Tales from Scotlands History, heroes from Scottish history, john paul jones history
Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As one of Scotland history tour guides people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation of your from the US. So from April 2020 I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.
Here are three ways you can help me make more video productions. Just click the link www.scotlandhistorytours.co.uk/support
I'm going with a true scotsman dodging and weaving and thinking on his feet loyal to friends and unyielding to enemies but like so many others had to leave his homeland to fulfil his potential history is seldom written first hand

Coffee sent, with thanks.
I'm half Scotch Irish and half Mexican...I can drink and fight but I'm not good at either one!
Hey have you thought about doing a video on hugh mercer another Scottish revolutionary hero 😊🏴
One of my favorite Patriots!!!
As Oversimplified put it. John Paul Jones is handsome, Scottish and absolutely insane.
This is how I heard about John Paul Jones, oversimplified
Sir, I remembered a line talking about John Paul Jones in a humorous video that I had watched and was hunting UA-cam to find it again and you have provided me the answer I was seeking.
Thank you!
The James Bond of the seas
Also plays mean bass guitar!
A true American
*" I want a Fast Ship. And I plan to take it in Harms Way. " --------- John Paul Jones*
Fuck yeah! USA USA USA!
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Actually, he said "I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast; for I intend to go in harm's way." That's one of the two quotes of his engraved on the U.S. Navy memorial in Washington, D.C. The other of course is "I have not yet begun to fight." There are other quotations from naval commanders on that memorial, but Jones is the only one with two. Which is the way it should be. Over his career altogether he went 40 - 0. He was an excellent warrior, but he was a superb mariner. Read about his command of the Ariel on 10/07/1780. He saved many lives in addition to his own. Only John Paul Jones could have done what he did. Lionheart.
He was a bad-ass physically, too. Although he was only 5' 7" and 135 lbs., he was nothing but whup-ass in a fight. One of his first mates once said about him "I've never seen a man with hands as fast as [John Paul Jones]."
I have not yet begun to fight!...Battle between USS Bon Homme Richard and HMS Serapis.
Another very interesting topic and a great vid !
Going with patriot with a pirate heart! If only every history lesson was taught like this...
For giggles, the John Paul Jones the base player for Zeppelin who becomes a reference in this JPJ story is actually John Richard Baldwin, who fell in for the the romance of John Paul Jones, and hence the JPJ stage name.
Bass, the instrument is a bass. Good player, but John Entwistle is the top man in that league.
Needs a Film!!
True
Can’t believe I missed this first time round quality show Bruce fella
Thank you.
As a yank, I have always been fascinated by John Paul Jones. I loved learning about his crazy antics during the revolutionary war!
Quite right too
Lol yank. Only Europeans call us that. I've never understood why considering in the states we think of yanks or Yankees as well, baseball, but also northerns to the southerns. But yeah, I feel u girl, same. The entire us revolutionary war is some of my all time favorite history. The balls. I think it's why we americans love our flag so much and why ppl elsewhere dont get it. If they knew this one war it would begin to make sense.
Plus we beat the brits a second fucking time in the war of 1812.
@@meghanschuler4739 There's a certain hierarchy to the word "Yankee":
-To a European, a "Yankee" is an American
-To an American southerner, a "Yankee" is a northerner
-To a northerner, a "Yankee" is a New Englander
-To a New Englander, a "Yankee" is a Vermonter
-To a Vermonter, a "Yankee" is a Vermonter who still eats pie for breakfast.😉
@@meghanschuler4739 hmmm not not so sure about that. Two days after the peace treaty, James Madison did claim that the war was successful for the USA, and indeed many people in USA on all sides did agree with that view, and indeed some American historians as well. At best it was a draw.
While it was true that militarily it may have been a draw, the war aims of the USA were not achieved.
The United States went to war in 1812 to force the British to give up impressment and to seize Canada. The United States failed to conquer Canada, and in the subsequent peace treaty the naval issues and impressment of USA citizens wasn’t even mentioned.
thanks for another surprising and enlightening video
Sometimes Bruce has tidbits of history that you definitely dont learn in school. Thank you. Bruce.
You are very welcome
Pirate, patriot, I think it's irrelevant. He took the fight to the Brits! I am grateful for the part he played in securing our independence, and thrilled the part was played by a Scotsman!
He was British and so were the people in the 13 colonies. By the way it was George of Hannover and assorted german mercenaries that gave the British a bad name.
@@armstronggermany2995 As British as one has to be, being born in territories occupied by the British empire. The last thing the German auxiliaries were, were mercenaries. The British empire gave themselves a bad name by enforcing unwanted legislation upon the colonists, many of whom were either not British at all, or came there to flee direct British authority, others still, who had descended from the poor souls sent over in chains as "punishment" in Britain's ever increasing police state. But that's another topic entirely.
@tam james The British outlawing slavery and offering enslaved people their freedom is a beginner fact. The topic of the British being the good guys can be taken several steps farther, and even goes back several decades before it came to war. It's all about perspective with this conflict. To my Welsh, Scottish and Irish ancestors, I'm sure they were happy to stick it to the colonizers, albeit ironically. Several of them were never British and easily accepted the idea of home rule. To my indigenous ancestors, they were happy that the British were finally starting to not act like homicidal pieces of shit and willing to actually stop the colonists from being mad dogs who stole their land and killed their people. I have ancestors who fought on both sides. My patriots were mostly Germans, Welsh and Ulster-Scots while my Loyalists were mixed bloods who knew the British were their best bet in reigning in the land-hungry colonists.
@tam james Also, I hope you know that I wasn't referencing slavery when I spoke about people being brought here in chains. That was about the era of the middle colonies relying on penal labor before the rise of African slavery. Elites living on both sides of the Atlantic were made richer than God by this system. Eventually the British thought it was wrong to enslave white Christian men, and tried to put an end to this system (while the North American colonies tried to resist). It would take another couple generations before they saw it was wrong to enslave anyone, regardless of skin colour and religion (and yet again, the colonials resisted). The colonials even capitalized like a son of bitch on what we, in German American circles, call Redemptioners. You can actually trace the Saint Andrews and the German Society of Pennsylvania back to Scots and Germans trying to protect their own from the predatory oligarchs of North America.
Fascinating. 😊
I knew you would have to make the John Paul Jones bass player joke. I was not disappointed. Your clips are great. You have a natural story teller ability, with a bit of cool teacher thrown in for good measure.
Thank you kindly!
I'm an American amature historian. I love history. I never knew that about John Paul Jones. Thank you ever so much for revealing this history
You're welcome
Love your videos
Hey Bruce! I've been managing the JPJ House in America for years and love sharing the story of our naval hero. Thank you for putting fun into the story of John Paul. Would love to come visit and jump on your history tour. Cheers to John Paul Jones.
My town in New Hampshire has a museum called the John Paul Jones House, a tourist draw even though he only is thought to have boarded there off and on for a couple years in the 1770s & early 1780s.
I’m form Whitehaven. Im enjoying making my way through your videos.
Guid lad
What a story! Never knew all this
Every day's a school day
Awesome guy😂😂 outstanding videos auld boy.
Glad you enjoyed
Coming from Whitehaven, although he was born in Kircudbright, we always thought of John Paul Jones as being one of our own.
And why not?
Patriot! I've visited his tomb at Annapolis. It is truly magnificent and well deserved.
Good vid, TY
You're welcome
So many dynamic, eccentric, and adventurous Scottish figures. Explains a lot about my family. My great grandfather was a Cutler who would disappear from the dinner table mid conversation and return a year or three later and try to resume the conversation he walked out on. We ended up finding out much later he had an entire host of strange mechanical patents and had made some bespoke pearl pocketknives for nobility in the UK. My great uncle developed one of the earliest electrified chicken coups which, allegedly, tricked the chickens into thinking there were 8 days in a week. Not sure if that's true, but he did manufacture his own batteries and electric motors before electrification was widespread. My grandfather during the depression used to hustle people in shotgun competitions, train famous hunting dogs, and run sugar through the woods for bootleggers. I'd love to visit my relatives in Scotland soon. Thanks Bruce
My great grandmother told me as a child that John Paul was a relative. I have loved learning his story.
Love your presentation skills, man! Insta-sub.
Yay
Patriot! The maddest lad of the American navy until Stephen Decatur came along.
Also, the craziest Scottish sea captain until Thomas Cochrane came along.
Yay, Decatur!
A man who knows his history!
Excellent
I thank you
I’m here from the shanty. Very catchy tune and what an interesting fellow
As "Father of the American Navy", the Scotsman established US Navy traditions of excellence in war, tactics, seamanship... and winning against impossible odds. JPJ raided ashore England twice, JPJ captured over 20 English ships, including capture of HMS Serapis after 3.5hrs and 300 deaths fighting from the sinking USS Bonhomme Richard - the only instance of a victory of the sinking ship in the Age of Sail. Patriot Stud.
Just discovered your videos Bruce and liking them very much - my ancestor James b1746 was registered as ‘a trader in Trinidad & Tobago’ - oh dear! Anyway loving your work
Welcome on board
Buccaneer patriot and pirateer.loved American !!!
Patriot! American AND Scottish Hero! And proudly entombed in the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis, Maryland. JPJ was one of those characters in History who was just meant to be at the right place at the right time. Audacious. Getterdun.
I wasn't aware it took so blasted long to lay him to rest but I'm grateful for the Hero's entourage and welcome. THANK YOU, BRUCE. Wow. You make me so proud of my own heritage.
If I recall correctly it took so long to get him properly laid to rest because no one knew where he was. The land he was buried on was owned by the royal family who sold it a few years later.
Such a great presentation! We enjoyed this very much. I agree with Julie: patriot with a pirate heart! Well said!
Pirate?.The raid at Whitehaven was the first SEAL team mission.
Ok I got to say that's one of my fav shirts so far.
😜
I am a US Navy Veteran and know all about John Paul Jones. He is famous for breaking out his Base while attacking British Ships. Then he would play “ No Quarter” as a fear tactic.
this is fantastic. A patriotic pirate, for sure!
This is FAB!
Sailors drink beer. When they’re supposed to be working. What a surprise
Aye, it came as a shock to me
Good to hear you referring to Kirkcudbrightshire, not the leaden 'Dumfries and Galloway'
I smile a little bit on the inside every time I hear your “right? Well, apparently not.” Thanks for your contribution, absolutely lovely video.
Patriot, and a Jacobite.
The name change thing worked back then. My family became Foster, and dropped the Forrester name.
Come visit Portsmouth, NH you can see his house!
Patriot! Have another episode on Jones!!
He may come round again
He had a house in Portsmouth NH around the corner from Flat . I walk by it on my way to rugby practice .
Brilliant! I always learn so much from you Bruce. And your Jokes, scotticisms and style are so easy to listen to. Thanks for entertaining and informing us - and keep going!
My pleasure!
This guy needs his own program. His passion and enthusiasm is great.
Patriot. Loved this: your videos are really informative and entertaining. Very many thanks.
Much appreciated
Pirate. Thank you for this enlightening video; I didn't know much about his past before he turned up in the American navy.
Hero and Patriot.
That's TWO WORDS! You were only given one😜
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Sorry, much like John Paul, I've never been very good at doing what I'm told.
Patriot and hero! Great to hear about a Scotsman giving the british government so much hassle👍
Patriot!!!🏴🇺🇲!!!
Patriot who had no idea what democracy was but he brought his fight towards the British to America. Cheers to JPJ!
What I love about this storey, is fact each year a US warship visits Whitehaven and a friendship ceremony is held. History is amazing, its just a shame so many people use it so so division and hatred, when none is needed
What? People have hatred today from way back then?
yes.
Patriot, with a pirate heart!
Would you be open too giving a talk during a Sons of the American Revolution meeting? I think they would love topics like this and your amazing passion and style of presenting history
Hey George. I'm pretty sure they would find me wanting. I know a little about a lot and am not really an expert on anything. I'm certainly not an expert on the American rebellion 😜 See what I did there😂
Haha well you know more then most who write our history books. Not to mention a broad Eurpean/Scottish/UK perspective on the topic may be facinating.
You might recognise Kirkcudbright Tollbooth from scenes in The Wicker Man.
He may have been a pirate, but he was OUR pirate. And a naval hero.
I always love listening to Bruce. He gets me in trouble
😂 It wisnae me
John Paul Jones and Thomas Cochranes sea prowess nature are so much alike!
ua-cam.com/video/64CUG-XXlX0/v-deo.html
Was that Castle Maclellan behind you in the video?
Indeed
Hands down becoming my favorite UA-cam channel. One day when I can afford to jump across the pond, we going to have to get a beer
Yay!
I agree :)
I don't know about the rest of my fellow Americans, but I think we missed the opportunity to name our country Naughty Nascent Nation. Oh, and pirate hero. For John.
😂
I have not yet begun to fight.
Aye, he was a Jock right enough
My father who grew up in Glasgow. Got a P.h.D in History loved John Paul Johns. I inherited two books on John Paul Jones. One is hard to read because of the nautical details. Bill Collins
this shirt is so very cheery and rasta
All together now...She was a stately Southerner, who flew the stars and bars...
I enjoyed that!
one story i heard was he tried to take Scotland by sailing up the Firth of Forth to Leith but turned back when a strong weather wind turned against him at the approach to the Firth. It was said a Kirkcaldy minister aware of JPJs intentions had prayed the previous day for the weather to turn inclement against JPJ and was known thereafter as the minister who saved Scotland !
I mean, I guess it worked…
Patriot, Mad Scotsman, and father of the US Navy. While his achievements are not as glamorous as say Admiral Nelson, he's still seen as a pivotal person in American history.
Aye that’s the intriguing question. What if they'd swapped places? Sounds like a rap battle
A wee bit o baith ( many years ago visited kirkbean & at one time there was/ is a pub in Dunoon named the Paul jones.
Probably right. I don't know about the pub
He liked to stick it to authority so he gets my vote for pirate and rogue what a great combination
Madlad gets mad at everyone, gets everyone mad at him.
100% Patriot. I have not yet begun to fight.
My Greatgrandmother was a daughter of the Revolutionary War. that She was related to JPJ. He is interned at Naval Academy Annapolis Maryland..under 24 hr Marine honor guard.
Apparently four Brothers married four Sisters who were Jones.
Loving these, and still sharing.
Saor Alba 2021.
Thanks for the great history Bruce. The sarcophagus of John Paul Jones in the Naval Academy Chapel is one of the fanciest in the US. One of the attractions in Fredericksburg Virginia is a tinsmith shop in a building which JPJ rented for awhile. Also in Fredericksburg is Hugh Mercer's Apothecary which he owned before his fame in the rebellion.
Maybe one day I'll come and make a video about it😎
Also the ceiling of the naval academy chapel is painted to resemble the night sky when he took the Serapis.
@@nikkolettguyer4913 That's cool! I'll check that out next time I'm in Annapolis. Thanks.

As an American I never knew this. Quite fascinating to learn about a Scotsman who became a hero in the US Navy. To the Brits he was a pirate, but to Americans JPJ is a HERO.
Have you seen this one? ua-cam.com/video/yPanDYEoYhA/v-deo.html
I'm a proud descendant of Ulster & Highland Scots. William Lawson was only 15 whilst he fought with his father in Culloden, because of his young age, the English Government didn't want to hang him for treason. He became a guest in an English Prison in Northumberland Area. Apparently, these prisoners were too expensive to be continually housed & feed in an English prison. So he was sent to The American Colonies. He was sold for a good sum of tobacco to a plantation owner in VA. He was an extremely ornery & obnoxious to his masters. After only a year, he ran away from his masters. However, because he was such a rebel & undesirable, his masters never bothered to capture him & return him to serve out his remaining indentured term. So there was a method to his maddness. He took up residence with his clan mates in North Carolina. He married, had 11 children, prospered & enjoyed his new freedom. He actually faced The British on the battlefield again, as an American Patriot. He fought at King's Mountain, Cowpens, & Yorktown. He survived & enjoyed a long happy life. His tombstone is in Scot County, WV, & it is titled "The Scottish Rebel" William & Rebecca Lawson.
Commented for the algorithm.
Well done that man
mate how the hell ain't ye owning a following above a million?
Rome wasn't built in a day. Over 3000 since April. If you spread the word I'll get that million😁
Very interesting video. JPJ was a patriot, a crazy BALLSY patriot like never before. Might consider him a pirate for his "manners" or his ways, still he fought with the heart of a lion. Respect.
@ Michele Porcu -- like they say, one man's pirate is another man's freedom fighter. 😉
He went to fight for Russia, hardly patriotic, more like an opportunist.
@@nlwilson4892 well what was he supposed to do in America? They literally dissolved the continental navy due to a lack of need and funds
@@watermelonjuice8524 There was a new country that was just forming, plenty of opportunities for people. If he was really invested in the future of the country then he should have went there and found a part to play. He should have been able to find work as a ship's captain and trade was important, or perhaps a job in charge of a major port. What the OP describes as "crazy ballsy" could equally be described as reckless with a lust for violence. The Lord Selkirk he intended to kidnap was actually on the side of America, Whitehaven was a civilian port with no naval vessels, the objective was to burn the port to the ground to disrupt the coal trade.
@@nlwilson4892 true, just one point you got wrong is that after he stole the earl of Selkirk’s silverware, he spent the next few years hunting down each piece of us and giving it back. He was very remorseful about that entire event.
He is my hero
No mention of ARBIGLAND ESTATE could we find when we visited Annapolis in the 80s. Very disappointing as we lived( early 60s) in the cottage of the house on the shore on the estate and went to school in Cargenbridge. Bicycled to Kirkbean to catch the first bus to New Abbey and change over to the second bus after having played rounders in New Abbey while we waited. Only one R in Arbigland.
I loved his work with Led Zeppelin. A real multitalented musician, for sure.
Wow
Indeed
John Paul Jones had true American spirit.
...but he was Scottish 😜
Regarding the Earl of Selkirk's silver: I was brought up in Kirkcudbright and remember some time around the late 70s, a friend who was a member of the local Sea Scouts telling me that they had written to the American navy asking for the return of the silver. They got a reply saying it had already been returned. Oh, and he was a pirate. 😁
Patriot, pirate and proudly Scottish
😂Aye, maybe
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Granted in a Post Colluden world like his being Scottish might not have been the same symbol of pride it is today
As an American Navy veteran, I'll admit that yeah, JPJ was a pirate... But he's OUR pirate, damn it!
😂
Yes.....Both.
Both!
Hero - The Winner ALWAYS writes history.
Patriotic Pirate. Our Francis Drake. Also an ancestor according to my family lore, despite never marrying. ;)
