Came from accounting to be a teacher. I loved making a difference in a child’s life. I made more money as an accountant and would think at times about my business colleagues making more money and company match to 401k accounts. Now that I am retired, I realize how much money I lost being a teacher. That is a tough decision to make, however, I am glad I became a teacher. I received many letters from students thanking me for caring and guiding them!

I taught C at Olympic College in Bremerton, WA for one year. I loved it, but the pay was not good. After lesson plans, grading work, office hour, assistance with projects, etc. I calculated that I was making less than minimum wage. I probably would have done better if I taught more than one class and lesson plans can be reused. Working as a senior software engineer I get absurdly more compensation than I got from teaching. I have enormous respect for teachers because I believe they are serving the community in a powerful way. I think teachers are a very important factor in the lives of our children.
I worked my way from teacher to administrator and I get over 4k per month for the rest of my life. Only took 22 years in education to get this in Texas.
The society must understand that what we put in our children shape the future the world. That makes teaching one of the most important jobs for all of us. I am thankful to the teachers that educated me.
Hi Julie, you make excellent points in your video. Teachers are incredibly overworked and underpaid, and it has always disturbed me when I've heard people making dismissive comments about the profession. I know people who make those comments are just ignorant and have no idea how difficult it is to be a teacher. I am sure you will be missed when you retire. I wish you great success with your channel! This info is spot on. My daughter is a teacher. She wants to change careers. TSA 'agents' at the airport make the same as teachers and the only requirement is to be 18 yrs old and have a high school diploma. They (blueberry TSA agents) get a federal pension (FERS) and have TSP (thrift savings plan). Teacher compensation in this country is sad and outrageous.
Have her teach in CA. I have 4 teacher friends in CA and they are starting to retire now and will get 80-93% of their salary after 25-35 yrs of teaching and a COLA.

I used to be a teacher in California, pay is not bad but the stress is way too much I had to quit. I know how much work teachers do so I have much respect to those who are still in the profession. Teachers deserve respect and big pay. Imagine all the kids they have to babysit, teach, entertain through the day so parents can go to work.
Wow, this video is outstanding and truly priceless! This is why in the early 1980's, I earned a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering ... not because of any money ... but because, I loved the field and career of engineering. Last year, I retired in my early 60's. Why? Because, I want to also enjoy the rest of my life while, I am in good health (smile...smile).
So everything we read about teachers getting large pensions is true. Most people have to work 30-40 years anyway. I hardly think sticking it out for 32 years is a huge deal.

One of my dearest colleagues became a teacher later in life, and her husband-who worked very hard himself in a manual labor job and had the common misconception that teachers had a “cush” job- soon expressed his amazement that his wife, and all the rest of us, were essentially always working (even in summer, when ostensibly on vacation”). 😂☺️
Thank you for your video. I work in education as well, and i completely agree that we work way more than the contractual hours. You named the few common reasons why we work more than 8 hours a day. However, we should also include the staff development days, parenting meetings/conferences, IEPs and SST/504 meetings, which most likely are held before or after school hours.
This is different in every state. I am 23 year veteran NYC teacher and make 137000 . If I leave now I will be able to collect 45k pension. If I make the 25 year mark it will be 70k. Also, I will be able to collect social security when I reach the age. Those that can't collect also did not pay into it.
In Texas teachers get a week vacation for Thanksgiving, two weeks at Christmas, and a week at Spring break. In addition they get 5 days sick leave and 5 days personal leave per year. True. - summer is not paid therefore yearly annual salary is lower than comparable degrees
Dave Ramsey made no disparaging comments about teachers. He only said that of the millionaires that were in his study said they were self reported to be teachers. It just proves that even with a modest or low salary invested in an IRA over 40 years will make you a millionaire. Add to that an even modest pension and Social security you should live much better in retirement than most people. Teachers that are unhappy in their carrier choice should leave immediately. Good teachers that try to do their jobs the best they can are wonderful and special.
As the parent of a soon to be 5th grader and a soon to be kindergartner, I love our teachers at our local school. We tried homeschooling during Covid and I quickly realized I’m not cut out for it 😂. Our school district has good breaks for students and teachers (the whole week at thanksgiving and spring break, as well as winter and summer breaks), but that’s a perk they deserve as far as I’m concerned. My older daughter currently says she wants to be a teacher. It offers a good salary, a good amount of time off and a good retirement plan. Even the opportunity to be a sub if you don’t want to work full time is a great thing (my mom does that in her pseudo retirement). Every job has pros and cons.
Best teacher job is the gym teacher. As told to me by a gym teacher. You are correct but it’s a little different where I’m at. No way I’d be a teacher, especially with the kids around me. My advice is go get a public safety fire department job. Find who has the best pension and apply. Go get your paramedic license and you will get hired almost immediately. I’ll be retired at 53 with a full pension and health insurance. Other then some mild PTSD, I’m fine 🙂✌🏼
Great job Julie! My Grandmother, Mother and Sister have all been teachers. My sister has a Masters and after 27 years, she is making $60K. Teachers seem to forget about Fall break, Christmas Break, Thanksgiving break and Spring break and Easter break. When you include all this time off, a teacher spends about 8 months a year in the classroom. Who else works 32 weeks a year and gets paid $60k with great benefits? I am jealous of my sister. I should have been a teacher!!
Thanks! We don't get a Fall break or an Easter break in my district! We get 2 days at Thanksgiving, a spring break, and Christmas break. All unpaid of course! but yes, I really enjoyed my job for a ling time!
@@HappyonMonday The local system gets 3 days for a Fall Break and Easter. They also have 4 Snow Days calculated into their schedule. If they don't use them for snow, they have 4 weeks with only 4 days of school in April and May.
My older daughter graduated as an Occupational Therapy Assistant ( a 2 year degree) and right out of the gate she got a job making more money than I was making as a RN with a 4 year degree that had 30+ experience in nursing, and despite that I was working in a specialty field.

Here in Massachusetts, we pay our teachers well……generous pensions too. It costs a little more, but it’s much better than being surrounded by uneducated, ignorant people.

I work in public education in Wisconsin and in my district teachers do not get paid during the summer. They are responsible for saving up money or planning additional work for those months. Im on an 11 month contract for my position and I still struggle every year to save enough for the month of no pay. And after being an occasional substitute in various schools I certainly do not think teachers are paid enough for the things I've seen. It blows my mind how far from reality most people's perceptions of the profession are.
I live in Wisconsin. The teachers union is terrible. The public schools and the educated cannot budget money and time. One example look up public records teachers salaries on any teacher. 75 grand for a gym teacher teaching kickball. Medical coverage is cover huge benefit and spouse for life retire at 55 and get paid till 95 40 years. on the public dole. while other professions have to budget and save. meanwhile teachers unions stick it to the taxpayer . Teachers do not get reviews. bad ones do not get fired..what an expensive mess. Time to shut down the public schools down ...always wanting more. A better idea would be to sell the expensive mess to the teachers and their unions and let them compete in the real world. Try being a nurse and not have summers off .Oh and when the union cannot take care of the guaranteed pension stick it to the tax payer again as some right outside of the market place as being some holy er than thou profession. Oh its for the children. ya right

Sign up for healthcare (COBRA, ACA, etc.) a couple months ahead List income sources and start dates (pensions, SS, IRAs, CD ladders, etc.) List when you can draw from retirement (59 ½) When to apply for property tax exemption When to file for SS (at least 30 days ahead) When SS will start When to apply for Medicare (3 months before you turn 65)
Wait, only 15 states get social security if you're a teacher? Do you pay social security taxes? My son graduated with his bs in mathematics and wants to be a math teacher so im curious.
In 15 states teachers do NOT get social security. They also do not pay social security taxes from what I understand. I believe those teachers get larger pensions. I live in Washington state. We do pay social security taxes and we do get SS. But we also get a smaller pension than states where they don't get SS. Teachers in Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island and Texas are not enrolled in Social Security.
@@HappyonMonday , but we are penalized if we work other jobs….like in college, summers, retirement….and pay into SS. We receive only 1/3 of our earned SS. This MAY change soon IF Biden signs the Windfall Exclusion Law. Keep in mind though that those of us who retired many years ago will never recoup what the government held back from us.
I have never been a teacher, but based on what you shared, I believe they should get ride of pensions and replace them with a 401b (similar to a 401k). Like a 401k, the 401b is very portable, meaning its in your name and no one can touch it but you. If you move jobs, you simply roll it over to your new employers 401b, 401k, or an IRA. I have never been part of a pension, but I know enough from others experiences that it is not truly your money and it relies to much on the company or government organization that you worked for to ensure they can fulfill the promises they made to you. For this reason, I told my wife to transfer her pension to an IRA.
The teachers I know here in Ohio all make at or over a 100k and they get paid all year even though they are off every single weekend and every single possible holiday and 10weeks in the summer and spring break. The pensions are very very good. Easily equivalent to having a 2 mil dollar 401k with 4% distribution. And that pension only took a contribution of 10% of their salary. Most only had to work 30-32 yrs to get that pension. My wife is a teacher. We live close to her school. She leaves at 7 and gets home at 3. She never gets called after hrs. Never has to go in on a Saturday and gets more holidays off than I knew existed plus all the random days off for reasons I have no idea. Then there is the week off for the county fair and spring break weeks. All totalled up she only works about a half year and gets the exact same check twice a month all year long.
@@HappyonMonday Her district isn’t a high paying one but everything else applies. A guy I work with openly tells his wife makes a 106k in the Westerville Ohio school district. And if she works 32yrs the pension is absolutely huge too.
Average teachers with 10 years of experience in Chicago where I live is making about close to 100k, not including benefits. Some in the wealthier Illinois suburbs are making close to 150k. CTU makes it hard to get rid of the bad teachers. In private sector, people can get fired the next day, most of the health plan are high deductibles, and no pension benefit. I get it that in certain part of the US, teachers can make about $50k or less.
In my district they take our hours worked during the school year and divide it by 12 months. So we get checks in the summer for hours worked during the school year. But yes, many teachers work second jobs in the summers to make ends meet!
Local tenured teachers make 90-105k. They also have the best health insurance that they don't pay a dime for. They also only work roughly 195 days per year (and don't work full 8 hour days with multiple "planning periods"). They complain when they have to take work home, yet in the private sector this is common practice, on top of working longer hours. And yes they get a guaranteed pension on top of that. Aaaaaaaaaaand they still complain!
Thanks for your comment. I personally have one 40 minute planning period that I work during grading papers and planning. I also work through my 30 minute lunch that I don't get paid for. If you watched the video to the end, I explain that pensions are NOT guaranteed. You have to work in your state system for many years to receive even a small pension. My intention was not to complain, but to clear up misconceptions.
@HappyonMonday so I think we're discussing two different things here. Pensions are guaranteed...it was put into state law in the late 90s. While, sure...you have to work like 30 years to get the full benefit - the point is, guaranteed anything is not available in the private sector. I'm not sure why teachers think they get special treatment. Anyone in the private sector will have to invest in the stock market to make any real return - and that can cut in half and guess what, there's nothing that can be done. In our state we'll just raise taxes to ensure teachers continue their pensions at full value. On another note, it must be teachers that propagate this nonsense. Level of education has absolutely no bearing on compensation. Sure there are situations that getting a more advanced degree comes with a pay raise, but there are plenty of scenarios that it does not. Just because you have a masters does not automatically require that you must be compensated higher than someone with a BS degree, or any degree for that matter (hence why we see garbage men making 100k+).
@HappyonMonday I will say though, the teachers only making like 30-40k definitely should quit. We live in a free market so if those positions don't get filled they have to raise compensation to attract workers.
You're an idiot if you think teachers only work 8 hours a day. I worked in private industry for 3 decades before teaching and I put in just as many hours in a given year teaching. My days teaching are longer and busier anf more hours are crammed into fewer months.
Please stop apologizing for wanting to be fairly compensated. Often teachers talk about their profession and include tag lines about how they didn’t get into teaching for the money, they knew what you were getting into but they love teaching the kids, and they do it because they wanted to make a difference. None of that matters when talking about pay. Wanting to be compensated for doing a necessary and very difficult job should be expected and would be in any other professional career.
I do agree with you! I just get so many angry comments. I wanted to explain some of the many misconceptions. I did know I wasn't going to make a lot of money before I became teacher. But you are right, there's nothing wrong with wanting to be compensated! ☺

@@HappyonMonday I am in MA. I have been teaching for 17 years so far so I will get some sort of pension after retirement. However, before getting into teaching I worked for many years and state and federal taxes were taken out of my paycheck. I periodically receive a statement from social security showing me what I would be receiving upon . But, I haven’t paid into social security since n started teaching 17 years ago. I was just curious if I would get my social security and my pension from teaching. Also, would I qualify for any spousal social security ?
@ The Windfall Elimination Program was signed into law on January 6, 2025! The Social Security Fairness Act eliminates the reduction of Social Security benefits while getting public pensions from work not covered by Social Security. So unless things change, it sounds like you will get both! As far as spousal social security, it depends on several things. Depending on your age when you claim, spousal benefits can range from 32.5 percent to 50 percent of your spouse's benefit. From what I understand, you qualify for spousal benefits if your spouse is already collecting retirement benefits, you have been married for at least a year, and you are at least 62 years old. I hope this helps!

I’m curious. And I know it can be hard to tell, but is it your perception that a substantial number of teachers are financially savvy? @@HappyonMondayIt always makes sense financially to work “one more year”. But for most people that one more year will be the healthiest one they have left. I come down on the side of spend that year on family and experiences, not money.
Teachers are only contracted to work 1387.5 hours per year based upon what your provided, while a full time job is contracted for 2080 hours per year. Yes teachers work overtime but so do most salaried workers on top of their 2080 hours, so just based upon that salaried workers are working more hours per year than a teacher. How much of those extra days and hours are actual work, thinking about something and planning outside of work is not work, it what everyone must do to get ahead. Also how much "make work" are teachers doing upon themselves. My wife would always create unnecessary work at home like re-arranging the furniture and so on. Setting up a classroom is a lot of unnecessary make work and does not make a student smarter. I do not think teachers are underpaid nor are they overpaid. They are not overworked anymore than anyone else. I have no praise for any of my teachers, in fact school held me back from achieving more because teachers teach to speed of the slowest kid in class constantly repeating and repeating the same subject over and over. At least when I went to school there weren't participation trophies, The average Entry Level Teacher salary in Arkansas is $58,308 where I live. That is a decent income for this state and is no where near the bottom for entry college degrees in this state. While I have never worked as a teacher, I started off at a very young age helping my father who worked as a Janitor cleaning schools, and no there weren't teachers burning the midnight oil in the classrooms. I have worked government jobs and private sector jobs and there is massive difference between the two. I made a lot more money working in the private sector but the stress level was constant, I was on call 24x7/365 and would sometimes work 20 hour days get 4 hours of sleep and do it again. Are some teachers underpaid and over worked, yes, but not the majority. Career turnover of teachers is no higher than any other profession. The fact that teachers have so much time to complain means they aren't overworked. Well since I am retired I have time to reply to this video.
If you want to be a teacher that’s fine.. but if you want to make lots of money with Lillie education get a trade. And you don’t need to pay back a college loan. My teachers told me I would be picking up garbage. Well I do work at sanitation but I’m an engineer. I made 250k a year and I’ll have a life time pension with ss and a 401k. So I want to say thanks those teachers said I wouldn’t be nothing.. make me sad to think about this.

And to be honest, one of the reasons I went into teaching is because my oldest son had a teacher that berated him when he was little. I thought, I can do so much better than that. Stop saying that you're not in this career for the money. You want to make a difference but you still need money to live. If we do things for free, the public won't respect you. Stop paying school supplies out of your pocket. You have what you have. Students can bring what you don’t have. They don't bring. We don't have. I heard a lot of comments from the public saying that teachers are crazy because they do things for free. Stop doing things that people won't respect you for.

Your son makes more because he has a STEM degree, not a really easy liberal arts degree. The teachers with low pay leaving are new hires in a 2 tier system overpaying bad teachers with seniority and over bloated administrations. See the movie "The Cartel' about education in New Jersey. The more luxury cars in the parking lot, the lower the scores for the school. You get a day off a month and three months off every summer. I had 3 weeks only after working 5 years and many times my vacation was denied because unlike teachers which are easily replaced, my job was essential for the operation of a massively profitable pharma company. I was salaried for 40 hours but never worked less than 60 hours, often 80 hours, around the clock, day or night or weekends. Teaching is the only job other than motherhood where you can claim you are good without anyone measuring your performance. My personnel review EVERY YEAR WAS A WEEK LONG AND REQUIRED INPUT FROM EVERY DEPARTMENT IN THE COMPANY.
Teachers in my state are evaluated every year. All certified teachers are required to have an evaluation. Our performance is measured every year. It’s called TPEP and it is a yearlong process. We do not get paid in the summers.
@@HappyonMonday Since I do not get paid for the additional 20-40 hours per week I work in overtime I think I have you beat there. If teachers are evaluated, how is it so few are fired? There was another movie in NY called "The Rubber Room" where teachers who either should have been fired or prosecuted go to continue being paid but do not teach. In NJ all you have to do is teach 3 years and you have tenure for life. I have had 13 jobs in 40 years as a scientist either leaving for ethics reasons or ahead of major FDA audits brought about by whistleblowing. No tenure. No security. Punished or fired for doing a job and following government laws. My job required a precision level of only 1 mistake in 1 million products. That is called six sigma. How many of your kids had perfect scores on their report cards because the standard was that you had to have everything right , every day.

The teachers Ramsey is referencing find a side-gig that pays well during the summer. That's how teachers become millionaires. Having said that, I would not advise going into teaching today. Not because of pay but because of federal government mandates to mainstream problem kids (mostly minorities and children of white woke liberals) Yes, 90% of all school shooters came from far left families without a father in the home.

not all teachers elect to have their salary dispersed into the summer. we elected for wife to only get paid during the school year. NO paycheck coming in for 2.5 month.

This info is spot on. My daughter is a teacher. She wants to change careers. TSA 'agents' at the airport make the same as teachers and the only requirement is to be 18 yrs old and have a high school diploma. They (blueberry TSA agents) get a federal pension (FERS) and have TSP (thrift savings plan). Teacher compensation in this country is sad and outrageous.

I used to be a teacher in California, pay is not bad but the stress is way too much I had to quit. I know how much work teachers do so I have much respect to those who are still in the profession. Wow, this video is outstanding and truly priceless! This is why in the early 1980's, I earned a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering ... not because of any money ... but because, I loved the field and career of engineering. Last year, I retired in my early 60's. Why? Because, I want to also enjoy the rest of my life while, I am in good health (smile...smile).

So everything we read about teachers getting large pensions is true. Most people have to work 30-40 years anyway. I hardly think sticking it out for 32 years is a huge deal.

One of my dearest colleagues became a teacher later in life, and her husband-who worked very hard himself in a manual labor job and had the common misconception that teachers had a “cush” job- soon expressed his amazement that his wife, and all the rest of us, were essentially always working (even in summer, when ostensibly on vacation”). 😂☺️

Thank you for your video. I work in education as well, and i completely agree that we work way more than the contractual hours. You named the few common reasons why we work more than 8 hours a day. However, we should also include the staff development days, parenting meetings/conferences, IEPs and SST/504 meetings, which most likely are held before or after school hours.

This is different in every state. I am 23 year veteran NYC teacher and make 137000 . If I leave now I will be able to collect 45k pension. If I make the 25 year mark it will be 70k. Also, I will be able to collect social security when I reach the age. Those that can't collect also did not pay into it.

In Texas teachers get a week vacation for Thanksgiving, two weeks at Christmas, and a week at Spring break. In addition they get 5 days sick leave and 5 days personal leave per year. True. - summer is not paid therefore yearly annual salary is lower than comparable degrees

Dave Ramsey made no disparaging comments about teachers. He only said that of the millionaires that were in his study said they were self reported to be teachers. It just proves that even with a modest or low salary invested in an IRA over 40 years will make you a millionaire. Add to that an even modest pension and Social security you should live much better in retirement than most people. Teachers that are unhappy in their carrier choice should leave immediately. Good teachers that try to do their jobs the best they can are wonderful and special.

As the parent of a soon to be 5th grader and a soon to be kindergartner, I love our teachers at our local school. We tried homeschooling during Covid and I quickly realized I’m not cut out for it 😂. Our school district has good breaks for students and teachers (the whole week at thanksgiving and spring break, as well as winter and summer breaks), but that’s a perk they deserve as far as I’m concerned. My older daughter currently says she wants to be a teacher. It offers a good salary, a good amount of time off and a good retirement plan. Even the opportunity to be a sub if you don’t want to work full time is a great thing (my mom does that in her pseudo retirement). Every job has pros and cons.

You are correct but it’s a little different where I’m at. No way I’d be a teacher, especially with the kids around me. My advice is go get a public safety fire department job. Find who has the best pension and apply. Go get your paramedic license and you will get hired almost immediately. I’ll be retired at 53 with a full pension and health insurance. Other then some mild PTSD, I’m fine 🙂✌🏼

Great job Julie! My Grandmother, Mother and Sister have all been teachers. My sister has a Masters and after 27 years, she is making $60K. Teachers seem to forget about Fall break, Christmas Break, Thanksgiving break and Spring break and Easter break. When you include all this time off, a teacher spends about 8 months a year in the classroom. Who else works 32 weeks a year and gets paid $60k with great benefits? I am jealous of my sister. I should have been a teacher!!
Thanks! We don't get a Fall break or an Easter break in my district! We get 2 days at Thanksgiving, a spring break, and Christmas break. All unpaid of course! but yes, I really enjoyed my job for a ling time!
@@HappyonMonday The local system gets 3 days for a Fall Break and Easter. They also have 4 Snow Days calculated into their schedule. If they don't use them for snow, they have 4 weeks with only 4 days of school in April and May.

My older daughter graduated as an Occupational Therapy Assistant ( a 2 year degree) and right out of the gate she got a job making more money than I was making as a RN with a 4 year degree that had 30+ experience in nursing, and despite that I was working in a specialty field.
I was so glad that my kids make more than me, but it really made me realize how underpaid I was! 🙁

I work in public education in Wisconsin and in my district teachers do not get paid during the summer. They are responsible for saving up money or planning additional work for those months. Im on an 11 month contract for my position and I still struggle every year to save enough for the month of no pay. And after being an occasional substitute in various schools I certainly do not think teachers are paid enough for the things I've seen. It blows my mind how far from reality most people's perceptions of the profession are.

I live in Wisconsin. The teachers union is terrible. The public schools and the educated cannot budget money and time. One example look up public records teachers salaries on any teacher. 75 grand for a gym teacher teaching kickball. Medical coverage is cover huge benefit and spouse for life retire at 55 and get paid till 95 40 years. on the public dole. while other professions have to budget and save. meanwhile teachers unions stick it to the taxpayer . Teachers do not get reviews. bad ones do not get fired..what an expensive mess. Time to shut down the public schools down ...always wanting more. A better idea would be to sell the expensive mess to the teachers and their unions and let them compete in the real world. Try being a nurse and not have summers off .Oh and when the union cannot take care of the guaranteed pension stick it to the tax payer again as some right outside of the market place as being some holy er than thou profession. Oh its for the children. ya right

List when you can draw from retirement (59 ½)
When to apply for property tax exemption
When to file for SS (at least 30 days ahead)
When SS will start
When to apply for Medicare (3 months before you turn 65)

In 15 states teachers do NOT get social security. They also do not pay social security taxes from what I understand. I believe those teachers get larger pensions. I live in Washington state. We do pay social security taxes and we do get SS. But we also get a smaller pension than states where they don't get SS. Teachers in Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island and Texas are not enrolled in Social Security.
@@HappyonMonday , but we are penalized if we work other jobs….like in college, summers, retirement….and pay into SS. We receive only 1/3 of our earned SS. This MAY change soon IF Biden signs the Windfall Exclusion Law. Keep in mind though that those of us who retired many years ago will never recoup what the government held back from us.

I have never been a teacher, but based on what you shared, I believe they should get ride of pensions and replace them with a 401b (similar to a 401k). Like a 401k, the 401b is very portable, meaning its in your name and no one can touch it but you. If you move jobs, you simply roll it over to your new employers 401b, 401k, or an IRA. I have never been part of a pension, but I know enough from others experiences that it is not truly your money and it relies to much on the company or government organization that you worked for to ensure they can fulfill the promises they made to you. For this reason, I told my wife to transfer her pension to an IRA.

The teachers I know here in Ohio all make at or over a 100k and they get paid all year even though they are off every single weekend and every single possible holiday and 10weeks in the summer and spring break. The pensions are very very good. Easily equivalent to having a 2 mil dollar 401k with 4% distribution. And that pension only took a contribution of 10% of their salary. Most only had to work 30-32 yrs to get that pension.
My wife is a teacher. We live close to her school. She leaves at 7 and gets home at 3. She never gets called after hrs. Never has to go in on a Saturday and gets more holidays off than I knew existed plus all the random days off for reasons I have no idea. Then there is the week off for the county fair and spring break weeks. All totalled up she only works about a half year and gets the exact same check twice a month all year long.

District I’m in, teachers get a lot of money and benefits.
Average teachers with 10 years of experience in Chicago where I live is making about close to 100k, not including benefits. Some in the wealthier Illinois suburbs are making close to 150k. CTU makes it hard to get rid of the bad teachers. In private sector, people can get fired the next day, most of the health plan are high deductibles, and no pension benefit. I get it that in certain part of the US, teachers can make about $50k or less.

In my district they take our hours worked during the school year and divide it by 12 months. So we get checks in the summer for hours worked during the school year. But yes, many teachers work second jobs in the summers to make ends meet!

Teachers get good pensions, most people get no pension. Many teachers are now two income households.
Local tenured teachers make 90-105k. They also have the best health insurance that they don't pay a dime for. They also only work roughly 195 days per year (and don't work full 8 hour days with multiple "planning periods"). They complain when they have to take work home, yet in the private sector this is common practice, on top of working longer hours. And yes they get a guaranteed pension on top of that.

To be clear that 90-105 was also before the recent inflation. It's probably 95-110 or more now.
Thanks for your comment. I personally have one 40 minute planning period that I work during grading papers and planning. I also work through my 30 minute lunch that I don't get paid for. If you watched the video to the end, I explain that pensions are NOT guaranteed. You have to work in your state system for many years to receive even a small pension. My intention was not to complain, but to clear up misconceptions.
@HappyonMonday so I think we're discussing two different things here. Pensions are guaranteed...it was put into state law in the late 90s. While, sure...you have to work like 30 years to get the full benefit - the point is, guaranteed anything is not available in the private sector. I'm not sure why teachers think they get special treatment. Anyone in the private sector will have to invest in the stock market to make any real return - and that can cut in half and guess what, there's nothing that can be done. In our state we'll just raise taxes to ensure teachers continue their pensions at full value.
On another note, it must be teachers that propagate this nonsense. Level of education has absolutely no bearing on compensation. Sure there are situations that getting a more advanced degree comes with a pay raise, but there are plenty of scenarios that it does not. Just because you have a masters does not automatically require that you must be compensated higher than someone with a BS degree, or any degree for that matter (hence why we see garbage men making 100k+).
@HappyonMonday I will say though, the teachers only making like 30-40k definitely should quit. We live in a free market so if those positions don't get filled they have to raise compensation to attract workers.
You're an idiot if you think teachers only work 8 hours a day. I worked in private industry for 3 decades before teaching and I put in just as many hours in a given year teaching. My days teaching are longer and busier anf more hours are crammed into fewer months.
Please stop apologizing for wanting to be fairly compensated. Often teachers talk about their profession and include tag lines about how they didn’t get into teaching for the money, they knew what you were getting into but they love teaching the kids, and they do it because they wanted to make a difference. None of that matters when talking about pay. Wanting to be compensated for doing a necessary and very difficult job should be expected and would be in any other professional career.

@@HappyonMonday I am in MA. I have been teaching for 17 years so far so I will get some sort of pension after retirement. However, before getting into teaching I worked for many years and state and federal taxes were taken out of my paycheck. I periodically receive a statement from social security showing me what I would be receiving upon . But, I haven’t paid into social security since n started teaching 17 years ago. I was just curious if I would get my social security and my pension from teaching. Also, would I qualify for any spousal social security ?
@ The Windfall Elimination Program was signed into law on January 6, 2025! The Social Security Fairness Act eliminates the reduction of Social Security benefits while getting public pensions from work not covered by Social Security. So unless things change, it sounds like you will get both! As far as spousal social security, it depends on several things. Depending on your age when you claim, spousal benefits can range from 32.5 percent to 50 percent of your spouse's benefit. From what I understand, you qualify for spousal benefits if your spouse is already collecting retirement benefits, you have been married for at least a year, and you are at least 62 years old. I hope this helps!

Teachers are only contracted to work 1387.5 hours per year based upon what your provided, while a full time job is contracted for 2080 hours per year. Yes teachers work overtime but so do most salaried workers on top of their 2080 hours, so just based upon that salaried workers are working more hours per year than a teacher. How much of those extra days and hours are actual work, thinking about something and planning outside of work is not work, it what everyone must do to get ahead. Also how much "make work" are teachers doing upon themselves. My wife would always create unnecessary work at home like re-arranging the furniture and so on. Setting up a classroom is a lot of unnecessary make work and does not make a student smarter. I do not think teachers are underpaid nor are they overpaid. They are not overworked anymore than anyone else. I have no praise for any of my teachers, in fact school held me back from achieving more because teachers teach to speed of the slowest kid in class constantly repeating and repeating the same subject over and over. At least when I went to school there weren't participation trophies,
The average Entry Level Teacher salary in Arkansas is $58,308 where I live. That is a decent income for this state and is no where near the bottom for entry college degrees in this state. While I have never worked as a teacher, I started off at a very young age helping my father who worked as a Janitor cleaning schools, and no there weren't teachers burning the midnight oil in the classrooms. I have worked government jobs and private sector jobs and there is massive difference between the two. I made a lot more money working in the private sector but the stress level was constant, I was on call 24x7/365 and would sometimes work 20 hour days get 4 hours of sleep and do it again. Are some teachers underpaid and over worked, yes, but not the majority. Career turnover of teachers is no higher than any other profession. The fact that teachers have so much time to complain means they aren't overworked. Well since I am retired I have time to reply to this video.

The teachers with low pay leaving are new hires in a 2 tier system overpaying bad teachers with seniority and over bloated administrations. See the movie "The Cartel' about education in New Jersey. The more luxury cars in the parking lot, the lower the scores for the school. You get a day off a month and three months off every summer. I had 3 weeks only after working 5 years and many times my vacation was denied because unlike teachers which are easily replaced, my job was essential for the operation of a massively profitable pharma company. I was salaried for 40 hours but never worked less than 60 hours, often 80 hours, around the clock, day or night or weekends. Teaching is the only job other than motherhood where you can claim you are good without anyone measuring your performance. My personnel review EVERY YEAR WAS A WEEK LONG AND REQUIRED INPUT FROM EVERY DEPARTMENT IN THE COMPANY.
Teachers in my state are evaluated every year. All certified teachers are required to have an evaluation. Our performance is measured every year. It’s called TPEP and it is a yearlong process. We do not get paid in the summers.
@@HappyonMonday Since I do not get paid for the additional 20-40 hours per week I work in overtime I think I have you beat there. If teachers are evaluated, how is it so few are fired? There was another movie in NY called "The Rubber Room" where teachers who either should have been fired or prosecuted go to continue being paid but do not teach. In NJ all you have to do is teach 3 years and you have tenure for life. I have had 13 jobs in 40 years as a scientist either leaving for ethics reasons or ahead of major FDA audits brought about by whistleblowing. No tenure. No security. Punished or fired for doing a job and following government laws. My job required a precision level of only 1 mistake in 1 million products. That is called six sigma. How many of your kids had perfect scores on their report cards because the standard was that you had to have everything right , every day.

If you are so upset with teaching, why don't you take an easier job with better pay, like bomb disposal technician, Police officer in an inner city, DEA agent in Cali Columbia, Garbage collector, Nurse, High tension electric wire technician. You have a really easy degree any moron, even Bill Cosby got. So you did not take on a hard workload in college. All of your talk about other people getting raises, again you forget that they are in STEM and their work MAKES MONEY. We as taxpayers are tired of this diatribe. Its the same script over and over. If we reversed Jefferson's law that we all pay for the public education of other people's children and made only parents pay, you would have even less.

Most careers have a 12 month work schedule. Teachers work 10.... The teachers Ramsey is referencing find a side-gig that pays well during the summer. That's how teachers become millionaires.
Having said that, I would not advise going into teaching today. Not because of pay but because of federal government mandates to mainstream problem kids (mostly minorities and children of white woke liberals) Yes, 90% of all school shooters came from far left families without a father in the home.
I was really just trying to clear up misconceptions many people have about teachers and their pensions and salaries. And yes, there are more troubled kids in school today. 😞
not all teachers elect to have their salary dispersed into the summer. we elected for wife to only get paid during the school year. NO paycheck coming in for 2.5 month.
