I just wanted to see Iorek rip off the lower part of Iofur's jaw, like in the book, and in the movie...
It would have been cool, I still loved the way this was done and he probably did in the blurred shot (there is a bit of a crack or something). Whilst some inaccuracies in the adaptation have annoyed, I thought this episode was quite close to the book; I was very happy when they made the guy in will's home fall over the cat, great detail.
@@rafi3341 That's the money shot of the duel. Say what you want about the movie, but at least they got that part right. Another thing this duel doesn't do right is the fact that Iorek doesn't trick Iofur, which to be fair the movie doesn't do either.
What.. the.. heck..
@AlwaysThere The reason why Iorek kills Iofur off-screen behind Lyra, because it will be to horror and blood thirsty.
@@timovangalen1589 he does in the movie, they just don't spell it out. But if you pay attention he fakes his paw being hurt and then uses this paw to kill Ragnar
Aside from the lack of jaw swiping and armour, my other problem with this scene is the fact that the other bears are all just wearing armour. In the book, Iofur forced the bears in his court to wear ridiculous human-like outfits that they immediately tear off after he dies. It's a small thing that really drives home the theme that Iofur led the bears astray, and that Iorek is their rightful king. Having them all just wear their armour robs the duel of meaning, and makes it seem like it didn't make a difference who was king.
Honestly a good 90% of this tv shows problems was the budget
Lofur wanted to be baptised
The book explanation makes more sense then what happened in the show. After the battle all the bears changed armour to show their loyalty to Lorek, but that contradicts the fact that their armour is irreplaceable
that makes sense, but the same still happens in this show too
@@TheBlackestKey small budget films tend to be the best :)
Sadly, this adaptation of the fight wasn't jaw dropping...
lmao
Oh.😂
I can't say no to a good pun.
ffs lol
come on, all in all this is a much better adaptation then the old movie
One kinda misses Ian Mckellen's "that is all!" Triumphant moment
@@UNREAL8745 no, Mckellen
In the 1st movie
@@my2randomcents How tf did I miss that… For some reason I though you were talking about the other bear😅 I’ll take my L
“No polar bears were harmed in the production of this scene”
Imagine having armored bears and having them fight without armor
Is.....that....ALL?!
Slices his jaw off
Breaks his neck with jaws
Gets his heart eaten
"yes, that is all"
Prwxcuio.
It may not be the best adaptation, but it is really good bear fight. And the cgi is just brilliant.
For sure!
What you on about this is 10x better than the film
@@theotheseaeaglethis fight scene was done better in the movie, but everything else is better in the show
I actually like this version of Iofur, his voice fits his personality perfectly, brutal, serious and evil. He never bullshits or takes things lightly, he's ready for anything. And when he said, "Ready me for BATTLE!!" I got chills.
I prefer Iorek Byrnisson's original voice in the 2007 movie version because his voice was clear and deeper
@@samc.o.3684 I think both Iorek Byrnissons are equally good in terms of voice, Ian Mekllon sounds booming and loud like a bear, and the other man sounds rough and scary like a bear.
I like the king of the polar bears voice more in the movie than in the series
@@canonbehenna612 Yeah. To be fair, Iofur's voice in the movie is more accurate to how the book described his voice.
Sounds like just a typical bully and a stereotypical villain. That type of voice can work but its overdone when the VA clearly tries to hard and just makes it sound bubbly.
I think I know why Iorek won this fight. He was more determined and knew how to fight like a bear. Sure Iofur did give him a pounding, but he underestimated him, was more concerned with his status and prestige amongst the other bears than he was about beating his opponent. He got careless, has probably been complacent over the years and not had to fight anyone since he took the throne. He behaved more like a human in a bear skin than an actual bear, Iorek saw his chance and grabbed him. That's why he won.
0:23 1. The two Polar bears fight against each other without wearing their armors.
2:16 2. Iofur's demise (off-screen behind Lyra)
I love those bears voices 😍 So deep and cool
I love the bears voices to
I can understand why they cut out the jaw-smashing scene, but I found this fight really disappointing.
One of the few things which the movie did better than the TV series.
I also thought Iorek was underused in the Bolvangar rescue scene. It's a shame to see such a great character short-changed
In my humble opinion, it's probably because of the budget
Big difference, as the lower jaw was ripped off. Also, in the book they were wearing armors.
Even if it’s not exactly like the books, the series as whole is more book accurate than the film version
That sickening scream at the end from Lorek is enough for to us to know what happened.
That was Iofur, not Iorek.
Not enough.
It's not enough when the rating of this show should've allowed them to show it. Why shy away from it?
Lorek was the main character
@@marshallwayne-uf4pq I knew the comment would come back to haunt me 😂 I remember realising I got the names mixed up but sort of said "screw it no one will notice" but here you are 😂
My biggest issue was they weren't wearing armour so it was hard to tell who was who and the fight wasn't as good as in the golden compass movie. Still enjoyable though.
This series is so good. Ruth Wilson is brilliant. In fact the whole cast is great.
You can’t be serious
Where’s their armor and the jaw drop and the intricate fight scene. What?!
It’s not that big of a deal lol. The series as a whole is more accurate to the book than the film that’s what matters
Iorek: entire speech about how important his armor is
Also Iorek: didn’t fight with it.
This was plain disappointing, however many times people dump on the movie they definitely got the dæmons, how important they are and this fight right
Yesss,...in first movie from the golden compass there is no blood in this duel,....this is make the his dark material more realistic and good of all
Imagine if they remade The Phantom Menace, and it was really good, but they cut out the ending of Duel of the Fates and instead, the camera focuses on Anakin putting his hands over his ears after seeing the death of Qui-Gon, and Obi-Wan defeats Darth Maul off-screen.
Funny you mentioned that because Iofur was voiced by Peter Serafinowicz. The same actor who did Darth Maul's voice from The Phantom Menace.
"Brutal", lol, even the movie version of the fight was better than this
Same.
@@vixanspectre and how about the movie version CGI? :)
Never mention the movie again.
They actually fought like bears
Eh, that depend. Sure, this one lacks the "gore" as in the film and anything, but it's still a lot more brutal in a way since it's much more grounded to rl bear fight in so many ways and it's paired with the brilliant close-up shots which further elevate the intensity very well. I'd rather prefer the more intense, realistic CG fight in this one over that "pre-rendered game cutscenes" fight in the film version.. and honestly that silly bitchslap scenes only make it even less brutal for me lol
The film wasn’t very good but the fight still gives me goosebumps to this day. This is disappointing
the fight in this show is so bad, but everything else makes up for it
@@gamerstheater1187 Bad only for book readers, I didn't know anything about the books and for me this was still quite a good battle
@@glowy_subject3050 what no I mean the action in the show is bad, it's slow, bland, and ends on a randomly
@@glowy_subject3050 all you had to do was watch the movie and you would understand why it’s so bad
@@glowy_subject3050 you probably didn't watch the movie either 🤣🤣🤣🤣
For all you people saying the fight in the movie was longer... literally the only time difference is 14 seconds
The fight is more… uhh bear like. But the movie fight was a lot more exciting. Still thought this looks incredible.
“ We do bear ways, not human “
Other than the lack of development with the human/daemon relationships, this also felt like kind of a rushed let down. The family friendly 2007 movie felt like it had the daemon development, and didn't shy away from showing Iofur's brutal death. For some reason this adaption did, despite being shown on the TV an hour later than usual. This adaption really felt like it focused development on the human connections, which is fine, but a lot of it feels missed out. Some stuff with Will just felt like filler when really they could have put development between Lyra and Pan, or Lyra are Iorek in those moments.I still like the adaption, but it just lacks in a lot of areas. Hopefully the ending next week isn't butchered.
Another minor but significant detail they missed is that when Lyra first sees Iofur in the book, he's holding a doll that resembles Ms. Coulter, showing how desperate he is for a daemon.
What do you think of Lee in the show
It was only moved forward an hour due to scheduling conflicts, it was always intended to be pre-watershed and thus couldn't show graphic violence.
@@rumaysa9649 His accent was too forced and sounded comedic, Lin tried WAAAY too hard. I definitely preferred the 2007 version, at least in that one Hester didn’t disappear into the background
At least we have both versions now that both have different things to offer
I feel like BBC corporate is largely to blame for the neutering of this scene. The rest of the show doesn't really pull punches, and we all know HBO has no problem with gratuitous violence, but the BBC Editorial Guidelines specifically mentions "unusual or sadistic methods of inflicting pain, injury or death" as having to be taken under serious consideration for broadcast, which I think may have poo-poo'ed the whole "jaw-dropping" climax to this fight.
I would say maybe it would have been better with armor on but this makes more sense and I also think it break his jaw clean off would have more exciting as well
0:18 as disappointing ad the whole thing was, I appreciate the fact that they kept Iofur's name.
Iorek and Iofur should've warn their armors to fight against themselves like they did in the 2007 movie, also Iorek should've wacked his jaw off too.
However in this TV series, the two king Polar bears fight over armor-less, and Iorek defeats Iofur off-screen behind Lyra, so it wasn't to horror and gory for viewers.
Smaller budget. Can't blame them for less CGI. Did a great job with what they had.
Movie name?
@@envygotboard4107 this is a tv series called His Dark Materials on HBOMAX.
Damn, iofur voice is badddassss
If there aren’t any dismembered jaws, I’m not interested
These gentle loving creatures need to be protected! Hopefully someday there will be a sanctuary for these bears
But these are not real bears they are CGI
Damn where's the slicing jaw scene? That part was what makes the fight between Lorek & Lofur iconic :'v
I know right
So close...it’s unfortunate that the ratings hindered such an artistically complex piece. I know they worked hard to pull this together. An intense fight that was rendered vapid because of that missing catharsis.
I wanted to see Iorek fake his paw injury
just reminds me of 2 drunk uncles going at it
See Lion King, that's how you make animal look realistic AND expressive !
In the book, he ate his heart
that's terrible!!😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Not at the same level of the movie, but amazing battle
Honestly like how they made the Bears fight each other without their armor. but I wanted to see a little bit more like iorek Rip's Lofur jaw off.
They're fighting without armor?
"YES!..... THAT IS ALLL!" Will always be one of the coolest things I've seen as a kid, sad they didn't add it here
These two could whoop tiger's ass like It's nothing
Yo this show looks cool
As! I’m gonna start watching!!
Not a good Idea to watch the serie after watching the whole bear fight lol
I wish they would’ve made a second movie with the same actors :(
why would need a movie if we already have a damn good tv series with the same quality?
90% of these comments will be about how they prefer the original fight from the film.
Ahh it reminds me of typical bear antics in West Hollywood at the weekend evenings before COVID....
1:20 HE NEEDS CPR!!!!!!!!!😂
One of my favorite movies EVER!! YES!!
This is a tv show, not a movie.
In terms of book-fidelity: movie
In terms of cgi and physics: series
Not the best fight scene but still the best show ever.
I prefer the 2007 movie version where the outside fight scene takes place and Iorek and Iofur/Ragnar fighting over to be king while wearing their armors to protect their skin. Iorek wacking Ragnar's jaw off wasn't to blood thirsty, that was my best. Blood shouldn't be shown on-screen outside the bear's cave in the the BBC TV version as Iofur's demise was played behind Lyra off-screen so it wasn't to blood thirsty for viewers.
There are better series
What’s an armored bear without his armor?
The series may be better than the movie overall, but I can’t believe they shot/edited tis, stepped back, and said “I think that’s it,” especially when the fight in the film version is out there for comparison.
ohh come on even the Movie showed Iorek punching his jaw off.
Lyra should move aside so that we can see the fight.
I know right
At least Golden Compass showed Iofur's death. And it was triumphant.
Overall, the show is better than the movie.
But the movie’s fight between Iorek and Ragnar/Iofur is WAY better than the show’s.
Mainly because they don’t shy away from showing how Iorek kills Ragnar/Iofur
facts bruh
Thaddeus look out get out of the giant polar bear fight
The Cave Bear.
This absolutely sucked compared to the movie/book. And it makes no sense, the show was doing amazing up until then
They went for a more realistic approach to the fight.
@@AKGHOSTzl1 That's not usually the best idea when you're dealing with a fantasy world lol. So much was wrong in this fight compared to the book or movie.
Why were they without armour? It makes no sense
I think it's because it's supposed to be a fight to the death, but seeing them wearing armor would have been cool.
@@leah-marie5031 in the book they fight with the armour, and it's because they never go anywhere without it. It's supposed to be a part of their soul, I think they also say that in the show
@@amybananana I know and I agree that they should be wearing it
Like black panther.
I assume it was done for budgetary reasons. Probably cheaper to animate without armour.
They're ARMOURED BEARS, not polar bears!!
Same thing 😭
Yes that is all that is all bears who is your king
This fight is awesome
lofurs had a huge advantage at the starting but lorek kicked lofurs ass at the end and I'm surprised that he is much smaller than the bigger one size sometimes does not matter it's strength and smarts
HM. I was waiting for his feint with the hurt arm from the books, but OK.
Overall, I kinda feel this show generally suffers from having not enough of a budget to do the book real justice. There is hardly any Daemons or in this case bears around, which ends up with a world that feels kinda empty
dont know what you expect from a BBC tv series - it isnt HBO or Netflix with the mega budgets they have. The world and the effects look mighty fine to me, but that is just my opinion of course
@@Powerslave62 actually it's literally on HBO :P
They paid for the exlusive rights and produced it together with BBC
Agreed its so good but the little things pull me out of it
I was waiting so bad to see Iorek knock his jaw off but nope. They did it off screen
Same but its still a better adaptation than the golden compass like by introducing will eariler for example. Would have also liked to see them submit to iorek too but hey ho
Say what you will about the film, it at least did this fight better.
You see The Golden compass and his dark materials are both part of the same fantasy books
Aww, we did not see Iofur getting Ju-On-ed.
Damn BBC and their stupid PG-13 crap.
Seeing the false king die is one of the best bits in the books and the film, to barely see anything and have it all blurred out and hidden is such a disappointment and so ridiculous. It was such a show of power and strength, and it finally shut the false king up. Literally the best part of the fight and we see nothing.
In the books Iorek kills Iofur like how his is and eats his heart
Bear stud.
where is the blood(realism), where is that epic moment when Iorek whips Iofur's Jaw off and most important where are their armors.
I don’t mind this fight, and I don’t mind the fight in the movie, but neither really capture what I’m looking for in this battle. If only we could take the best parts from both and merge them together.
From the Movie: The bears in their armour (like, Jesus it’s in their bloody name! It’s their soul! Come on guys!), The brutality of the Iofer’s death (bloody PG’ed to death, at least give us a neck snap, Ma Costa did it last episode!) and better lighting (it was kinda hard to see initially on tv).
From the Show: The updated graphics (while I miss the armour, these bears look damn terrifying and I’m here for it!), That entire ending bit with Lyra, Iofer and Iorek (while the movie was admittedly cool with that “Is that all” bit, I much prefer Lyra coming to Iroeks aide, Iofer realising he’s been duped and going for the kill, and Iorek finding the strength to get up and take him down. I stan a protective Father Bear).
Now we just need an adaption that puts all of that together and we might get something close to what we deserve!
for some reason, not showing yorick killing lorek and hearing him scream like that makes it even more graphic
idk why but i like how Iofur smack Iorek head when he called him a pup XD still i agreed the movie is better
0:25 round 1, fight!⚔⚔⚔⚔⚔⚔⚔⚔⚔⚔⚔⚔
This is that golden compass preqel
And we witness her, mostly, witnessing the fight, instead of witnessing the full fight ha!
Why didnt they add the jaw snap off??
Yeah... Brutal...😒👌
movie bear fight was better, but this fight is a close second
It's tempting to draw comparisons between the movie and series here. Instead I'll just be glad we get to enjoy both for what they are.
This scene is objectively rad as hell but I can't help but prefer the movie/book version. Which is not something I thought I'd say about this otherwise TREMENDOUS adaptation!
COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
Ripping off jaw may be too much.. r these serials movie for kids? Hehehe

i wish they had a scene of lofur raknison put blood on his face before he and iorek byrnison fought each other in this episode
Everyone says the movie fight scene is better, but I like this one more. It's a lot grittier.
Grittier than having your jaw ripped off? What are you smoking?
@@giacomorinaldi8803 i liked this one better to everyone have the right to like something you don't

How did lofur get that scar in his face
Oh iorek,s too badly injury
