San francisco, Philly, Baltimore; these are teams who were already really good and then went out and got a top tier running back as a final piece. Jones or no Jones Giants weren't paying Barkley. That off season Jones wasn't the only one who got paid. Dexter Lawrence got paid and 24 hrs after Barkley signed the franchise tag the Giants gave a 107 million dollar contract to Andrew Thomas. Seems like there was plenty of money for these other positions. This was never about the Giants ability to pay Barkley it was about the Giants willingness to pay Barkley.
Barkley was a great player but the Giants were the wrong team to draft him. If they had kept him, he'd be struggling behind that o-line they currently have.
And with Barkley we’d be maybe 3-11 or 4-10 and still going nowhere. At least in Philadelphia he’s able to carry Hurts. So much for being a Giant for life.

That’s incorrect. He was only tagged once. The Giants offered him a long term deal after the 22 season and he turned it down on the advice of his agent, which he fired. He was then franchised for the 2023 season. And yes, when you play any player, you have to take their injury history into account.

The NFL, as an enterprise, should make changes to the way they compensate players. They have statistics on running backs and all of the positions. Apparently, running backs perform better in their first years and then gradually decline, but the rookie contracts are structured so the value of players goes up with experience. Rookie RBs should be allowed to negotiate deals higher than the rookie contract, knowing that they will not be offered more money later in their careers.
I respect your insight, might I suggest something different though? Brett Kollman made a video that changed my mind on that exact same idea. He pointed out that being more pricy would actually inspire teams to pay them less overall and draft them lower. He proposed instead to make adjustments to how bonuses are paid to RBs in a way that allows greater cap flexibility which was super clever imo. May want to check it out!
They just need to make rookie contracts like 2-3 years. It doesnt take 6 full seasons to find out if a player is good or not. And the franchise tag is terrible.
As far as I can tell, Saquon seems like a really humble and genuine guy. He's also a kick ass player. Management thought he would stay because he wanted to. He stood up for himself and came to us where he is valued and appreciated. Hopefully he'll stay here for the remainder of his career. Go Birds!! 🦅

The NFL, as an enterprise, should make changes to the way they compensate players. They have statistics on running backs and all of the positions. Apparently, running backs perform better in their first years and then gradually decline, but the rookie contracts are structured so the value of players goes up with experience. Rookie RBs should be allowed to negotiate deals higher than the rookie contract, knowing that they will not be offered more money later in their careers.
me thinks this would cause rookies RBs to get drafted later in the draft.
I respect your insight, might I suggest something different though? Brett Kollman made a video that changed my mind on that exact same idea. He pointed out that being more pricy would actually inspire teams to pay them less overall and draft them lower.
He proposed instead to make adjustments to how bonuses are paid to RBs in a way that allows greater cap flexibility which was super clever imo. May want to check it out!

As far as I can tell, Saquon seems like a really humble and genuine guy. He's also a kick ass player. Management thought he would stay because he wanted to.
