  • Lesser Celandine (Ficaria verna) is undoubtedly a beautiful spring flower. Unfortunately, it is also a very aggressive, non-native species that is quickly engulfing our natural areas and choking out our diverse native populations of spring wildflowers. This video focuses on how to recognize it, why not to allow it in our yards, and how to get rid of it. We discuss our preferred method of treatment, which involves the careful use of herbicides timed to do the least amount of damage to our environment, and discuss some non-herbicide solutions. This is a plant that everybody needs to learn to recognize as we work together to limit its spread before it's too late.
    Oak Haven is a 60-acre private woodland in Southwestern Ohio near Cincinnati. Jim and Julie Varick both have degrees in Botany and over thirty years of experience in managing natural areas. They enjoy sharing their enthusiasm for the natural world and would like to build relationships with like-minded people to share knowledge and resources.

    Thank you for your great videos. I bought a home two years ago and apparently there was a lawn care person that lived in my home that dumped all his clippings in the woods so this buttercup is taking over my woods and my yard. Going to try the glyphosate since I have tried everything else!

    I believe glyphosate to be worse for humans than what was mentioned. But I do agree it's the best way to control this invasion and I have used it successfully to fight lesser celandine.

      Thank you, please keep these videos up. Thanks to your timely video I could find this and start to eradicate it. I do feel terror now when I see any new patches! I wanted to caution oeoe going to community mulch piles, that is where I got some. Also some spring garden clubs welcome donated plants. Not all their volunteers are aware of what is invasive. If I see any I always tell them to destroy it but I hope that everyone is wary of purchasing unknown plants that become a nightmare.

    Thanks for getting back to me - I have already completely stripped (or so I thought) the top soil AND taken out all of my perennials 2 times over the last 4 years, (which took me a solid month each time) - ONLY to find that I missed some of the Lesser Celandine and it starts spreading again and again... I HATE that stuff SO much... it is now also spreading across my lawn. I will just have to blast it and hope that some of my perennials that I have been growing for the last 20 years will survive... thanks again.

    My neighbors' yards are full of lesser celandine. Where it encroaches into my yard, I dig it out by hand multiple times per year, looking for every little nutlet and tuber. So far, I have none in my yard, but I've lost countless hours to keeping it out. I'm willing to do it because I so don't want this monster in my yard. Thank you for this excellent video.

They're wise to be able to tell, why such invasion and what can plants be used for. Nature knows what it's doing and small proportion of people (incl some Native Indians) can tell Why and What - how to use this for useful things.

    I noticed the huge infestation at the cincinnati nature center a couple weeks ago, and recognized it because it is all over the woods behind my house in a thick carpet - which also happens to be upstream from Sharon Woods lake area. I have watched this stuff slowly March into my neighbors yard, and now take over my woods. We have tried multiple applications of roundup, as well as vinegar and now laying down tarps. The only thing that appears to have noticeably killed it is the tarps, but that’s not practical for too large of an area. I fear that this stuff is going to be with us for a long time, but I’m interested in seeing the results of your burning test!

    • @TheWoodlandSteward
      @TheWoodlandSteward  3 роки тому

      I'm interested in seeing the results too! All of the methods that we are testing look good right now, but the key will be what took care of the roots and tubers, which we won't know until next year. The burning was really hard to do with live and fleshy plant material. What was your experience with Roundup? Why do you think it didn't work?

    Hi- I belong to a community garden in NYC and we have a lot of this in and around our beds. There are tulips and daffodils and hosta and hydrangea and rose bushes and wysteria, etc with lesser Celandine jammed in and around the roots and beds. We are divided in terms of carefully and slowly manually removing the Celandine or using a chemical to treat it- and then, which chemical. This video really did a great job of explaining the nature of the issue, especially the fact that humans are the ones spreading it around without realizing it. It's a vicious cycle.
    Can you speak to the use of chemicals that will not damage the soil and the surrounding plants. Is there something like that? Will it really work? Our soil is quite good and full of lovely worms. It's so difficult to think about pouring poison on it. I have little to no experience with herbicides. The plot is less than an acre. Would you recommend just being really diligent about manual removal or going ahead with chemical treatment in March when the plant first starts coming up next year?
    Thanks in advance!

    • @TheWoodlandSteward
      @TheWoodlandSteward  3 роки тому +2

      If it were my bed, I would use glyphosate in the early spring to get most , if not all of it under control. Glyphosate has little to no soil activity as far as plants are concerned. The jury is still out about the impact to earthworms. Again, treating in early spring should minimize the contact of worms and glyphosate. It would be interesting to treat half the plot with glyphosate, and half by manually digging out the plants. Report back to us what you choose to do!

    Will glycophate 53.8 kill lesser celandine? I found several brands. Should it have surfactant, or can I use dish soap?

    • @TheWoodlandSteward
      @TheWoodlandSteward  4 місяці тому

      53.8% glyphosate is very concentrated. You can dilute it to between 2-4%. If it doesn't come with a surfactant already mixed in, choose a surfactant for your situation. Lesser celandine often grows in wet areas where you should use an aquatic friendly formulation. I choose not to use dish soap.

    • @TheWoodlandSteward

      The glyphosate solution has no root activity. It only kills plants when it comes in contact with the leaves or stems. The plants must be actively growing for it to work.

    This is a very informative video! Is there a recommended herbicide to control lesser celandine in a lawn grass like zoysia where you don’t want to spray glyphosate and kill the lawn?

    • @TheWoodlandSteward
      @TheWoodlandSteward  3 роки тому +1

      We are experimenting with Alligare Triclopyr 4 (active ingredient Triclopyr), which is a broadleaf killer that is suitable for most lawns (perennial bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, or tall fescue). It says on the label not to apply it to zoysiagrass "unless turf injury can be tolerated". I would look at labels for a broadleaf treatment that was designed for zoysiagrass. Sorry I can't be more help.

    Can you give any advice for an invasion of fig buttercup in my flower beds with many years of perennial plants which I don’t want to kill? I’ve been fighting this for the last 5 years and have stripped all top soil twice trying to dig out this horrible monster - to no avail! Please help!

    • @TheWoodlandSteward
      @TheWoodlandSteward  2 роки тому

      That's a tough situation! If you are okay using herbicides, I would use a 4% glyphosate solution in the early spring before the perennials are actively growing. It wouldn't kill all of the Lesser Celandine, but it might knock it back enough that you could practically spot treat the surviving plants. I considered suggesting that you dig out the perennials, and then treat the Celandine, but I think you might just end up moving the Celandine out with the perennials and then back in when you re-plant. Let me know how it goes.

    50% of my backyard is covered in the stuff, but I have dogs, so I’m apprehensive on using the herbicides. Should I just lay the plastic or probably paper down and mulch the entire backyard with the wood chip 2.50 a bag Home Depot stuff? Or is there a better type of mulch to use that might at least help promote growth once the celandine is gone?? Why do I have the feeling I’m going to end up with a rock garden instead? :(

    • @TheWoodlandSteward
      @TheWoodlandSteward  3 роки тому +1

      I'm afraid I don't know much about managing lawns. It kind of depends on what your ultimate goal is for the area. That much Lesser Celandine seems to suggest that some sort of mass destruction is in your future, whether that is with a selective herbicide that would kill off the broadleaf weeds and leave your grass, or some sort of physical destruction with mulch. We currently have some test plots set up looking into some methods of Lesser Celandine control, including herbicides, plastic mulching, vinegar, weed whipping, burning, and a chelated iron solution. Hopefully we will have a better answer for you once we see what happens with these tests. Please keep us posted about what you find out in your own research and what you decide to do.

  • @patrickdoyle6797

    • @TheWoodlandSteward
      @TheWoodlandSteward  3 роки тому

      We have three test plots with Triclopyr at 12, 6, and 3%. 12 and 6% seem to have killed off at least the upper growth of the Lesser Celandine. 3% left a lot of living plants. Unfortunately, we did not test it in a lawn situation, which is where it could potentially be the most useful, since it is a broad leaf killer.
