Wow. Great test and great results. I saw a similar test by a British landscape photographer, Nigel Danson. Same situation except a rusty brown fox terrier bounding at the camera straight out of brown ferns and heather - almost perfectly camouflaged. The Z9 nailed it. Up to this video, it was the best test I’ve seen. This one matched it. Thanks Steve.
I have been photographing action dogs for years now. I love it! These last frames, where you added check marks or X's, are outstanding. Halfway through this video I transferred over to YT and made sure it was set at 1080 HD. Big difference! Yesterday, NPS emailed me that my Z9 has shipped. It will get my dog lens on it.... the 80-400 AFS and I'll head to the beach for fast dogs. It is fast and accurate, keeping up with the very fastest dogs! This is the second video of yours for me. I saw #1 2 days ago I think. When I see a video of yours posted, I hurry to see it. Keep it up!
An excellent real world test from an experienced nature/wild life photographer. Thanks for sharing. I've got the Z 100-400 lens and now waiting for the Z9 to arrive. Man, that lens hood! I'd get one.
Hi My husband and I have only just discovered you and have sat down religiously and watched every episode!! Absolutely amazing!! Love your work and reviews!! 😍😍😍
Great video Steve and your testing subject is beautiful!! I’m happy you just tested it a random situation! Always enjoy hearing your opinions on cameras and gear. Especially the Z9!!
Thanks for the quick update on the Z9 Steve. It looks like Nikon finally got it right.. As far as that lens hood goes, I use the same one for shooting hockey. I am able to push the lens right against the glass and reduce any light glare. Thanks again for the video and looking forward to some more of you testing the Z9 in real wildlife situations and perhaps how you feel it compares to the Sony A1.
Impressive AF performance! Really hope my camera is in the next shipment to the UK 🤞 For the rubber lens hood, looking for ‘rubber lens hood 77mm’ on eBay here in the UK yields results… Probably unbranded but I guess that’s fine!
This is so encouraged for us Nikon users. Its so important that Nikon gets the AF into a mid market camera soon. I'm sure they know how important this, so I'm hanging on to my D750 and keeping my fingers crossed.
The rubber lens hood is on e bay from many suppliers and lots of sizes I just put in screw on lens hood and they came up this is here in the uk with uk suppliers
Thanks for a great video. Jessops here in the UK have rubber lens hoods very cheap and eBay have some. They're considerably cheaper than Nikon lens hoods and more secure and collapsible, I'll definitely be getting some in the future, thanks for letting us know they exist!
Gorgeous Shepherd (I'm raising a 12 week old male GSD currently 🙂). This is actually a much more useful test vs you being more thoughtful in your shooting / framing. I'm beyond impressed with the Z9's AF performance in vids like this. Planning my order for fall 2022, hopefully Nikon can fulfill all pre-orders by then. Thanks!
I've been shooting GSD in action for 18 years and that is stunning AF results Steve. The one I shoot is usually working K9s with a lot more power/speed, so trust me when I say I know the difficulties. Incoming K9 at full throttle I prefocus to get an AF lock/track, starting with the dog filling approx a quarter of the frame. Z9 seems to acquire focus instantly, far beyond D4s/D500, simply amazing. . Thx for sharing and cool lens hood 👍
Steve, great video. Thanks also for the reminder on the lens hood. I have the100-400 on order, so have just been into my storage area and retrieved a brand new M77 No 2, that I have had for years! Now to put it to use.
Excellent results given all the random facts about the shoot. In photo journalism the randomness and catching the shot is what this camera must do in order for Nikon to remain competitive. Z9 will be my first mirrorless when I move from D850. As they say…soon. Thanks for posting Steve this is helpful in the decision making process,
I believe the lens hood was made originally for mamiya RB 67 and RZ 67 cameras. You can still find them on the used market with 77mm filter threads but I think new stock is non existent. Places like KEH or eBay would be the best bet to find them I think. Anyway nice z9 test! I did the same test with my golden retriever and a Z6ii and 80% of the shots were back focused lol. Looks like the Z9 is a huge improvement. I ordered mine last night now I’m just hoping I can get it in my hands within the next 3 months.
Look at it this way: do you really want a wild wolf closing in on you like that? Pretty good AF performance. You should check out Morten Hilmer's videos of his shoots in the Norwegian Arctic with the Z9. Awesome stuff!
Yes very nice, I received my Z9 couple weeks ago and just love it, Now it's which lens do I buy? I mean I have the 14-30 f4 S, 24-70 2.8 S. 70-200 2.8 S, But this Nikkor 200-500 I have just doesn't have the image quality that it should. I was thinking of the new 100-400 f5.6 S but for BIF it might be to short I also have the 1.4x Z Tele to bring it to 560mm, What do you think? maybe wait for the 800mm or the 200-600? LOL my mind is about to explode;)
Thanks Steve. You going to keep the auto / auto setting or fine tune it to something else? I’m actually a person who reads my new camera manual cover to cover. Took me about 3 minutes with Z 9. Going to have to go somewhere to figure out different modes. Course practice too.. it’s been pouring down rain since I got it. 🤬
I have that same Mamiya collapsible lens hood as well and have had it for years. Excellent and very versatile lens hood. So, I just watched your episode on your chaotic gear in your bag. Now that you have had some time with the Z9, are you going to go back to Nikon exclusively?
Plenty of Mamiya 77mm rubber hoods available on eBay. Also 58mm and some 67mm hoods from their m645 line of lenses. I particularly appreciate the rigid front section on their rubber hoods, have used them on my Canon lenses for 30years now.
Also considering this was in snow... usually older Z cameras would struggle a lot in snowy, white background. Not sure how sony A1 would behave. impressive.
Nice auto-focus performance. I'm one of the many waiting for delivery of my Z9 and 100-400. Looks like Robert's Camera has some NOS Mamiya 77 #2 hoods on eBay. I just picked one up. Thanks for the great tip!
It seems to me that the AF is consistent and fast, but capturing the mouth and not the eyes of the dog. The shar zone is amazing but it's not the eyes.
