Thank you +ponyphonic for allowing me to sing your beautiful song. And thank you to the fans of this channel for opening your your hearts to a different take on this piece. I am honored. :-)
I have a theory as to why Luna may be so upset that her subjects sleep through her night. This took place about a thousand years ago. If Equestria's history mimics some of ours, then I know that in medieval times in real life, people used to think that the night air was toxic. They were terrified of darkness and would completely shut their homes to huddle together. Nobody would want to go out at night, they would board up their windows and sleep surrounded by thick curtains. If Equestria used to be like this, then I could see why Luna would get so upset, because it wouldn't just be about ponies needing sleep, they would actually hide from the night which would make her feel like total crap.
Wow, i'd be pissed too if I was Luna and they hid from my night and all the hard work I put into it. But im not Luna. But I can imagine how she felt. I think that theory is quiet believable.

+Cindy Calvin Ahh, now your are at the channel of the guy that actually wrote this song, Dane Larson! I was very lucky to have met Kristen (and worked with her - I met you too when we recorded this). Have a GREAT Mother's Day!!!
The impression of "The Moon Rises" for me is so much like "Let It Go" with Luna substituting Elsa. Both started with explaining their previous pain of live. And gradually building up to a point where their heart grew dark. (And somehow I like these kind of music)
That's a horrible comparison. Elsa was stuck with a mysterious power beyond her comprehension that while powerful, meant she could never be close to her family or sister without risking killing them, causes an incident at her coronation and flees into the wilderness to live in isolation. Luna deliberately turns against her only family member out of neglect, trauma and spite, and tries to kill Celestia to usurp the throne and rule under night forever. One is being trapped with an immutable trait that hurts yourself and others and hating yourself for it, the other is _deliberate attempted fratricide._
i do get those let it go vibes from this song! though the context is different, in some ways it’s similar. both luna and elsa embrace their power and become more free to do as they wish, it’s just that luna’s transformation was sinister :D
I use to think she was just being silly for what she did, all because she was jealous. Until I starred thinking. Imagine you have a sister, she’s older, practically perfect in every way. Let’s say she has a special event, everyone shows up. Family, your sisters friends because you don’t have any, even you. She of course nails it, and everyone cheers and celebrates for her. But you also have an activity, say...horse back riding or sports. You also invited everyone. You win, and look into the crowd with a smile on your face. You look at all the faces cheering, and the smile on your face disappear, because none of the faces cheering are people you know. Your family, sisters friends, classmates, none of them showed up. You’re upset about something, or going through depression, nobody pays attention to you so nobody helps you, you face everything on your own. Your sister talks about her interest, like being a doctor or something. And everyone is interested and giving feedback, you do the same thing, people talk over you, they don’t pay attention, or they criticize your choice of interest, even if it’s the same as your sister, talking about how you’re not skilled enough to do such a thing. Now, you are granted the power to change all of that, years of hate in your heart, you choose the wrong option, revenge. Luna’s actions had serious consequences. She was practically possessed by the darkness. When the evil was sucked from her she admitted she missed her Sister and was sorry. When she gave over to the darkness, she wasn’t in control. When you have the opportunity to get revenge such as Luna, dont choose the wrong option, you may ruin your life. Something tells me you don’t live past 1000 years of punishment.
The punishment is in fact longer than a thousand years, it's eternity in hell and unlike Princess Luna, there is no escape after you get there, the only way to escape it is to put your faith in Jesus Christ, who died around 2,000 years ago in our place to absolve us of our sins, past, present, and future, that my friend is the only escape.
I was so excited to see some ponyphonic on my subs feed this morning! I love the through-composed nature of this as well as how we can hear the voice of Luna slowly shift into Nightmare Moon over time. Bravo!
+Bassoonify Wow, I never noticed her voice becoming Nightmare Moon before your comment! It such a striking contrast now that I look for it, don't know how I managed to miss it.
the fact that at the start the sadness is so clear but then she begins to become so angry and the emotion in the vocals is so prominent and clear great work : )
Absolutely fantastic. Ponyphonic's music & lyrics (extended, even!), Kristen's beautiful, powerful & evocative voice, and DarkFlame's stellar artistic contribution (esp. love the font, and the wistful way she's staring up @ the moon)... Brilliant.
Beautiful, a song fit for the true princess, absolutely majestic! Let the moon rise, all hail the new Lunar Republic! Now we just have to wait 2.5 years for the animation
Personally, Celestia is best Princess, Twilight is my Waifu and Luna makes my favorite time of day possible. Therefor, I live in the New Lunar Republic.
The original was the first thing I heard made by the fandom after joining in between seasons 3 and 4 so it always has had a special spot for me. This sent chills through me, taking such a great song and making it even better, the new lyrics feel like they belong and were not just added on.
I prefer this version over Eilie Monty's (sorry if I spelled her name wrong!) I like it because there is great emotion and Kristen's voice is slightly lower and more like Luna's in this version Both are really good and I respect your opinion because they're both close and not so different from each other.
I kinda liked Elie's cover because Kristen kinda paised randomly at some points and that kinda bothers me for some reason, it still sounds great though
This is astounding. from the amazing piano to the stunning vocals and voice of the singer. I really liked how the singer sang like how Luna felt back at those days before she became Nightmare Moon - shouting out of anger because the reasons she had (In the description above) - but still keeps her beautiful voice. incredible song, Ponyphonic, keep up the good work.
I don't think it'll go that well. The singer in this video is actually a singer on television and sang the national anthem during a professional baseball game. I don't think Ellie Monty has a chance anymore lol. I mean, you can really feel the emotion in the way she's singing. Kudos to her.
I love all these music! It is so beautiful and professional. Whenever something new comes out I buy it instead of downloading it to support the artist who composes these. It is just so beautiful.
Okay, I'm beyond chills !!! My heart was sooo full of emotion, hearing this beautiful song sung by the princess of the moon! I felt it build from hurt to exploding anger as she prepares to take over the daylight ! What an amazing job Kristen ! You brought it to life and took me through the story and brought me to tears ! I LOVED it !!!!
I just wanna say, this song nearly had me in tears. It's beautiful, and it really captures everything I envisioned Luna feeling before she made the decision to make the night last forever. On a more personal note, I'd like to say thank you for yet another song that inspired how I portray the princesses in my writing. You are amazing and I can't wait for your next piece!
Send this to an animator. This was amazing, it feels like Luna's rising to Lullaby for a Princess. Of course the lyrics show it, as well as the title- extremely creative in both aspects. The song was extremely diversified in almost every setting. I loved the falls in this song like 0:51-56. So much emotion, I could even feel it in the percussion- not just about the dynamics.Keep your ego under control if you read this, the downfall of every great musician in history is their ego.
ok - now this version outdone itself completely I'll admit that I'm used to previous version and your voice actually fits good for song sung by Luna, yet this has kind of charm that makes my mane crawl and shiver amazing
WOW! The original of this song is very dear to my heart, and I was sceptical to hear Kristen at first, but as soon as I heard the TRUE POWER of her voice BELTING the emotion of Luna I was instantly sold. Truly a phenomenal piece of music!
Phew, I almost thought I was the only one who wasn't too happy with Eilemonty's cover of this song. She did a great job no doubt. But more than once I felt there was a small edge of autotune that really took the authenticity of the song.
Wow. Bravo. What can I say, but, it's a true testament to the source material when it inspires tributes of such quality. A testament to the fandom as well, which consistently produces material which is in many ways as fine as what it's designed to pay homage to.
When I saw that this was updated, I felt a chill. I still think PKEmi' s version is my favorite, simply for the chill it always gives me, but this update is amazing beyond words.
Me too. In terms of raw emotion and heartfeltness, this song just pulls those heart strings like nothing. Just forces the tears out of your eyes. The fan animation by PonyPreservation, takes that raw emotion and heartfeltness up a notch.
I didn't even know that this would be an updated version, I thought this was going to be the original with a different thumbnail, you can imagine the goosebumps I got when I heard the new singer, especially when I heard the new verse!
The Master hath returned!! Seriously I wish I could write music like this, you were able to add on to the already great melody and add another section that improves the overall feel of the song. Seriously great work and great singing by Kristen she nailed it!!
Ok... I admit, I discovered this song through Duo Cartoonist who is doing an animation of it, and it looks ABSOLUTELY STUNNING so far, even with the Animatic bits being that it's a WIP, and while I like what they do towards the end, giving the "vocal duet between Luna and Nightmare Moon before it's JUST Nightmare Moon", I have to admit I don't think I like EilieMonty's laugh at the end, and if I spelled her name wrong, I apologize. However, I must say that this song is absolutely GORGEOUS and I'm soooo glad I found it. Very well done. I honestly haven't heard anything this amazing since Lullaby for a Princess, yet another gorgeous song I heard from you guys
I am so glad you guys extended it! I always thought it was too short, and that extra verse really adds to the atmosphere, and the singer is a female this time--sweet! AND SHE IS PERFECT! I don't need a cover now, I'm perfectly content with her. Thank you so much for doing this! *claps* :D :D :D
What a huge surprise!!! :D. I didn't expect something like this, but it fits a lot with the updated "Lullaby" you posted not that long ago. Kristen sounds amazing! :D
It's a good version, but it seems as if the pitch was higher than the singer is entirely comfortable with. I also want to say the emotion felt more authentic in your own voice, but I think that's just a familiarity bias. It's still a hauntingly beautiful song and well performed and characterized by Miss Calvin. EDIT: I am ambivalent about the inserted part. It fits very well, it is a good part, the text feels right, but - it interrupts the buildup to the end rather harshly. Oh and please everyone understand one thing: I love it. I do not care to criticise what I do not value. I have listened to this and the Lullaby so many times I cannot even count. All I say I try to say with respect and I do say it with love.
I agree with pretty much everything you said, very much including the familiarity bias part, and you said it far better than I could. The new part does feel like it takes away from the buildup, as it is a decidedly calmer part than those before and after it. That buildup of emotion and power, both in singing and the instruments, was one of those things I absolutely loved about the original. All that said, there's no doubt in my mind that as I'll grow more used to this new version it'll grow on me. It is such a beautiful song, after all.
+NotMeButAnother I too feel really bad about saying this, because Miss Calvin may have a very fine voice for certain things, but this was just way too much a stretch for her instrument. She is not yet ready, or have the vocal range to be a Broadway belter-torch singer. Maybe some day, but not now. Again, I don't want to crap on somebodies hard work, and wish her all the best in her singing career and am now going to check out more of her work on her channel, because she does seem to have potential. I personally don't have a problem with people singing songs meant for the opposite gender. The original version far better captured the pain, and beauty, of this amazing song.
+NotMeButAnother I definitely agree with you, but I feel as though she might be trying to dramatize her tone of voice at certain lyrics in the song such as at ua-cam.com/video/4vBJAgbiBTY/v-deo.html when she sings "..adore me" in a bit of a romantic tone which is kind of jarring compared to how she sings "Why shouldn't they.." in an angry tone of voice and it is inconsistent with the tone of the song. Another issue is that I think that she might also have a bit of a whistle or a sharp "hiss" to her s's. For instance at ua-cam.com/video/4vBJAgbiBTY/v-deo.html And one other problem may be in how she sings some parts like at: ua-cam.com/video/4vBJAgbiBTY/v-deo.html It might just be my bias from listening to the original too many times but her singing of "...in an eternal lullaby..." feels odd for some reason. But up until 1:27 and for some points after I think she sounds perfect. She really really captures the voice of Luna and overall, I think the song is fantastic and that Miss Calvin is a wonderful singer in it.
Wow, it's great to see that this song is still getting some love. It was definitely one of my favorites from early on a few years ago and that it finally got an extended version is great.
HOLLY CRAP HOLLY CRAP HOLLY CRAP!!!! CELESTIA HOLD ME!!!! That first drop at the beginning sent shivers up my spine. I loved it. I love all of your songs!
THIS IS AMAZING!!! I love Elie Monty's but every time she sang... I don't know. I always pictured Celestia because, in my opinion, she sounds like her. Hearing someone different dig for Luna was refreshing and it sounded like her! This was a beautiful cover!!!
This is amazing. I first noticed with Lullaby of a princess, then Starlight Waltz the full one, and you are one of the artists i'd come to for a peaceful tune. Thought you really can't call this peaceful xD Althought in it's own way it is.
I like how the singer actually sounds like Luna. I also appreciate the fact that the singer sounds angry for most of the song, emphasizing the emotion that canonically drowned the Moon Princess's sanity.

Celestia's Decision (The Sun RIses)
---
Another day dawns over Equestria, but it is not to last. Nightmare Moon casts Equestria into darkness, much to the regret of her elder sister. As Celestia struggles against Nightmare Moon, she must decide between her love for her younger sister and her duty to her subjects....
---
(Celestia to herself, staring out at the sunrise)
Now the dawn has come at last
The soft and brilliant light
Has crossed the east horizon
And swept away the night
And what a lovely dawn it is
To walk through field and glen
To stand amidst the brilliance
as another day begins
So why is it that now,
When all my kingdom is awake
When sunbeams glow and all the world
within their light partake
My dearest sister Luna you
Should lock yourself away
To shun my love and hide instead
while I command the day?
(Celestia, to Nightmare Moon)
Am I so wrong to wish that I
Had tried to care for you?
And am I so wrong to think
My friends should love you too?
Why must our people suffer?
Can't you see this is not right?
We were meant to rule together!
Mine is not the greater light!
I've loved you dearest Luna,
Hoped that you would come around
But if the Moon shall plead and threaten,
The Sun must stand her ground!!
(insert Celestia vs. Nightmare Moon battle scene a la Lullaby for a Princess or Season 4 flashback. Celestia falls from the sky and opens her eyes. The Element of Magic can be seen reflected in her pupils. As she rises to her hooves, she begins singing the next part.)
It comes to this; I fear:
I will not let you rule the sky
If you cannot keep the harmony I've sown
See, the Sun is rising
She has come to save the sister she has known!
And all will know the wonder
Of my bright and radiant light
As I preserve harmony thought it pains my heart to fight!
So say goodnight to this,
The final dusk of Nightmare Moon!
Eternal night has ended;
The dawn will return soon!
Cool
Thanks!

🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹💖✨💖✨💖✨💖✨✨💖✨💖✨💖✨💖✨💖✨💖✨💖✨😘☺️I am so proud of my daughter !!! Not just her talent, but her character, gerousity& for the joy and happiness that she gives to all whom are lucky enough to meet her !!!!! This is a gorgeous song ,sang beautifully by " My Special Angel " , Kristen Calvin
+Cindy Calvin Ahh, now your are at the channel of the guy that actually wrote this song, Dane Larson! I was very lucky to have met Kristen (and worked with her - I met you too when we recorded this). Have a GREAT Mother's Day!!!
What a lucky parent you are!
*Don’t connect Disney with this.*
i do get those let it go vibes from this song! though the context is different, in some ways it’s similar. both luna and elsa embrace their power and become more free to do as they wish, it’s just that luna’s transformation was sinister :D
I haven't heard the original but I immediately fell in love with this. The vocals and composition is lovely. :3
Same...
Personally, I prefer the male voice, but both versions are very lovely c:
same name
funny seeing you here
I'm getting a sorta Prince of Egypt vibe. Incredible
Is there a word for something so epic that the word epic isn't epic enough to describe it? If that word exists, this is a example of that word.
there are two words : this video
Everything is relative. Just use the word 'epic' less, and reserve it specifically for situations like this. You're welcome.
+Marriuz Well if they use the word epic less it would mean more but if someone heard them use that word and they use it a lot it wouldn't mean as much
You are absolutely right. Which is why the world is a dark, dark place.
Maybe epic^2
Oh damn... Thats deep
It's a story as old as time. It's the reason why Cain was driven by jealousy to murder Abel.
@@bewarethedarkness4721 that's it exactly.
I love this in-depth explanation!
Goosebumps. This gave me goosebumps.
I may have stopped watching the show a while back, but who says I can't enjoy the stuff the fans create?
So I am not overly fond of the MLP fandom, but holy shit some of the talent of the fans is AMAZING. This is VERY well done and beautiful!
Am I the only one that wants a musical play made from this and lullaby for a princess with dazzling costumes and actors?
I love the new verse. I think each version and singer adds something unique to the song and I can't really pick a favorite
Thanks so much for sharing this updated version! This has always been one of my favorite pony songs ever, and the added verse is fantastic.
And I didn't think that the original song could get any more beautiful. Huge round of applause
This is the first piece of pony fan music I've ever paid for.
I loved the original, but THIS...... this is beyond words.......
It's been two YEARS since I last asociated myself with the brony community, I am very glad to see that it's creativity still thrives.
Same thing, bro.
How did you manage to avoid the Brony fan works on UA-cam?
*rabbid sloth sound* ima gon 2 bite you.... i love lack or sleep
+n8thegr8 impossible. we are everywhere.
Ariana Darcia
It's not so active and energic nowadays.
the fact that at the start the sadness is so clear but then she begins to become so angry and the emotion in the vocals is so prominent and clear
great work : )
It's a crime that I'm just now discovering this song, with how much I love Nightmare Moon.
CHILLS. I was hoping for a remake of this, and it's better than I ever imagined!
I can feel the anger in this one. Gave me one or two chills! Bravo!
The original was the first thing I heard made by the fandom after joining in between seasons 3 and 4 so it always has had a special spot for me. This sent chills through me, taking such a great song and making it even better, the new lyrics feel like they belong and were not just added on.
Fun fact: the Latin at 1:10 , "In umbra Luna est," translates to "Luna is in the shade / shadow"
No that means the moon is in shade/shadow.Since in Latin the Luna word means moon
@Skylar Cadwell ok
Dude... that gave me chills. I mean, the original version did that, too, but this one made me feel like I needed to get a freaking jacket.
I had the chills when the bridge came on, pleasant surprise!!
I prefer this version over Eilie Monty's (sorry if I spelled her name wrong!)
I like it because there is great emotion and Kristen's voice is slightly lower and more like Luna's in this version
Both are really good and I respect your opinion because they're both close and not so different from each other.
I wish this singer was the one who sang Luna's Reply ...
In my opinion, the singer who sang "Luna's Reply" was lovely, but her voice is just too weak to do a song like this.
***** I agree. She had a beautiful voice, but it kinda quavered in matching the notes.
I want to hear Ellie Monty cover the extended version.
I don't think it'll go that well. The singer in this video is actually a singer on television and sang the national anthem during a professional baseball game. I don't think Ellie Monty has a chance anymore lol. I mean, you can really feel the emotion in the way she's singing. Kudos to her.
Well, my wish came true at least. *EileMonty covered the extended addition for Duo Cartoonist's animation.
I'm literally amazed at how powerful her voice is, it's sounds amazing!
Even the great and powerful Disney (or Dreamworks for that matter) hasn't done something this awesome and dramatic in this century. Bravo!
Your beautiful work will be deemed well and magnificent for every generation to come.
I'm crying this is so beautiful. Amazing job. I love it.
sooooooooo epic......still want a whole musical!!
I love all these music! It is so beautiful and professional. Whenever something new comes out I buy it instead of downloading it to support the artist who composes these. It is just so beautiful.
I can never get over how soothing and full that vibrato is. I don’t think I’ve ever heard one that’s better.
This game me chills. So haunting and beautiful. How is this singer not a professional? She has amazing talent!
WOW! The singing, the lyrics, and the music are absolutely AMAZING!
i was unaware that a newer version of this song had been made... love the voice of the singer
It's like hearing the original again for the first time! This is incredible!
I love the moon rises so much, it feels like an actual song in the show
Beautiful. Simply beautiful. You did a amazing job with this.
+A'ss Destroyer Duo Cartoonist is almost done with the animation of this song AND... Dane (Ponyphonic) is the most humble person you would ever meet.
It's so relieving to hear that.
ok - now this version outdone itself completely
I'll admit that I'm used to previous version and your voice actually fits good for song sung by Luna, yet this has kind of charm that makes my mane crawl and shiver
amazing
I still love this song after 7 years
WOW! The original of this song is very dear to my heart, and I was sceptical to hear Kristen at first, but as soon as I heard the TRUE POWER of her voice BELTING the emotion of Luna I was instantly sold. Truly a phenomenal piece of music!
You're amazing! I can't believe that duo cartoonist didn't use your version!
Phew, I almost thought I was the only one who wasn't too happy with Eilemonty's cover of this song. She did a great job no doubt. But more than once I felt there was a small edge of autotune that really took the authenticity of the song.
Opal Shade Yeah I agree it did sound a bit strange. This version has way more emotion that would've fit the animation perfectly.
Wow. Bravo. What can I say, but, it's a true testament to the source material when it inspires tributes of such quality. A testament to the fandom as well, which consistently produces material which is in many ways as fine as what it's designed to pay homage to.
+Joe England Ponyphonic made the original this isn't a tribute.
+dab kilm The source material is the show itself. Ponyphonic didn't create My Little Pony.
+dab kilm - I meant that it's a tribute to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
They should DEFINATLY use this song in the series someday. Like or replay if you agree
That was magical. I love the new verses! Excellent work, ponyphonic, and kudos to Ms. Calvin!
Outstanding, breathtaking, stunning. My jaw dropped the first time I heard it, I am watching the clock for Duo Cartoonist's animation.
When I saw that this was updated, I felt a chill. I still think PKEmi' s version is my favorite, simply for the chill it always gives me, but this update is amazing beyond words.
+Andrew Halverson As much as I think this is great, I have to agree with you on this one. :)
My love for this song is unbearable. Kristin is the best singer for this song. Thank you for making this song.
+ponyphonic
Kristen Calvin dod a wonderful job singing this! I love the emotion she puts into her voice. Great job you guys!
Anyone in 2024?? 🧡🧡🔥
Rawr
It's 1:30am. Was going to go to bed, but found this. I think I'll be listening to this for a while yet.
I'm speechless at the beauty of this cover, absolutely astounding.
Ooh! The new verse is absolutely beautiful! 😍 another reason to love this song.
WHAT THE EVEN THIS IS SO AMAZING.THE VOCALS AND THE ADDED LYRICS ARE INCREDIBLE!!!!! I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!
I agree with you on her voice, her voice at some parts seem off
I agree with pretty much everything you said, very much including the familiarity bias part, and you said it far better than I could.
For instance at ua-cam.com/video/4vBJAgbiBTY/v-deo.html
And one other problem may be in how she sings some parts like at: ua-cam.com/video/4vBJAgbiBTY/v-deo.html It might just be my bias from listening to the original too many times but her singing of "...in an eternal lullaby..." feels odd for some reason.
But up until 1:27 and for some points after I think she sounds perfect. She really really captures the voice of Luna and overall, I think the song is fantastic and that Miss Calvin is a wonderful singer in it.
+Light Solver Hi, regarding the "s" problem, that was an error on my part, and the Bandcamp version has been fixed in that respect.
Wow, it's great to see that this song is still getting some love. It was definitely one of my favorites from early on a few years ago and that it finally got an extended version is great.
This is just PERFECT. So emotional. And because of that even better than the orginal. Replay button is broken.
This was a beautiful cover!!!
woah, all the things you added just made it so much more amazing.
Amazing. So sad though. Luna is such an amazing pony.
she had one sentence, and she just had a plus on this song. OMG it's a such butifull work !
Ponyphonic back at it again and breaking our feels
MY GOD THIS SIMPLY PERFECT i wanted a new version since i heard the old one and this one is simply perfect fav and like
It was a strong song 10 years ago, but it still touches my heart
Absolutely gorgeous work once again, Ponyphonic. I adored the original, now you've made me love the song even more so! Keep up the amazing work
This is amazing. I first noticed with Lullaby of a princess, then Starlight Waltz the full one, and you are one of the artists i'd come to for a peaceful tune. Thought you really can't call this peaceful xD Althought in it's own way it is.
I lovelovelove this song! Both versions are so amazing. Lyrically speaking it's my favorite pony song ever.
am i the only one who noticed that the beghining piano music is the mlp opening? it goes my little pony 2x aahaa
OH MY GOD YOUR RIGHT
Omg ... I didn't relize that
I don't know what happened in Equestria 1000 years ago, but the animation and the song is very beautiful, I love it thank you.
Just received the biggest eargasm in my life 5 stars, no make it 10, make it over 9000
OK. I thought you can never make The Moon Rises better. I was wrong. This is so much better.
This genuinely gave me chills.
Well done!
