Quick Update - The fast fall buffer window is 3 frames, not 4. This means you have a total window of 4 frames to get a perfect fast fall, not 5. My bad! As a token of apology I will drop another video tonight. :D
I know this is a year old but i feel like I am getting this perfect. But the combo counter is not going up. In your vid its going up. Does this still mean im not fast enough?
I think by far the most common mistake is not canceling nair landing animation with dash. That’s what makes this combo so hard, the window between fast fall, dash forward, jump z drop is ridiculously small specifically between dash forward into jump z drop where the controller stick isn’t always fully reset and you get a forward bomb toss. A lot of people have trouble with this due to hardware limitations. Your control stick needs to be in mostly mint condition or you could really struggle. To be honest, combos like this requiring so much movement and so many unique inputs that need to take place within 2 or 3 frames should have frame by frame how-tos with explanations for each step. Pressing jump then immediately zdrop almost simultaneously and then A will give you a frame perfect zdrop raising nair. The fast falling just takes practice but you don’t hold down, you tap it once then without skipping a beat tap forward, not hold, right as you’re landing and then repeat while making extra sure the control stick still isn’t under a forward input.
I cannot for the life of me chain a single nair not in ½ speed not in ¼ speed or any other speed, am I nairing too early?? why can't I get a true combo, not one NOT ONE SINGLE DAMN CHAIN
It’s a ridiculously hard combo and nobody does it. These guys act like it’s some bread and butter essential link combo. You can watch top link players all day and you won’t see this combo once. I’ve literally never seen it done in a real match. The inputs are very fast, the opportunity window is very low (you have to be touching them) and it’s not safe on shield. I’ve seen Bernie go for it a couple times and he failed both times and he’s the most technical link player at the top level so that should tell you something. Honestly you’re just wasting your time with this one. I can do it and get the combo up to 6 but not consistently. It’s better to practice real things. If the people who make these videos were pulling these off like it’s nothing you’d see them tearing through brackets since these super technical maneuvers would be very effective if someone were actually doing them and we’re just not seeing that. These are time waster lab combos, not real combos. Practice bomb footstools and zdrop rising nair - the first part of the combo - out of shield. Those are actually useful, are similar with their inputs but don’t require you do this nearly frame perfect fast fall into dash buffer and repeat over and over which is what makes this combo so hard. You’re one frame off on that fast fall into dash buffer you’re getting blocked and upsmashed out of shield, that’s why no one does these.
If you really want to do it, play a game against a lvl 1 cpu and just practice it. Save your replay then watch it in the frame by frame and you can see where in the combo you’re going wrong. It’s probably between the fast fall and the next zdrop jump where there’s a dash. That’s where I have the issue. You want to literally hit the ground running and immediately jump again.
I'm very thankful for your channel. There's very few streamers and UA-camr that play Link, let alone give in depth guides on how to play him. Not only that but your link is God like.
Thanks for the guide! I had to ask around for advice when the ten advanced combos got released to get nair trains down, so I'm glad this video covers the combo so well!
I'm new to ssbu and I've been trying to get good at it and all your link videos have genuinely helped me get better (if only marginally so far) and have taught me how to play the game better in general so thanks for the awesome content and incredible link guides!!
If you guys have ZL of ZR as jump then you can buffer the aerial z-drop by hitting both the trigger on one side. From my experience this is easier than using other inputs.
So I have Y set to jump and R set to grab. I’m able to do the loop but my problem is sometimes link throws the bomb stopping the combo. I swear I’m clicking at the same time but it only trains loops about 50% of the time
Pressing z and jump at the same time always gives me the grounded throw and if I slightly delayed the z drop after my jump nair sends ike behind me. I have looked at it in all speeds and have no idea what I’m doing wrong
Hey! It is possible that if you perform Nair too early, it is impossible to get the combo counter? I tried with Frame-by-frame practice yesterday, and i couldn't make it count. I will surely keep trying!
Depends a bit on the situation. If you perfectly Nair at too low %, it will be tight, yes. But also there’s slightly more stun than the counter makes it out to be in the nair > zdrop phase
Question, if you begin nair train out of shield, most times you should be dashing in to start it still right? Unless you are right next to the opponent?
To dash you’d have to drop shield (11 or 7 frames). Which makes it quite slow. So indeed to do a nair train OoS you’d have to be right up in their face, which makes if less practical than a better OoS
I have a question: what's the difference between the z-drop loops with the other aerials (firts hit f-air and down throw to B-air)?, I mean the percentage to be used and the damage deal with it
Idk if this is just unfortunate coincidence, but my control scheme is set up to have an extra jump on the top left shoulder button. I use this one for stuff I cant use the normal jump for or is made easier than normal y/x jump. The training room reset happens to be the top left shoulder + Z + A, which is what I would be using for nair trains. If I go too fast, it resets, but if I delay the nair, (as to avoid the reset) it wont combo. I have to practice in non training mode, but then I dont get the combo counter to show if my timing is right. Kinda stuck. :c
That's how I started, it's not a bad idea to learn the basics of smash but unfortunately Lvl 9 CPUs behave in ways that humans never would. So it doesn't really help you beat more people, but it does help you master your own character better. :)
My advice for that is to not focus too much on winning but to focus on landing combo starters and combos in neutral and then save those matches and analyze what you do that could be punished (ie high nairs on shield or random smash attacks or spin attacks) and also don’t focus on reads focus on reactions cause cpus don’t make too much sense
As a link player, do you believe that all these tricks actually make Link higher tier especially if you can master it? Do these work better in real time games vs online? I'm currently wavering at 7.8 mill gsp and still don't know how to do self bomb trick, short hop without pressing two buttons, back air-back air suicide, and up-b out of shield correctly. I also don't know exactly what kills at what percentage except up throw if most enemy are at 160%. I haven't gone to tournaments to find out how I'd do, but I still manage to beat 70 to 80% of the links I come across at that gsp. Even when I see them busting out these techniques, I still beat them. Most usually know the self bomb trick by now but it didn't help the other guy too much.
tricky combos will definitely work better offline. Nair trains don't really change Link's tier placement, no. Some Links are very technical and tech-heavy, other are more simple. While the simple ones could benefit from some tech, the techy ones could probably polish their neutral and fundamentals. It's all about balance :)
This is pretty tough to master. Unfortunatly I have hit a road block in progress. I play on a pro controller and have my jump set to X and L (don't ask why) and biggest problem is that I keep jumping too high. I've never been that good at short hopping to begin with. Another problem is that the pro controller has a very strong flick back mechanism on the control sticks meaning I keep turning around mid combo because the controller thought I put an input in the opposite direction after I let go of the stick. But who knows, this may be beyond my skill level entirely.
Definitely not beyond your skill level! My pro controller also has tons of issue with snapback. That's unfortunately something that's hard to control. One way to avoid it is to never let go of the stick with your thumb. Never flick it, simply angle it in a direction and move it back. Lastly, for the short hop issues, that is 100% something you can easily practice. It'll soon become second nature to you. My advice for that is, try to slide your finger off the jump button really quickly, rather than trying to press it fast. Good luck!!!
I've learned the Nair loops, one question if my Bair loops don't count on the Combo meter does it mean it isn't true, because the Nair loops count in the meter
Bair 1 has 8 frames advantage and and rushing z drop is frame 4 so it only works against people with frame 3 or slower escapes (so most airdodges) but characters like snake and marcina or even someone like sonic or sheik with a frame 2 airdodge it doesn’t work against
The combo counter is a bit iffy, but these days it can be somewhat trusted. Bair loops are really tight, but you should be able to get the combo meter. So yeah, I'd say that your bair loops probably aren't true by a couple of frames.
YL’s Bomb doesn’t quite work the same way. Unless you mean Young Link with Link’s bomb? Anyhow, YL has 15 different ways to deal 50% off one combo, doesn’t even need nair trains :D
Quick Update - The fast fall buffer window is 3 frames, not 4. This means you have a total window of 4 frames to get a perfect fast fall, not 5. My bad!
