- St Ives' first cinema, The Picturedrome, opened on 28 June 1911. It was converted into a dance hall in 1925 and known as the PALAIS de DANSE. From 1939 it was also used for auctions, concerts and briefly during the war by a ballet school taught by Phyllis Bedells.
The 24m room with maple sprung floor was bought by Barbara Hepworth in 1961 for use as a second studio. Untouched since her death in 1975, the building was recently given to the Tate by the artist's family and will now be reimagined as a space to showcase and build on her legacy. Tate St Ives' partner for this major capital project is Adam Khan Architects adamkhan.co.uk
