pins. Great idea guys!
Those make beautiful hexagons! Much love!
since i do not knit, seeing the handwork is wonderful. Love you guys. Hello from Tennessee
Thank you Dawn!
The tiny pieces would make wonderful quilt for your doll house. ❤
That is such a great suggestion
I love your twist and can't wait to see this come together. 💕
Excellent idea to recycle and enjoy someone else's handiwork. Imagine all the stories that will be part of that quilt!
Yes, and it could be family heirloom for some.
So excited to see your fabulous new project! I found Kate through you two and have also been inspired to start an EPP hexie quilt using fabric leftovers from other quilts I’ve made. Have never hand pieced before but I love it. I may steal your idea to use with some family vintage linens that I didn’t want to give away but wasn’t sure what to do with. You guys always inspire me!
I follow Kate and love the quilt she made using hexagons. I love your creativity in using nice hand stitched pieces for a different look I hope you show your progress from time to time.
What a fabulous idea for breathing new life into pieces of fabric that don't fit modern aesthetics. I turned machine embroidered pillowcases into slip covers for metal coat hangers.
This is more my speed, love how you can and do so many crafts❤
I really love watching your videos. So creative. You have so much fun together creating. Inspiring. Please keep sharing! Zetta in Oregon, USA
So glad you boys are starting this project! I’ve made one hexagon quilt which we call “Grandmother’s Flower Garden” in the states. I’ve been quilting since the 80s when there was a revival of quilting. How ingenious and frugal to use your thrift shop finds with the embroidery motifs. Your quilt will be unique and beautiful! 💕
Brilliant idea!! Great Job Carlos & Arne!
I love working with hexagons. I started patchworking back in the early l950s using this method and a large bag of 1930/40s dressmaking scraps. I was 12 years old! I actually never finished that project but I did it again in the 70s also with a large bag of scraps saved from being thrown into landfill and I made a circular skirt which I wore for many years. I I continued with hexagons for a few years, and enjoyed using the fabric patterns to create other designs as you are doing here. I am so looking forward to following this project. And the paper hexagons are definitely worthy of preserving in a scrapbook too. The paperclips are a great idea! 😀❤
Inspiring to watch creative people at work!!
So interesting to see how inspiration and your foundational design backgrounds collide. This is a fantastic idea for people wanting to do a quilt from favorite clothing, especially children's shirts that have favorite characters, special events, and memories from vacation spots. It would come together much more quickly as well. LOVE this. It will be beautiful! As relaxing as Kate's lime green sofa.
Yes - my mum has kept some fabrics from when we were kids and this would be a great way for us to use them up and also work on the project together. My mum has always wanted to make a patch work quilt out of this kids fabric she saved.
I love Kate! I found you because of her! I love the idea of using the embroideries from thrift stores. Thank you for sharing, I won’t pass them up now!
Great!
Looking forward to your progress of this beautiful project!!
Hand made linens are treasures handed down, and this is a wonderful way to keep enjoying them. Smaller rectangle shaped ones can be used for decorative bed cushions.
Maybe you could the embroidery piece you like so much as a quilt, curtains and/or pillows for the doll house. I really love the idea you have for the hexagons made from the beautiful embroidery pieces.
