Everyone talks about "Sixteen Candles" or "St Elmo's Fire" or "The Breakfast Club" for 1980s movies. This is the best comedy of that decade on lots of levels.

I remember when I saw this in the theater as a young teenager -- the confluence of punk rock and technology in that intro: mind blown. Such a good movie.
Here's what I know about the Iggy Pop theme--- Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols is on guitar Nigel Harrison of Blondie is on bass and Clem Burke of Blondie is on the drums. Sounds like a great band to me!
Thought the Pistols Paul Cook was on drums. He and Jones were the Professionals. Iggys best post Stooges song imo. Saw Zander Schloss when he was playing with the Weirdos and as he walked by I uttered "I wasn't singing, guy!" He turned with a big smile. He wasn't really acting...pretty sure he was just being himself. Greatest movie/soundtrack
If you want to hear more thats not on the soundtrack look up "Flor De Mal" by Cruzados. Its credited as the Plugz in the movie. Was also redone for Once Upon A Time In Mexico.
Just think- the reason we got this instrumental masterpiece is because Iggy Pop got so wasted the night before- he didn't show up for the recording session... Well-later dudes- I gotta go look for the joke with a microscope!
W0ah, in all these years, I never heard that story.. is it from an Alex Cox lecture/film? I saw Iggy & the Stooges down here in Nola, back in 1984.. Was the only time I ever caught them live & they delivered.. Crowd was jacked up, like a good version of the Blues Brothers Rawhide scene,, cups & bottles flying around, various levels of mayhem. Everyone seemed to be thinking "we'll never see Iggy & these guys again." New Orleans was still the home of jazz & funk, so it felt like a bit of time travel whenever a good punk or new wave gig came to town. Was about a year later when New Order played a show here. Raves didn't exist yet but people were already dropping x then staying up all night for dance /techno, new wave & industrial bands... a sort of post punk scene, every genre were mixed. A dose of Iggy was like a jump back in time to early heydays of punk that fit into the scene even tho punk & new wave were fading out fast back in England. Nola has always been on its own sort of disjointed time machine, which is a good thing.
This is what the 1980s thought GPS technology would look like. Like _Escape From New York_ , it was animated because the computer technology - and the ability to simulate it on a computer - didn't exist.
I spent an entire summer blasting dirt roads in a 99' Crown Vic police car. Like i was addicted to it. Id go out every day and explore further and further outside of my town. This whole sequence/music will forever remind me of it lol just badass.
triple watch in the theatre, many times on VHS. Always liked the opening credits. Anybody with the tech behind getting the graphics to look like this? green and black.
When they had those pop-up drive-in screenings at the actual locations they were filmed (for instance, showing the original PLANET OF THE APES at Lake Powell) , I went to see this film next to the LA River downtown. You turned on your radio for the sound. I'll never forget standing in line for a beer & seeing Alex Cox next to me. Got to thank him for making such a masterpiece!
There should be Oscars for Main Titles SURELY?? The Good The Bad and The Ugly, The Taking of Pelhan 123 ( 1974), Mars Attacks, Repo Man, Goodfellas, Dirty Harry, Bullitt, and so on
I haven't seen the other two and i can't remember Casino ( though i prefer the film to the brilliant Goodfellas). I think main titles are an art form in themselves like album sleeves.Bushrod Rust Johnson
before i get my anorak, apparently the story behind the instrumental version is that mr pop was given 2 days to write & record the main theme song. the band consisted of steve cook from the sex pistols & clem burke & nigel harrison from blondie. as per usual, mr pop hadn't yet bothered to compose any lyrics, plus he was all coked up, so the band layed down some instrumental versions on the first day (which you have here) until mr pop could get his act together the next day and record the vocals.
I'm sure this is Iggy Pop. It sounds exactly like the closing theme except without the vocal. Also, it credits Iggy Pop in this opening theme. I would have thought they would have credited the Plugz if it were them.
"I was a teenage dinisoar- Stones & obsolete- I didn't get fucked & I didn't get kissed- I GOT SO FUCKING PISSED! Using my head for an ashtray- Now I'll tell you who I am... I'm your Repo Man!"
I heard that the instumental version was done by The Plugz to fit the opening graphics. It was never put on the soundtrack. I don't think it's available anywhere unless you rip it off the DVD.
Not sure why you'd say that -- I think Alex just made some films that flopped, and fell from the list. Hollywood can be cruel, especially in the indie world where every dollar counts...
A Bit Over a B Movie But GREAT as a Cult Film Still To This Day. mainstream Educateds(- Oxymoron/?) Cant See/Understand The Greatness!!! Love it!!! Hmmm But Where is That Chevelle Now? Did It Ever Touch-Down after That Scenic cruze it went On? ....

Hell yeah
Agreed, but I did enjoy Breakfast Club
They're all classics in their own right.
Eating Raoul is also a really underappreciated 80s comedy
This is Spinal Tap gets my vote.
Anyone else watched this about a thousand times?

It's one of the greats
Yep and I've just ordered a dvd of it from ebay to add to my collection.
DId you do a lot of acid back in the hippie days?

Classic legendary movie that nobody ever heard of. Along with They Live

very catchy for a punk song intro. I was hooked immediately. SEt the tone for the rest of the film.
Road Warrior was pretty amazing.

Me too, saw it in a rep theatre in 1984. My mind was blown.
The single greatest movie intro jam in history

one of the greatest movies I've ever seen
Apparently it's one of Steve Soderbergh's favorites as well, so that says a lot
Here's what I know about the Iggy Pop theme---

*Fun Fact:* This is the greatest movie of all time.
Steve Jones lifting the 60's TV Batman theme like it was a Ronnie Wood guitar or a Roxy Music backline. Love it!
OOOh, love your muse
I just learned that the Monkees guitarist was an executive producer on this film.
He got it made
This is an awesome credit sequence.
This and "Danger Zone " opener from top gun are best examples of using hard rock and vivid images to blast open a movie

I saw this film at The Minor theater in Arcata in early spring, 1985. Someone in the theater was smoking clove cigarettes.
About time this soundtrack was remastered and this version included.
