"2 Most Important Things to People in their 20s" Philip Wang's 2016 UCSD Speech
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- This was my speech to the graduating class of 2016. I just wanted to be real with them, thinking a lot about what I would’ve wanted to hear 10 years prior when I was sitting in their position. I’m so grateful for the honor and the opportunity to speak on this special occasion.

Not everyone watches WongFu...
"The 20s is when you start to humanize your parents."
Getting choked up with him as he talks about his parents. This is so true..
even a few years removed from undergrad and Phil's insight definitely resonates. thank you
I graduated recently from Humboldt State University and I just have to say this was inspirational Phil, thankyou
Man, that part about parent's. Phil got me with that.
Good stuff Phillip. Very pragmatic words.
This was amazing! Congrats Phil!!!
I wish I could have seen this video my first year of college. I'm now in my third and this speech gave me some positive perspective and, I needed it.
Thank you for being awesome Phil!
Phil I'm so proud of you and Ted and Wes. I've been following you guys for so long (well I guess from yellow fever) and I've seen you all grow. pioneer the way for Asians in media. thank you.
So proud of you Phil! You deserve everything good that comes your way!
Felt a range of emotions and I still have a year left before I leave UCSD. Thank you :')
I have never heard SO perfectly crafted a speech.. ;_; THANK YOU and God bless you
Thank you Phil. I needed to hear some of these words. Great speech. 👏🏻
This was so perfect! Thank you, this helped open my eyes because I'm slowly anticipating my college grad next year!
👏👏👏
Thank you for sharing us! I found tresure words from phil's speech:)
I made a memo!I will share with my friends😊❤️✨love you guys!
Beautiful speech Phil! I love you guys, this was really amazing and touching.
Yes, we often forget that our parents were just like us.
"feelings are what gives our lives texture, even sad feelings, so embrace the entire spectrum of emotions"
INSIDE OUT. PHIL=SADNESS. CONFIRMED.
that speech was beautiful ! 😊
Very inspirational speech especially the relationship part, thank u PHIL (:
I wish I could have someone to share their experience when I was stepping to the university. And thank you for sharing
I love how when he says something with Philip Wang in it people scream
Love this!
Phil is now one of my role models
great speech, honest opinions
Real talk
pretty wise--impressed
PHILIP
Which speech was the bigger deal? This speech by Phil or the speech by Wes for the Sixth College (whatever that is)?
Phil's speech is a lot like his shorts: very relatable, very real, with a sprinkle of humor and a lot of heart.
Love this comment :)
I thought you meant like pants shorts then realised you meant videos
+Z 😂😂😂😂😂😂
He is probably the most rational person in the Internet.
Lol, now that you mentioned it, an image of Phil in colourful summer shorts popped in my head.
"take your time, but don'y waste your time" Great quote.
don'y
don'y 2012
lol don'y we all agree
I think it means that it's ok to take your time, but do SOMETHING.... eventually.
Nini Nguyen indeed 🙌🏼
aweee the parents part ...='(
Hi Linda!
right?!
hit me right in the feels
thanks for watching Linda!
TROLL!
Thank you all for the kind words and positive feedback. I'm so glad to hear that the simple things I had to share can have an impact. No matter what age you are out there, learn how to be passionate in whatever you do, and learn how to be the best you can be when it comes to relationships!
Thank you for everything you've done; your videos have given me something to look forward in my dull life. You're my ultimate epitome, and I can't thank you enough for that.
I almost cried when you started talking about parents, but then you made a joke and the tension in my chest relaxed. Good Job! :) "Take your time but don't waste your time. There's a difference." There's your awesome quote bomb right there! Good Job Phil!
So glad you touched on "Love your family." Especially for asians, that's super important, not only honouring your family and proving yourself to them in a performance-driven culture, but also to humanize them and to understand and love them. Great stuff.
I've been sharing this video with lots of my friends and even with my mom too, really real but also really inspirational
You're an amazing public speaker, Phil! I was captivated throughout the whole 13 minutes. It was humorous, touching, realistic, and inspirational, all at the same time. :) You have a beautiful mind and soul. I'm not surprised that your speech was amazing, for that beauty is reflected through your videos and movies. :)
I make terrible speeches, good thing I wasn't there, what I would say would be; "People are like potatoes, when you eat them, they die"
rofl watching master chef right now and they opened up the mystery box, guess what? they are cooking fucking potatoes...
LMAO
fuck your potatoes. I'll stab em all with my fork and rip them apart with my teeth
Fuck yourself please because I dont want to hear your shit unless you get a degree in life. Or even cook.
You're everywhere dude.. lol
the reason people go to UCSD is Wongfu lol
omgggg nancyyy

"The economy is great" -Philip Wang (2016)
Ayyyy
Ayyyy
But then there's DONALD TRUMP
Ayyyyy
What if this ends up on a buzzfeed video 😂
well then, my life's work is truly complete. -_- haha
I honestly really like watching your videos.
I'm a young viewer (11 years old about to be 12 in July) And I hope you know that. You deserve ALL this.Good job!
+Wong Fu Productions I love your videos
Ah yes, Buzzfeed, the hypocritical clickbait centre of the internet.
+Random Comment true
I cried when he mentioned he parents- dear god why
me too! watching him tear up too :'(
My dad left me at the age of 3 SOOO....
what happened to his parents?
+Derek Lee Nothing happened to his parents. It was just a very emotional and relatable part of his speech, and he got choked up.
I graduated recently but didn't get a cool speaker like Phil. Soooo I'm gonna pretend I'm reliving my commencement ceremony but with Phil. :D
Also with chips and a hopefully good sandwich.
Update: this sandwich and Phil's speech was really good
+Scrofar i love you. internaly and externaly
"take your time but don't waste your time"
needed to hear this. thank you.
Never clicked a video so quickly before! :D
Same
Yep.
Same
I saw this great speech live but it's somehow even better here! How is that possible? Usually recordings are never as good! It's almost as if Phil planned it...AAAAAAHHH 😏
ayyyy
Wes and Phil did a speech..
Ted?
+Orca Omg yes, just yes.
Please be for my class (c/o 2019 [hopefully]) *prays*
(late by a year) but i mean props to Ted for being the only one out of the three to be married lol
Pomp and Circumstance triggers me because I'm in the orchestra at my high school and I have to play it for 15 minutes straight every year at graduation.
SAME! My school's graduation is tomorrow.
I had to play processional at least 10-12, my senior class was huge coming onto the field
It's for the love of the band. We all go through it.
Couldn't agree with you more! It's especially annoying for me since our school has 600 graduates every year, and as a tuba player, we only play quarter notes.
Haha me too, except I'm in band. I played it a lot of times a few weeks ago at my school's graduation.
WWOOP WOOP GO PHILL!!! That was a beautiPHIL and wonderPHIL commencement address;D
I was sitting in the audience as a graduate that day Phil came to speak at UCSD. Never has a speech been more memorable, relatable, and touching than Phil's, especially that part where he almost teared up when he mentioned his family (I almost teared up with him) ❤️ Congrats UCSD class of 2016!
Congrats on graduating fellow triton!
Thank you!
When he was done
Them:claps
Me:claps in my room by myself
You've come a long way since your Justin Timberlake Seniorita video I watched more than a decade ago.
it would have been cool to receive a speech like this when i graduated. he's said so many things i needed to hear at the time: such as expecting to try different jobs.. don't expect to follow a single path... being kind of lost, scared about the future is normal. it's great to hear that stuff. everyone made it seem back then we'd all be doing great & glamorous things after graduation. i had an image of what i expected to happen and what i would be doing. when those things didn't happen i became so depressed & felt so worthless. it still hasn't been that long since my graduation and i'm still not where i want to be.. but i know i'm not the only one and that's comforting. it makes me feel like i'm not the weird alien. it's normal. i'll get there someday. i'll be ok. we'll be ok.
That parents part man... Almost made me tear up yooo
The speech was so Phil. SO. PHIL. and I loved it.
He needs to give a Ted Talk 👌
I loved this speech.
Taylor's laugh at 11:06 got me good, LOL!
Now it's Ted's turn to do a commencement speech!
obtained alot of wisdom and PHIL-osophy from this video
lol that sounds like Taylor laughing behind the camera. This was an awesome speech I'm not even graduating and I'm inspired!
This video couldn't have come at a better time for me. Especially as I'm trying to pursue film.
it's a harsh industry. but good luck! i want to be a pro youtuber just like Wong Fu but my eyes are too poor for it. and my parents are against it
Ryan Patterson i
Woooooooooh Phil!!!! 🤗🤗🙃🙌🏼🙌🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼🎓🎬📝🎥🖥
One of the best speeches I've ever heard, period.
You probably haven't heard a lot of speeches then.
+Johnny S 😁
+Johnny S What made it so great was how sincere Phil was, and how he shared what he thought would help people find themselves in the years to come. I think it was a great speech, mainly because of his sincerity.
Johnny S Touché, but I've heard much more grandiose speeches from those with higher education or those considered with "higher intellect," but they didn't resonate as much.
Well said. Thank you for your honesty in vulnerability
Him:2nd thing, ...
Me: relationships
Him: relationships
I'm about to graduate from high school this year. Medical entrances in are 3 months away in India. I sacrificed everything for it for the last 2 years. My sleep, my social life, family, reading, I became fat, I have back, neck and shoulder issues now and I even lost a third of my hair volume in the process. And then out of nowhere I realize I don't want to do this anymore. And because I'm a good student I have so much more expectations from myself than others do. I'm still preparing for the entrances but I don't know what the fuck am I doing... And I don't know what the fuck I want to do.
If you don't believe anymore in what you're doing, what's the point? Don't let the circumstances dictate your life, else you'll be miserable for a really long time. Take a break. Try to figure out what what things still move your heart, that could be a start.
How did you go?
That's so cool. I hope one day I can be a commencement speaker for my Alma mater too ^^
" Take your time, but don't waste your time " words to live by. Thanks Phil
I am in my mid-twenties. Everything that Phil said is SPOT ON, from jobs to relationships. Early twenties you feel you can take on the world, but by mid you're lost an confused. The struggle is real, but it won't last forever. As long as you believe in yourself and surround yourself with supportive people, you will be fine.
This is a really good speech! It doesn't just tell people like "chase this and chase that, follow your dreams to the fullest"... it really hit me about the parents and family part... I've been having some issues with them and I haven't really told them that I appreciate them at all this past month. All I wanted to do was for them to leave me alone so I could do my own thing, because they always end up getting in my way when I try to get what I want done. I've flipped out at them multiple times and all they do is apologize and leave... never do they ever lash back at me. I'm such a spoiled brat. I've been looking at it the wrong way. I'm gonna go talk to them tonight.
Thanks Phil :)
First, Wes. Now, you?! I LOVE IT
Maybe in a few years Ted will get invited...and then all of Wong Fu, at the same time!
so many powerful quotes! love how original, real and touching it was :)
bless up, been with this channel for awhile now. glad to see this happen for Philip
"take your time, but don't waste it" loved this line phil- i seriously think ill keep this thought with me for a long long time ahaha
I'm still in high school but this really opened up a whole new perspective
Wow phil. Every step of that speech was extremely relatable. And thank you for mentioning parents.
that was such a perfect speech, i've got so much respect for phil! if everyone in the world would be this wise, kind, warm-hearted, honest, filial, tolerant and thoughtful as him, the world would be a better place *_*
"Emotions are what gives your life meaning". I've started to think this too. What we're really here for is experiencing the world, the good AND the bad. Live life to its fullest, have a good time, help other people, love other people.
I really liked this speech c:
Lovely speech, Phil. As an almost-2 yr. post-graduate, I still have a lot to learn from life. It's hard, but I'm getting there...or so I'd like to think. Thanks for the inspiration. :)
Truly awesome and talented orator. You have a knack for public speaking....and on the contrary you dropped a lot of meaningful and thought provoking "quote bombs".
"I didn't chase my passion but I became passionate about what I chased." - Philip Wang
Such a great speech! So many quotable parts! I love the part where Phil says that nobody knows what they are doing, and that woman with the white hair to the left (my view) is nodding and grinning. :D
Thanks Phil for the amazing speech. Things you said are exactly what I'm experiencing for the past 2 years. Hopefully will be sorted out soon. Nevertheless, best of luck to you!
Cheers, from Malaysia 😊
Good luck!
"take your time but don't waste your time." so deep yet so true.
Love the fact that you made it so comfortable for everyone!
"Surround yourself with positive people. People that will push and support you as you discover your sense of passion." love that. Amazing speech Phill! Wish you are going to do a speech at my graduation!
Phil the romantic would absolutely talk about love in his commencement address. I should've expected no less.
Phil, I love your speech. Especially the part about the parents. Thanks for reminding me about it.
So beautiphil ❤️👌🏿
Phil when he is walking at the start looks like he is about to vomit
Damn Phil i stated crying when u did :(
Years later i can confirm. In my 20s. My biggest regret was def not bonding with my parents more. They are really just in the same boat as me.
The parents part, its so true..before we're twenties, some of us hated our parents n saying they dont understand us..then through our 20-30s, we realise they meant good, its just we fail to understand them instead of them understanding us..they see life ahead of us but we were arrogant n think that we know better than them, being the egoistic person that we are..
I know this for a fact because i went to 4 different colleges at age 18-24, i never graduated from any of them (i dropped out), only when i reached 25, i realise i was so stupid to not listen to my parents..dont make decisions when ur full of hatred n anger, its just not worth it
Make no mis-steak, this was well-done. Had my eyes Phil'ed with tears. Thanks to Wes, that went off tassle-free.
That was a really good speech! Was actually useful rather than preachy!
As someone who invites commencement speakers locally, let me tell you: that was wonderful. You shared much truth.
Amazing speech, well said 💙
Wow...I'm a rising senior in college and I've been having a mini-crisis lately about what's important to me/makes me happy/what I want to do with my life. This was exactly what I needed to hear today, so thanks Phil. :) Also, I was grinning the whole time during his speech--he did such a great job and I feel so so proud of him and proud to be a Wong Fu fan!
What an honor man. That's a dream of mine to give a commencement speech at my Alma Mater.
That was actually a much better and more heart-felt speech than many people have given. You're absolutely right on all accounts. This age you start to see real life, self-doubt, it's hard to find your own direction in a world where you're bombarded by how well put together other people are.
I lost members of my family a couple of years ago, and it made me regret every day I didn't spend with them when I had the chance. Building up yourself and your career is important, but nothing is more important than the ones you love. They're the ones that will keep you going if everything else falls apart.
This is going to sound bizarre and off but your speech was very human. You were really speaking to us and not chanting some cliche graduation speech. I graduated in 2014 but never went to commencement. Thank you. You were funny and genuine
Thought this was a comedy video then realized its the real deal
Don't follow your passions follow your efforts.
I WAS THERE!! I was there for my brothers graduation and when my bro told me you were the commencement speaker, i made it a mission to find you lol. Unfortunately i wasnt able to get a picture with you and shake your hands because i was busy taking pictures of my siblings with you, but just the fact that i saw you in person was awesome! *totally fan girl-ing* Hope to see you and the rest of the crew one day in the bay area!
gosh. I felt like I graduated.😄
