    I had goosebumps seeing the final result. It is true that when you look at this painting, you don't just see a painting of a woman, it's like she is real, a person with a story to tell, and everyone can find their own. As a big science fiction fan, I imagined her as some kind of replicant in the blade runner universe, having a moment of lucidity reflecting on her existence and humanity, maybe waiting to attend a formal government event as a decoy... Beautiful. With your way of explaining and your workflow and the background ambient music you chose, I was in a trans. A second visioning is mandatory for me to catch up on the information I need.

      That is so awesome awesome to hear. Wow, I can totally see the Bladerunner angle. That contemplative pose and the mix of noir style with some edgy futurism (pretty dress + tattoo) - that totally rings that BR bell :) Thanks for the comment, I'm so glad that you liked it :)

    This video focuses on three main subjects one must master: shape, values and simplicity. Can't stop watching this over and over... I knew it was not only because of your teaching style but because this painting rang a bell on my mind. I grew up in houses having replicas of a Spanish painter named Julio Romero de Torres whose main subject was the woman bornt in Cordoba (Spain). I could not help finding an astonishing resemblance in values, hues and poses of this great painting you made! Centuries and thousands of miles away yet the same principles! Mind-blowing! Makes me feel the urge to grab the stylus... Thanks Hardy!

    Stunning as always Hardy!
    It's a fascinating experience watching this, particularly after having so many of these techniques explained in the Academy with such detail, and knowing where you're at and what your doing with the the painting and the composition... but still seeing the magic happen -- and I do believe it's a type of magic -- as you paint. I mean, at some point, she just becomes very real and alive! And for the life of me I can't define where that moment is, but for certain the edge-light cements the impression. Always an awesome experience as a student and viewer to see when that happens. It's one of those 'I wanna do that!' moments that keeps me moving forward as an artist. Love It!
    Another thing to mention: As I'm sure you know, most of us wanna be's stalking the UA-cam channels searching for the secret to perfect art (snort... as if... right?) watch A LOT of different artists! That said: none I have seen to date have explained as much, as well, in such short amount of time as you have. Particularly when it comes to the feelings and impressions your trying to evoke in your painting. By doing that, I feel like it steers us away from the 'who's giving away the perfect brush set!' to the 'how do I bring my paintings and characters to life?' mind set.
    That's a far more lofty and challenging goal to reach... but so much more worth the effort and time to learn... and so much more valuable! Certainly far better than trying to find the, 'mixer brush chisel set with just enough opacity scatter to make everything you paint look amazing'.
    As always... Thank you!

      @fowlerillus  2 роки тому +2

      Wow Mike, thanks for the amazing note. I definitely feel that magic point that you're talking about. Actually I think that's one of my favorite parts of all of this - the moment when things start feeling real and alive. And yes, edge lights are always such a fun payoff - instant drama :) I really appreciate all of the support and encouragement.

    incredibly informative as allways hardy! i have a question for you, where did you learn the skin rendering technique from? the way you use the orange colour for values and then adjust it after with then adding the red undernieth. is this something you gradually figured out yourself? (no pun intended) its such a cool technique! thanks

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus  2 роки тому +13

      Thanks! Glad you liked it. That's a good question and I don't really remember exactly when I started doing that. I think I gradually figured it out myself or at least I don't remember picking it up from elsewhere. I just really liked the idea of being able to handle value and color separately and then combining the two so that it doesn't feel like a colorized grayscale. I hope the technique works for you!

    Terrific video. I really enjoy your painting technique. I have tried to follow a variety of digital and traditional artists (from comic to realist) - not sure why I hadn't seen you before... Quite a few methods of approach to achieve the same effect (from all the different artists). I certainly got several good tips and reinforcements of my own techniques from it. I'm pretty scattered as to how I build my drawings so I feel I'm always picking up a little bit from every good artist I run across. :)
    I would be interested in what you would have done if you had found (after all the portrait work was 'done') that the pose was untenable for what you wanted to do and needed to reposition the figure. For example, in the drawing above, what if you had decided to not finagle the chair but to go with a more cheeky moment and move her left leg so it is under her (she's, perhaps impatiently, sitting on her foot - maybe make the cushion red to emphasize the moment :)).
    It's the: 'when things go wrong, how do I fix them so they look right?' aspect that is also very instructive to me but I do not see addressed very often.
    Thanks for the great video!

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks! I'm glad this was helpful and it sounds like something you hadn't run into before - that's always cool. I've been a collector of techniques over the years too (I think we all are!) so there is certainly nothing to worry about there.
      That's a really interesting question and I think it depends on the situation. For things like pose, if something had gone as wrong as you've described, I would have tried to change what she was sitting on but it likely would have to be a chair so that her elbows would make sense. So in general, my advice is to make sure you plan for these details at the sketch phase since they can end up sinking a nice painting if something doesn't add up in the end. Man, that is a lesson I have learned painfully.
      You raise a good point too - I think that I need to loosen up on what I show in these demo paintings. This one went quite well and was pretty happy with it the entire time. That is definitely not always the case and I think that artists watching UA-cam videos would appreciate that kind of honesty - showing unsuccessful paintings too from time to time.
      Thanks for the awesome comment.

    Thanks!

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus  2 роки тому +2

      Right! I did that after getting the main skin tones established just to slightly darken and cool the colors a bit. It was seeming way too bright and warm for the nearly black background. I added two layers (one set to multiply, one set to overlay - just as you pointed out) and for both I just filled the figure's silhouette with a medium saturation cyan color. That's about it! I may have adjusted the transparency a bit to dial the effect up and down but I really like the treatment. It adds a bit of a moonlight atmosphere to the skin tones which I knew would pop well against those burning edge lights later. I hope that's helpful!

    This was an excellent study, glad to see your videos here as well as your classes on Skillshare. Your teaching on art is absolutely phenomenal! I wanted to ask two quick questions, are these done in real-time or is the process sped up. If it is a sped up video, do you have a means to keep track on your art work? (Sorry if I'm not making sense, the example would be line art-1 hour values-1 hour then clothing-30 mins, etc.)

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks! I'm really glad that you liked it. This is definitely sped up (to varying degrees throughout the video). This one was a bout 3 hours in total with some breaks in between. And yes, I'd say it broke down to about 1 hour line art, and 2 hours of rendering. The face takes the most time since it's such a priority. The dress and chair went fairly quickly and then it was just the finishing details and final polish.

    Seeing someone literally paint like a sculptor starting with a flat silhouette, slowly making the figure pop out made that axiom finally "click" in my brain. Now if only I can make the part about you using shapes rather than linework as building blocks(specifically the chair) click as well... details inside a shape just seem invisible to me without lines.

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus  2 роки тому +1

      Glad you liked it. You have perfectly described that big jump from line to shape. Other than value edge control, that was the other single biggest lightbulb moment for me. It's weird to consider at first since just about all artists keep line art very engrained in their process (since we all started sketching with a pencil). I hope this is helpful!

    • @Riku_nkmr
      @Riku_nkmr 2 роки тому

      @@fowlerillus huh… so basically just put shapes within shapes? I kinda saw that in your process too but it didn't quite register to me the same way as the sculptor thing did, I'll have to actually try it instead of just thinking about it. Thank you!

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus  2 роки тому +1

      @@Riku_nkmr Yes basically. I think the sculpting aspect might be the more valuable take away here, but in terms of shapes, that relates more to things like hair. Simplifying hair into a collection of shapes rather than thousands of lines. In general, trying to reduce the things that we see and paint into simple shapes in our mind. I'll have to do a video about this! :)

But I haven’t seen videos about drawing concept art scenes, such as you can see in artbooks for video games, with one character in different settings with different angles and different lighting. It's been a great change from my point of view because I feel like I can genuinely help 10-15 students get waaay better over 12 weeks of live study rather than writing 100 two sentence comments each day. I hate to leave any post or question unanswered but I think it's best way for me to maximize the impact I can have.
      Thanks again for your kind words. Makes my day :)

    Is it me or you paint without flow/opacity pressure? Isn't it harder to do than traditional blending?
    Btw. Stunning work!!! Wish I could shade so comfortable.

      Thanks! I definitely use flow and opacity. I keep both pretty low (around 20-30% for each) and I tap repeatedly to build up tones slowly which gives a lot of control. Pen pressure is set to brush size so when I need to needle into small spaces, I just tap lightly.

    I have gotten to the point in my art where I can compose the piece and I can draw it but then I get really stuck on the rendering because I get overwhelmed with "how do I decide what light to have and where it will be coming from" and even when I do decide on a light I'm not really sure how it will interact, like for firelight for instance. Do you have any tips for how to make that decision more easily?

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus  2 роки тому

      That's an interesting question. I guess it's a good idea to try to simplify things as much as possible. Limit things to one or two light sources and just focus on consistency. So using this painting as an example, there is the main light course coming from the upper right corner and then the edge light. That's basically it. There is some bounced light on her dress in a few places but it's pretty minor. For fire, I usually treat that as an edge light or a light coming below if you want the fire to make things seem sinister. So, to put it really simple, keep light sources as simple as possible and approach them one at a time. I hope that's helpful but reach out if you have any other questions. Cheers!

    Everything I took away:
    - Control your edges while painting
    - Suggest detail/create the illusion of detail, will have better results
    - Add the human touch to it, don't go into tiny detail be loose and abstract
    - Shape is everything, having the right gives a strong foundation
    - Does your character feel like a real person
    - Don't underestimate the power of the face.
    - Hands have personality
    - Observe for visual library, when have an idea you can go research, then assemble pieces to fit and be cohesive in the context of the world.
    - Create a memorable hook
    - Use extra details of culture and personality to push designs
    - Having elements from history can ground designs
    -only do what is necessary

    You talk about the many layers but never dissect them for people to understand what you mean. Your not discussing the tools you are using of why or how to colorize. Or the color choice and why.

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus  Рік тому

      That's totally true - this was more of a vague philosophical talk rather than a detailed tutorial so apologies if it wasn't what you were looking for. I'm working on lots of new people painting tutorials which go much more in depth.

    @Hardy Fowler - Digital Painting Studio hi hardy!
    I draw poorly. But really bad huh, like a little kid even though I'm an adult. :D But I don't care, I just put on some jazz and relax by drawing. I'm not good patience.
    But a curious thing happened:
    I tried your technique to give light you use in the beginning of video, on fetid :D drawing model of mine. It worked! the drawing improved a little bit, it still sucks but it's amazing how a technique seen in a video makes you improve right away. I LOVE watching you draw.
    A little music, you discussing, the drawing taking shape. I really like this style. ...so smooth!
