      My Les Paul is one of the best sounding guitars I've ever played. Absolute holy grail tone. No exaggeration. ..but I have the same issue.
      Looks fine, but it just feels weird. (and it's a hefty 10 pounder too) ...which is why mine is almost strictly a studio guitar. Lol
      Live I use my Jazzmaster and SG. I like the longer feeling scale and easy access to the entire neck.

    • @lone-wolf-1
      @lone-wolf-1 6 років тому +5

      Had this feeling too (with my Chibson )... so I decided to get rid of what annoys me: first, the heel corner came off, well rounded for better access to higher frets, second: I carved a belly-cut, so it fits snuggly on my ribcage, third: put 09 strings on it for smoother bendings... voila!! a pleasure to play it, can't put that "black beauty" down

      Mahogany LPs are attractive aesthetically, but as heavy and uncomfortable AF. The neck to body balance (CofG) is awful. Weight notwithstanding, it's OK standing, but sitting, the bumps and curves are in the wrong places for me so they won't sit comfortably. I had an SG many moons ago, but don't recall it being uncomfortable like LPs are. Alder Strats and Ash or Alder Tele shapes work for me.

      Nah, LPs are usually preferred for the looks. They do sound big but that's not always useful in a mix, many are really heavy and what could be off-putting when playing one is their lazy attack due to their build.

    Absolutely killer playing, style, and tone. Both guitars sound epic... prefer the Les Paul tone in your video but in person both sound epic... which is why I also have both. I play my SG more oddly... even though I always preferred a Les Paul and didn't like SG's much until I bought a Gibson SG 61 reissue on a whim because it was one of the only guitars I didn't have in my collection... and now I can't stop playing it...

  • @QuicksilverSG
    @QuicksilverSG 3 роки тому +8

    Chords sound thicker on the LP, even with minimal distortion on the bridge pickup. Chords on the SG have a more crystalline sound, even with moderate distortion on the neck pickup. Switch to the neck pickup on an LP and you have the fattest sound of any electric, be it Gibson, Fender, or anything between. But a wide open SG bridge pickup with maximum overdrive will absolutely sear through your soul.

    • @andreil1234
      @andreil1234 2 роки тому

      I like a nice LP however I much prefer the signature SG growl and better cut through the mix. It's hard not to be heard when using one and hard to put one down when playing it. I was never sold on the looks of the SG, but its tone, playability and featherweight make it pure dope.

    Nice video. One thing a lot of people fail to mention is the neck’s position relative to the body, and to other guitars. On the SG, it is further extended from the body than most others guitars. Playing by feel and as a “native” Strat player, going for an A chord results in a badly fingered B flat chord. I have to extend my left arm just a bit farther, making playing it feel weird and uncomfortable.
    I love the sound of an SG, but for me the feel is all wrong. I don’t have the same problem going from a Strat to a Les Paul.

    The only thing stopping me from owning an SG is the existence of the Les Paul. I would always be wanting the bigger brother. Yeah I know its heavier and upper fret access isn't as good but since when has that stopped anyone? For me, the LP looks better, sounds better, and, in the way the controls/jack is positioned, designed better too.
    Perhaps the only other reason to get the SG is cost. The SG is a USA built Standard Gibson model for not stupid money.

    I've owned a Les Paul but I've never owned an SG. Ive played gigs with both though. (Borrowed someone's SG) There are things about both that I love but things I don't particularly like about both as well. Both can be made to sound great. I think (at least in the case of the one's I've played, the Les Paul has more usable tone options and I was very used to it's bulkiness and neck radius when I had one but for sheer playability, the SG was much better. For speed and fluidity and ease of fretting, SG all the way. For some reason, I'm guessing the neck shape is why, the Les Paul was so much easier to anchor my hand on and control bending and vibrato. A guitar somewhere in between the two would be perfect and I found that in my CE 24.

    • @fedup3449
      @fedup3449 3 роки тому +1

      I just read what you said with interest so i went and looked at the CE24. No doubt a fab gtr with high spec and build quality. My problem is that it doesn't sound like anything iconic from the late 60's to 80's. I have an SG for what it sounds like. Also i have an LP and a Strat for the same reasons. When i hear a PRS i don't hear a guitars' defining sound - i just hear a guitar. I totally respect why you found that PRS as a balance between the SG an LP in terms of feel etc but i don't hear any defining sound. What do you think?

    • @seanfitzpatrick7878
      @seanfitzpatrick7878 3 роки тому

      @@fedup3449 it's true that running it straight into an amp with a clean dry signal produces a kind of generic tone. However, with the right effects and my old Crate tube amp, I get very usable, distinguishable tones both when mimicking Les Paul's and Fenders (Teles/Strats) and for my own tone ( that took me a good 6 months to develop) that's similar to what I consider to be the best features of all three of them, rolled up into one setup. With the neck pickup coil tapped and my modified Ibanez TS9 I get beautiful clean to crunchy blues tones by using my volume knob. With either pickup in humbucker mode and a Marshall mini stack (which is solid state) I get anything from Angus Young to Killswitch Engage and everything in between. I sometimes sub for or sit in with a cover band that has a very eclectic set list and they're regularly impressed with the range of tones I'm able to produce with my rig. Lugging and setting up 2 amps for a gig can be a bit of a pain in the ass but it's worth it for the versatility I'm able to have.

    In 1968 I wanted to trade my Gretsch Nashville for a Gibson Les Paul. I went to Sam Ash in Hempstead and spoke to a salesman. He said that he could get me an old LP if I really wanted one, but suggested that I try an SG as it was so much lighter and had the same hardware, neck, and pickups as a LP. I did, liked it a lot, and bought it, brand new. I used that guitar for the entirety of my early professional music career and reluctantly sold it ten years later when the neck was just about to fall off. I should've had a re-set done. I own both. I love both. They are as far different from each other that they are almost completely different instruments. The SG is a feather and sounds crisp. The LP is a cinder block and sounds thick and heavy. The only draw back to the SG IMO is neck dive but with a little time behind it that is easily overcome.

    • @andreil1234
      @andreil1234 2 роки тому

      It's funny in that so far all the Gibson SG's I've tried had no neck dive whatsoever. What most had in common was the thicker neck and longer joint + vintage lightweight tuners. Weight anywhere from 2.7 to 3.5 kg. Only the SG copies from Epiphone or other brands did misbehave a bit with the neck diving.
      Also, the worst case of neck dive I've seen was ... an Ibanez RGA. Go figure.

    I have one of each and I think it's just a mood thing as to which one to pick up. Also when my shoulder starts to pain me I'll switch to the SG 😉

    SG are great guitars I know..I had one but never used it on stage..... But the problem is when you look at the rock world.. Not many artists are using them. I wonder Why???. But what I like about the SG is the neck finishes at the start of the body which allows you to play with comfort up the fret 22.

      As someone who builds them; I'd say its either because your musical field is narrow (and whats hip tends to flip) or you are looking back over the recent dark ages for the company (2010+ to now) where the internet has done much to suggest that our quality doesn't match the price tag.
      For the first point; Brett has given you some examples. Sam has ordered several recently in fact. For the latter - quality is coming back and will be reflected in sales and those willing to rep them professionally. There are many good alternatives today. The Asian market for example has been a strong recent adopter of PRS in recent years especially; and with the number of third party offerings for SG and LP - lets just say we are aware the market demands quality now more than ever. Look forward to seeing more of them out there.

    I like seeing other people play the les paul but I personally prefer the SG. The only thing i hate about the SG is the neck dive. It’s like it’s trying to kamikaze itself which is annoying. So that’s why i play a telecaster lol

    Both sound great, and beautiful playing. I think the weight behind the LP gives it a "complete" tone. the SG can get some of the "spank" which has had me playing Teles for decades. I prefer the SG with a slight margin, and the price difference makes it a definite choice for SG. Liked and Subbed!

    I love my Les Paul's and SG'S...I use my 1970 Les Paul 3 pick-up custom for all of my heavy tunes,my 1968 Les Paul standard for classic rock tunes,then my 2011 SG 61 reissue is my main,the go to guitar..Then my 2018 SG with 3 p 90's you can really get a Fender tone as well,pretty cool !! I have everything I need for my home studio 😊✌🎶🎸

    Lovely melodic hypnotic ecstatic fantastic bombastic clean playing. Liked the sound of the SG more. Any issues with the neck dive thingy all reviews talk about? Or was it not so obvious with SG Standard model as the neck heel is a bit different on the standard than on the other models!? BTW you deserved a big fat subscribe man. Keep on rocking man 👍

      That can be a problem if you are playing standing up, but TBH it's massively overstated most of the time (individual guitars may vary) and it's not that hard to fix by moving the strap peg to the horn, or just using a wide leather strap.

    SG. LP is too heavy in the body for my aging frame (SG is head-heavy but you can adjust and adapt for that). I have a hot-rodded Epiphone Pro with Gotoh P-90 'Buckers (coil splittable), Gotoh machine heads (tuning pegs) and a better nut & bridge (can't recall where we got those from, I had a friend install all this).
    With my MIM DP Strat and upgraded Affinity Tele (your first guitar, I believe?) I am pretty happy with the tones I can achieve with those 3.
    In my youth, I was always a 335 type. Maton, Epiphone. But my first guitar was actually a MIJ Vox SG copy. That thing was built to last. Alas, it was stolen back in '92. I miss that black hunk of Rawk.

    The Les Paul to me actually has a little bit of a twang. Sounds great with blues, which is what I personally believe Les Pauls were made to play. Great vid!
