"Hockey playing some fine football, with England playing well against England for Wales....." I feel sooooooooooooo sorry for David Coleman having to commentate on a match like this.
The 3-1 humiliation vs the Germans at Wembley and this " shock " result is where England's decline that would last until 1982 -86 began. Despite having a plethora of really talented players to chose from, no one could mould them into a winning team. The slide to mediocrity proved terminal and they failed to qualify for anything until Spain 82. It did not have to be like that. Can you imagine what Clough would have made of all that talent, doesn't bare thinking about really, does it ? Or Bob Paisley for that matter.
The vital point lost in this World Cup qualifier at Wembley was the chief factor why England the 1966 World Cup champions failed to make the cut for the 1974 World Cup finals in Munich. In fact Wales that evening could have registered a shock victory if not for Norman Hunter's last gasp long range shot which saved the home team from embarrassment. The visitors looked very threatening and it was John Toshack who gave Wales the lead Wales were heading for a famous victory until and unlikely source Norman Hunter silenced them. For Kevin Keegan it was the last time he would be capped by manager Sir Alf Ramsey.Keegan would only add to his England caps under Don Revie.
How do you not beat Wales or Poland at home and think you should have qualified and would have done well at world Cup? Please explain that to me And please dont use the term "bad luck", the crutch of losers worldwide
@@poundshopcicero3089 or about fear of creative players. Hoddle was to suffer later. Our missing two world cups in a row suggests the prevailing philosophy left alot to be desired.
@@aaropajari7058 the problem with Marsh was it was always about him and never the team. You cannot afford passengers in international football, more often than not he simply flattered to deceive, as did many of his generation. He just wasn't good enough for that level. Hoddle on the other hand was quality on the pitch. I also agree with your point regarding how they played at this period, dire most of it and negative in the extreme, a result of a timid, must not lose mentality. I did not work and the stats speak for themselves.
@@poundshopcicero3089 As much as I love Rodders, you could be quite right. And I cannot speak too highly of Hoddle. Yours was a very thought provoking comment...refreshing in an age where footballers are discussed through thoughtless memes.
Yma o hyd! Cymru am byth!
Probably the game that knocked England out. Not that famous Poland match.

Excellent upload! Thanks! Just keep the aspect ratio at 4:3 - that's how it was then and should be now.
The beginning of the end for Sir Alf...no wonder the Wembley crowd booed. Awful.
No 10 there Mahoney, who, as we know went on to star in Police Academy.
SIR NORMAN OF HUNTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
toshack and keegan team mates strike force opposite sides.
Wouldn't have mattered - Still needed to beat Poland - I think we would have been there or there about if Qualified - sad really .
England would have gone out in the first round.
@There is a puma in everyone I'd doubt that England were ready to rock 🪨 .

One of Rodney Marsh's only nine caps. Says alot.
About Marsh himself.
