I love jamming this song, and to the version where Jaco plays with Herbie on it, he did some fun little stuff with that line and made that song so much more fun
That envelope filter sounds awesome, never been a advocate of the synthetic sounds the likes of which pedals provides but this filter works very well and is under consideration for a future purchase. Those various fills on this Chameleon are quite the inspiration however it is really what you articulate in words as opposed to what you articulate on bass which i find most beneficial. High class video great lesson
Very practical lesson for developing a line, and love the way you incorporated the role of the envelope filter sound! Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Rufus! Looking forward to more.
Great lesson! I love how you've taught an essential rule in playing funk; sometimes it's what you DON'T play that makes it funky!(Around 5:30-7:00) Bootsy Collins would definitely approve!
Nice! Ever tried containing the main riff within a four fret "box" by keeping index finger barred across the 3rd fret (makes the Bb octave 3rd fret on the G string) and playing both root and flat 7 with your pinkie? Kinda neat and super ergonomic but I never see anyone doing it!
The actual bass guitar part in the studio version is the bendy part played past the 12th fret that's played like a guitar. Deep Bass guitar doesn't come in until the tag/bridge in unison with the Arp Odyssey.
Very nice Rufus however that's not Paul Jackson's line but the Theme sub which is SWEET nice filter if you listen to this track the bass is playing some answer and call lines with that 2 bar Vamp Bbmi to Eb7 there is a nice grease line under this group!
You curl your picking fingers so drastically that I thought that you were missing the tips of your fingers. lol. Doesn't that hurt? Great lesson though. Right to the point. :)
Rufus P not in the slightest. In fact, I am trying to do this more. I watch videos of myself playing in order to make it more of a habit. I literally had to move through the video to make sure that you didn't have some sort of Jerry Garcia thing going on.
Otto hi! Thanks- Ok so...The pedals are: Source Audio Pro Envelope ( incredible ) and the monster TC Electronics Bass Octave Pedal ...Cheers, Rufus www.rufusphilpot.com
Nothing against your incredible playing... however, using the envelope may sound pretty cool but it makes it difficult, for at least me, to appreciate and hear what you are attempting to explain. It would be nice to hear the your explanation without the filter...

You usually end up playing this groove as the bassist of most jazz/funk bands though. It’s very applicable to bass.
Great ideas and great sound.
Cool bass mag. great content, thanks for that. I'm subscriber no. 9999. So CONGRATZ, for almost 10.000 subscribers.
nice variations! thanks for this

If it hurt I wouldn't do it. So no it doesn't, but thanks for the observation-which I am sure you didn't intend to be rude or offensive in any way.
