Stop running. You're making your osteoarthritis worse. You don't want to get early onset osteoarthritis, that is when it moves on to a more severe grade. You don't want your future to become a living hell, trust me.

Resting before runs, doing strength work, eating oat flakes, but also getting back into a group - that's where I am at. I am doing a bit of interval training and a slow long run the weekends. Sticking to the routine helps and listening to my body. I suppose in my case it is about taking myself seriously, setting boundaries but still taking part. And finding the balance.

Rick, you are awesome!!!! I have been in your shoes and absolutely empathise with you. Prior to 2016 I was a 5 time marathoner. Not fast by any means, but loved getting out and just running. In 2016, I had a disc rupture. I ruptured my L3/4 and severed nerves in leg making me unable to walk. I had a disectomy and a Laminectomy. I was told I would never run again. I was in a wheel chair for a while and unable to walk for a long time. It took me 4 years to be able to get back into it. I started slowly back in 2020 and now I've completed a couple of half marathons. I'm not ready to get back to a marathon, but I'm hoping to work up to accomplishing this in 2023. Good work sir! Well done Rick I'm soooooo pleased for you, I'm getting back into running after 18 months off and know how hard it is getting going again. 👍

So absolutely chuffed for you, and even though not quite the time off you have had, I had 11 months off running 2020/21 due to a knee injury. Miserable though it was, all the S&C and rehab got me back to marathons, and I’ve done x4 since coming back. So whatever your goals, keep visualising those finish lines fella xxx

I'm 5.5 months into healing from my high-tibial osteotomy. You've given me hope that I'll be able to run again. Congrats!

Absolutely delighted to see Rick back. Watched the majority of this (after the bad stuff at the start) with a huge grin on my face

Okay Anna's long run video had me tearing up, but that just topped it. Couldn't be more pleased for you Rick!

😭😭😭😭 those first tentative steps running again outside after 2 years... My god, welcome back!!! Not forgetting the strenght and core work from now on, just got myself a coach after starting running one year and half ago... Progress with no pain and no injury, that's the goal! Thank you for your work., TRC!

Well done Rick. This video is so inspiring. Next time I'm being lazy and thinking I can't be bothered going for a run I'm going to remember this video and think of all the people who can't run and how happy Rick was when he was finally able to run again.

I didn't expect to get a bit emotional, but I did. I felt so much of this, having been through surgery as well after breaking both kneecaps. Every thing that Rick said was so familiar...the wondering if you'd every walk or run again, trying to do basic things for yourself but needing to rely on family, going through PT, doing the strength work...and then finally experiencing that first run, no matter how short it was. And how much it meant and what a blessing it was.
So happy for you, Rick!!! Can't wait to see you meet your next goal.
