Good job Exoman, im a retire Hotel Maintenance Manager, its important to educate people how PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE saves you more $ than paying those maintenance/ replacement costs....
Water heaters often have a sacrificial anode that is in place to prevent them from rusting out over time. Instead of the tank rusting, the anode which is more reactive will rust instead. These should be replaced periodically to extend the life of the tank. That said, I don't think I've ever heard of a single person that has done this.

If you drain all the water and its trying to run it will burn up without water there to be heated.

I'd guess hundreds prob thousands thrown out and replaced. When it could've been done with $60-70 part. 😅

I'd rather replace my water heater every 10 years than clean it. They only cost $300 ..come on man.

Haven't been shopping for a new one lately have you? $300 might get you a 10 gallon one for your kitchen, if you're lucky.
