How aggressive is the tinting? I mean, do it can be used for practical purposes like bike sunglass or arc welder's glasses? If not then can it's tinting be adjusted by a series variable resistor?
There are better/cheaper technologies available for self tinting glasses which are already in use.
The lens of thins thing is a polarized lens. As such, it doesn't provide proper UV protection.
This means if you wear these your pupils will dialate and then the glasses will let UV in and that will slowly cook the lens of your eyes and cause cataracts.
So this is not a practical solution, at least for casual sunglasses.
In answer to your question. By adjusting the angel of the top polarizing filter, the amount of light that passes through can be adjusted. Then again, you will have to find an actual use case for this. (In fact similar glasses are used for 3D TVs).
Having said that, his ability for DYI prototyping with very little equipment and tools is quite AMAZING!
His abilities is what is impressive about this video.
