I found that "Elton John" album in my locker on the first day of high school in September 1970. I took it home and played on my plastic GE record player and didn't think much of it. Hey, I was only 14 at the time. It was his "Tumbleweed Connection" album that made me a fan. I bought it because I loved "Country Comfort." I showed the album to my grandmother and she made a crack "By next year you'll totally forget this guy." It's 43 years later and I'm still listening.

Elton John has played a huge musical role in my life. I was fortunate enough to see him live in concert. Ill never forget how he was on his knees, backwards, and played the piano solo in Bennie and the Jets. Amazing talents like John are few and far between. Appreciate him while we have him people!

Elton has been an essential part of the '70s & a constant interweaver through the '80s & '90s. But with Bernie he was phenomenal !
The Elton John album is, in my mind, an underrated excellent work. It has a classic pop selection with crafted music and lyrics, but there's smatterings of folk, medieval, gospel, even classical. This is a class album. There aren't many artists that can match those first 7/8 albums. He's a true English treasure 🎹🎵🤩🤠👍

USA in 1970 the Vietnam war was still blasting with no end anywhere in sight; the whole hippy, counter-culture, anti-social cultural scene which was TOTALLY in response to Vietnam (and the draft) was still hitting on all cylinders. @pjeno007 5 років тому +4

They also had Reggie as a kid singing 'I want love'. 'I'm Still Standing' was '83, but he entered rehab in '90, and that's whey the movie suggested that Bernie gave him the lyrics to 'standing. But I think they do it for better story telling.

    • @greghester953

@@pjeno007 In my book, there's no better story telling than the truth... especially when it's about Elton John and Bernie Taupin. There still seems to be some notion out there that Elton isn't the Beatles or the Stones and therefore his story needs help or embellishment. I say rubbish to that notion.

After seeing the Rocket Man movie this documentary comes as sweet relief. Not only did the BBC get the EJ history and timeline right, it's also refreshing to hear Elton's actual voice singing his songs. The movie really missed an opportunity to showcase some of Elton and Bernie's finest work from their early period. Instead, Rocket Man gave us two hours of above average karaoke of just the greatest hits. Unfortunately, people who only knew Elton because of Crocodile Rock and The Lion King (as referenced by Bernie in the documentary) will be no different.

@@daveconlin8342 The karaoke stylings of Taron Egerton may generate some interest in the catalog, but the dynamic nature of the ACTUAL MUSIC would probably get new fans to dive deeper. Taron's portrayal of Elton is sufficient to create interest in the historical figure of Reg Dwight, but I doubt his singing will send many to purchase the music.
