Here's Greenwich, The Wealthiest Neighborhood In Connecticut

  • Wow - this is one of the richest neighborhoods in the nation!
For this edition of dashboard tours, the plan was the opposite from the trip I had just taken into the bowels of the worst hood in the state of Connecticut. On this afternoon, I’d take a tour of the richest and most exclusive section of town in the state of Connecticut. So I exited off of I-95 south and headed for Greenwich, which is not only the wealthiest community in the state, but one of the richest towns in the nation.
For this route, I chose an area that had the biggest and most expensive homes. I settled on an area here, kind of in a windy road part of Greenwich and just sort of explored the area to see what it looked like. For those of you who are wondering how much these homes go for, the average home we’ll see goes for well over $2 million bucks. However, some are priced at $900,000, and many are well over $4 million.
What do these people do that they can afford such luxurious homes? The average household income here is about $250,000, but many people here make waaaay more than that. Many work in New York City, which is about an hour drive away. They are hedge fund managers, entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, and work in the banking and entertainment industry. To be middle class here in Greenwich, you make about $180,000 and $400,000.
Here’s a look at Greenwich, the wealthiest place in Connecticut, and one of the ten wealthiest places in the country.

I lived a few towns over for the past six years as a person on the “opposite” end of the wealth spectrum. The multi-million dollar houses are all hidden behind super high fences and trees with a lot of acreage between the home and the road. Same with New Canaan, Westport and Darien. My husband’s career let’s him see past the high gates and interact with the one-percenters from time to time... the amount of wealth they have is astonishing. Some of them are really kind, others are jerks - “my maid will buzz you in, don’t get mud on my Belgian block driveway”. I once passed a tiny cottage for sale and looked it up out of curiosity, $1.2 million for less than 1000 sq ft with no property. It’s insane. Many areas of lower Fairfield County are beautiful, but just like California’s Santa Barbara and other similar demographics, it’s unfathomable to the regular person.

Used to bike ride through northern Greenwich on my loop up from White Plains, NY when I lived in WP ... kept trying to recognize some of the streets you were on, Nick/some of it looked a littttle familiar ... I remember one time going by a for sale house on a beautiful hilly winding lane. It had been on the market for a long time & there would be open houses on weekends, week after week, with no people going to take a look, no cars in the (circular) driveway. A lonely realtor woman once waved from the front patio as I rode by & I waved back and I thought various things: she and I were closer in income bracket than anyone who could actually afford to live there ... and she was the only person who ever waved (or smiled) in all the times I rode through Greenwich.

Lived in Greenwich during the 1990s, commuted into NYC for work, came back, drove to the residents beach, ate a burger went home. Greenwich is where I learned to drive, learned to horseback ride, ate local fish my neighbors caught, I lived on Steamboat Road, good base for weekend trips to Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Some of the exclusive communities are private roads but not always gated. They had a nice public library compared to the ones in NYC. But not much of a night life. Fond memories.

My best friend's stepdad's brother lives in Greenwich on a gated street, he's a dentist for people with money-money, and I went to New York back in 2012 and stayed in their house. It was three floors, had an elevator, and everything inside was done with crazy detail. I was told that neighbors at one point complained to them, because the molding at the bottom of the walls INSIDE THEIR house was wrong somehow and they had it changed. I don't know why but it seemed to matter to the neighbors, and my friends step uncle lol. But we were close enough to walk outside and go right down that main street with the Starbucks, Apple store and like a Ferrari dealership at the bottom of the hill. It was also walking distance to a train that took you into the city. The whole experience was unlike anything else. Their lives were so different my low income midwest one lol. They were super cool people who showed us a ton of stuff while we were there both times we went.

I like that the sounds of the birds that traveled with you....But there is something I must say about the homeless.... People seem to think they are all the same....I too was once homeless for a long time and as I saw the horror of the city streets and the horrible shelters I decided to get away and find a secluded place in smaller towns and worked day labor....I had to camp in the woods and save my money.... Sometimes the cops saw me and noticed I kept a clean camping place and some times they helped me.... Thank God for good cops.... Maybe I'm not the norm....One time when I was hitchhiking someone let me out in a place like this but not there....As I was walking down the road with my backpack on my back the cops showed up and said even though this is a shortcut to the highway you can't even walk on the side walk here....I felt hopelessly sad....But he did give me a ride to the highway.

Originally from Larchmont we moved to Rye in 1972. Years later I was briefly homeless because of addiction and ended up living in the shelter in White Plains New York. I was fortunate it it got bad enough for me to want to change as I have now been at Chelsea Manhattan residence since 2004. With my father just passing 3 years ago at the age of 90 my parents were married 63 years mom is not well there's one of the top three facilities in the area to care for and all I can think about is I can no longer go home.
