    I just finished memorizing Colossians and I love this epistle so much more now that I can recite it. I understand it better. I always have it with me, I dream it at night, it comes to my mind all day long, whether I am inside, doing chores, or outside for a walk, anywhere. It’s there in my mind and on my lips and it makes me praise God and spontaneously pray for Him to fulfill in me what is written there. All my motivation came since I found this channel. I can’t wait to start my next book. Blessings.

      Congratulations! That is so cool. You're an inspiration to people like me who want to start memorizing Bible books and not just verses or chapters.
      Eight months later, where are you now in your scripture memory endeavors, and can you still recite Colossians from memory as well as when you first memorized it?
      Also, have you joined Josh Summers free online Bible memory community? I haven't done it yet, but it sounds like fun.

    Maybe 15 years ago I memorized the book of James in the NIV. I wish I had reviewed it more often because I no longer have it memorized other than feeling very familiar with it. I have tried to go back and re-memorize it but I don't have the same Bible I used at that time and the NIV likes to change their translations so often that it just doesn't work. I have decided to re-learn in the KJV, which never changes, and plan to make sure it stays memorized FOREVER with the tips you mention in this video. Thank you!

    Sir, thank you for this! I'm just getting started on my Bible memory journey. Like you I also want to memorize for life. I heard what the gentleman (Andy Harris?) said about kissing a book goodbye but deep down, I don't want that. I have used Anki for years now and this video just gave me the "AHA!" thought that I can use it, and it's spaced repetition, to review my books when I'm done! I'm excited about that! Thank you for making me aware of that. You have been an inspiration for me. Thank you for letting God use you.

    Amen Josh. I love all these ideas for retaining the WORD. My monthly method for review is to divide the total number of verses I have by 20. (E.g. 100 verses divided by 20 equals 5. ) So I recite 5 verses each day Monday to Friday and by the end of the month I will have reviewed all my verses. I leave 2 days free so if I get behind I have a little breathing space to catch up. But my newer verses I do once a week or once a fortnight for a while then I’ll put them into the monthly pile. Even if you have up to 2,000 verses memorised that would work out at 100 verses a day for 5 days. That could be broken down to about 33 verses morning noon and night. (Attach them to your meal times. eat/memorise these verses before you eat your meal)

      @@BibleMemoryGoal Yes, Josh. I did. I have all my verses recorded in Numbers on my iPad. When I first started memorising I’d never heard of anyone who had memorised a whole book. So I just memorised random verses, short passage and some well know chapters on small cards, so I got into a habit of keeping record of every verse. I’ve written the verses out using first letters only. It’s good for reviewing. If you forget a verses the letters just give the slightest hint so you’re still having to exercise the brain. Anyway that’s what I did and now I just add the verses I’m working on every week. When I review I keep the books and chapter together but all my random verses I’ve divided into 20 and that enables me to review them Monday to Friday and get through them once a month. (Hope This explanation doesn’t sound too confusing.) Having learned both random verses and books I find there’s a place for both styles. I think random verses, as long as they are kept in context, is a good way for someone whose new to memorising. But I really love doing books. I started with 1 John (the love book) because I felt I need more of the love of God in my heart. My second book was James. But I actually ended up doing the majority of those books side by side. Now I’m memorising Revelation and Daniel. Each week I do 4 verses of Revelation and 4 verses of Daniel. Totally loving it. I heard Tom Myer say Revelation was an easy book to learn. So far I agree.

    This was a tremendous video. Reviewing to remember for life is so important. I think of it this way. If you invested in a stock that always, without exception, went up in value each year, and at the same time paid 30% dividends, why would you ever sell it? You would hold on to it for the rest of your life and enjoy the returns. Memorizing and reviewing scripture for the long haul is the same. It only becomes more valuable each year, and pays amazing spiritual dividends! Why would you ever want to sell it (by forgetting)?
    I have used the space repitition concept over the past few years and now have 6 books memorized, with good recall. Thanks again for this good explanation. of the learning curve.

    I'm realizing that my lack of a review process that I really trust is a little discouraging.
    Just memorized Matthew 1, however, I keep thinking about the long-term. How much time will it take to review all of the chapters for books that I learned.
    For example, if I learn all 28 chapters of Matthew, what routine should I have in place to review which chapter and when, along with learning something new.
    For some reason, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this.
    I know that without trusting the process, i'll subconsciously hold myself back. Mainly because I don't want to waste my time.

    • @BibleMemoryGoal
      @BibleMemoryGoal  3 роки тому +2

      I know what you mean, Dulcet! To be fair, there is a line of thinking among some that you shouldn’t concern yourself with being able to recite the whole book word for word, that as long as you have it in your mind, the Holy Spirit can draw out what He needs. Don’t put undue stress on yourself or let’s this stop you from memorizing more!
      However, I do think that if you set a process for yourself, it might relieve some of the pressure that’s keeping you from memorizing more.
      For example, perhaps you can review a chapter a week out loud, and listen to 5 chapters once every weekend. Or maybe you just take a couple hours once a month to go over it all once, or half at a time. Whatever works for you.
      I have another interview coming up with another memory guy that I think you’ll like and may offer some other ideas. Stay tuned and make sure to watch for that one.

    I sent you a message through your website. I’d love to hear back from you. I’ve had great success rote memorizing. But now that I’m trying to use a memory palace, I’m finding my recitation of passages choppy as I think through my story, instead of fast and automatic with rote learning.

    • @BibleMemoryGoal
      @BibleMemoryGoal  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the comment! Let me be clear: if rote memory works well for you, keep at it! No need to force a different method if it’s not working for you.
      For me, the memory palace story does two things: first, it allows me to organize what I’m memorizing so I can find it easier. Second, it gives me the opportunity to do rote memory without having the text in front of me.
      So yes, I’m choppy as I recite my verses as well, but it gets better as I repeat it. Once I have it down, the story acts as a quick jolt to the memory and I let rote memory take over from there. Make sense?

    • @churchhymnsandpsalms
      @churchhymnsandpsalms 3 роки тому +3

      @@BibleMemoryGoal yes, that makes sense. I feel I need the memory palace because I could never pick out a single verse from rote memorizing. A chapter with rote is like a story for me: I have to start at the beginning and recite through the end. That’s what I’m hoping a palace and difference verse stories will help with. I’m on Philemon 5 today. It’s very choppy, but for the first time I can pick out any of the 5 verses and recite them with my memory palace story for that verse.

    Hey Josh, quick question for you should you happen to see this post.
    What do you think about the 'first letter of every word' memory technique, where you write, from memory, an entire chapter of the Bible, or section of a chapter, simply by writing out the first letter of that chapter as you are saying the words out loud? It's kind of like what the Bible Memory Man does, except that is doesn't take as long since you are only writing out the first _letter_ of every word, rather than the actual word itself.
    Personally, I find it a helpful way to memorize scripture, but I was just wondering if you've ever used this method and if so, what are your thoughts on it? Thanks.
