Full ceremony: President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to former Marine, Dakota Meyer Thursday. Meyer is only the third living recipient of the award.
Happy to be a sister to every Marine out there, and especially one like this. Thank you for being a part of what reminds me every day why I joined. Semper Fi!!!!
Anyone that has that medal and is still living is officially one bad ass dude. Congratulations Meyer. President Obama, Thank you for honoring our this young man.
Two great American men that served this country with honor. Thank you Sgt Meyer and thank you President Obama we would be a far better country if all Americans had half the honor and dedication as you
What a nice honor for SGT Meyer, Gunny Rodriguez, the Fire Team members, their families and all my brothers and sisters of the US Marines. I'm so proud of my fellow young Marines. Semper-Fi
Courage is something that exist in us all...but it is our choice when we find it and use it to perform in the world around us...this "humble" Marine chose his moment. He saved those he could and returned those he could not save to their families and homes. In Vietnam I knew many men like him...filled with courage and care for their fellow Marines.
Hold on.. what about the driver?! He had his life on the line the same as Dakota? Also massive respect to ALL the troops who were wounded, who fought, who killed and who laid down their life for their brothers in arms. Massive respect to you all, and Rest in Peace the those fallen hero's.
Dakota was a Marine. For those of who are/were active, we know this esteem for his bravery is not really about The Corps, The Military, or Country. All this is secondary to Dakota as a human being. This brave young man had it in him all along. That's why he is a hero, and for no other reason. One has it or they don't. Dakota has the right stuff. He is an exception to the extreme.(USMC/1976)
Very brave young man. You can't save them all, you can't save everyone. He's thinking of the people he couldn't save, but so many he DID save. A lot of pain in his eyes.
I think the last Devil Dog who was still alive to receive his own Medal of Honor was in 1968. A Non Commissioned Officer (NCO) will always be the true backbone of the Marine Corps. Semper Fi, Brother and well done.
You being a conservative has nothing to do with it, the speech was very half assed and could've used more emotion and thought in his wording since he repeated multiple sentences. By the way did you graduate English class?
Ooh rah Sergeant; you kept the faith. Like Pres Obama said, you did your duty with the fullest measure of devotion. 36 people are alive because of you, and four got the memorials they so rightly deserved because of you. The Marine Corps is a brotherhood, and you kept the faith. All Marines from here to eternity will know of your extreme esprit de corps. Your love of your Brothers in Arms will be a part of recruit training from here to eternity. Well done.
Bravo Zulu Dakota from Hawaii Marines, Marines like yourself stand for everything that is good, clean and strong in America . A right way of living which embodies honor & discipline. Your life gives testimony to all that is right in our country. Some say we are becoming weak as a nation in mind and body; Sergeant, you have proven that supposition is bunk ! Mahalo nui loa from Hawaii Dakota & Semper Fidelis Leatherneck, P.T. Brent Did you do your "PT" today Sgt. Meyer ?
@Kalrenbok You got it!! just because you're driving doesn't mean you're risking your life less. A risk is a risk and a life is a life, and you only have one. Wether the humvee was armored or not they both risk their lifes they both saved those soldiers lifes, they both have the same motto "Marines never leave their wounded behind" they both should get the same merit and same medal. Semper Fi.
On September 15th, 2011, Marine Sgt. Dakota Meyer was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. This date also happens to be the last date to file for the FDNY Exam. Sgt. Meyer is currently seeking for an extension to file for this exam so he could have the chance to become one of New York's bravest. All receiving this message are urged to make phone calls, forward this message and take any other action to make this Marine’s wish come true. Thank you.
how disrespectful referring to these Marines by their first name. they earn their rank through blood, sweat, and tears and deserve to be addressed by it at all times.
I love that you posted the video, but I just have to say, there are no former Marines. They are Marines from the day they graduate Boot camp to the day they die. This man, and every other man who has graduated from Parris Island or San Diego, will always be a Marine.
up and beyond the call of duty we the citizens of america and all of the men and women of the armed forces thank you for all you do for our great country, SEMPER FI HOORAH!!!
It's the love for our country, I did 4 years in the Corp and when we screwed up we were all sent to the "Rose Garden" but when we did a good job... we all got that phone call home. All I am saying is if when there's a bank robbery!! The driver gets tha ax too for participating. It should be the same way if this Devil Dog got a medal, the driver should get one too. Not a pat in the back. Juan could had say "No, you drive yourself" NO!! He said lets go and risk OUR life.
Those who dislike this are Cowards. They where born Cowards ,and someday will die a Coward.Dakota Meyer is no Coward. He is now a American Hero.He is also a Marine.
Thank you Mr. Meyer for fighting for American interests and defending liberty of all persons on this earth like only a US Marine can. Because of you our enemies understand our resolve and they know what they up against, the bravery of Americans like you sir.
ask any medal of honor recipient, they say they arent heros. in civilians eyes they are heros. but they dont see it that way, they see their fallen comrads as heros.
just cause one man makes a mistake does not mean that all make the same mistake, and it would be nice to see both democrats and republicans come together in honor of the men that didnt make it back to this country.
@503karichi Very possible as most people think it is called the "CMH" The "C" part of that comes from the "C"ongressional Medal of Honor Society. Named "Congressional" because it was established by Congress. The award is simply called The Medal of Honor.
@salserazo Yeah, Juan Rodriguez took some risk too, but he drove the vehicle the whole time. Sgt Meyer was exposed from the waste up the entire time, except for when he was fully exposed saving the wounded marines and soldiers
@Thedarksancity, the term "Former Marine" been around forever. its used when someone say Ex Military. Former meaning no longer in the Service, as active or reserve. But you are correct in one thing, once a Marine...always a Marine.
@salserazo (Then) SSgt Rodriguez-Chavez was my SNCOIC in Oki, I have never met a more dedicated or humble Marine in my life. There are not many Staff NCO's in the Corps these days that genuinely give a damn about their Marines, but he was one. The boot PFC I was back then considers it an honor to have made him coffee and to have been corrected by him for clipping my shop keys on my belt loop. :) And I can say with certainty that he needed no Cpl to tell him they were going in.
even as a liberal this is moving. i feel like this nation has done so many things wrong in the last decade but this kinda ceremony really makes you feel like we at least have a bit of honor left in our core
@artscriticXX What does that mean? I found no reference to that, but did get many deals on wheelbarrows doing a google search. Are you being mean to Dakota Meyer?
@Hofgoblin I didn't disrespect any branch so I don't understand why you are telling me this. And yes, obviously they all still have the skills, I said Marines because we are on a Marine video.
It's a pretty sad day when you have a guy accepting the highest achieving award for Valor the United Stated military gives out and you still have people arguing over the most petty stuff, that in the long term doesn't overlay affect them and most likely never will. Get over your first world problems, stop arguing and show some respect.
@TheMnmLism If they were CIVILLIANS then why did they fire upon American Soldiers? He did what he had to do, and you should be honored to watch this video, of one of Americas finest young men.
@TwentySixToSeven:Friend, Marine is spelled with a capital "M," and Chuck Norris could not tie Dakota's combat boots. Norris is an image of media created by film-Dakota is the real deal.
@ginofrater No, they wont let him. But that will not stop people from voting for him. As a voter you need to vote for who you think is best, not what a politic party thinks is right. He has my vote and many others that I know.
Once a Marine ALWAYS a Marine. No former, no has been, no used to be. I'm a retired Marine and I always will be a Marine.
There is NO former Marine! Once a Marine always a Marine!!!
This is the kind of UA-cam video that should viral and get millions of view!
THIS is the kind of man young teens should look up to, and aspire to be.
That man deserves more than just a medal of honor.
Thank you Sgt Meyer and thank you President Obama we would be a far better country if all Americans had half the honor and dedication as you
I read his book...UNbelievable...So inspiring.
What a nice honor for SGT Meyer, Gunny Rodriguez, the Fire Team members, their families and all my brothers and sisters of the US Marines.
I'm so proud of my fellow young Marines. Semper-Fi

probably the best medal of honor ive seen. respect
Very brave young man. You can't save them all, you can't save everyone. He's thinking of the people he couldn't save, but so many he DID save. A lot of pain in his eyes.

Thank You Dakota , Great American
I'm a conservative and I believe President Obama's speech was very thoughtful and a nice tribute to these men of valor.
You being a conservative has nothing to do with it, the speech was very half assed and could've used more emotion and thought in his wording since he repeated multiple sentences. By the way did you graduate English class?
Semper Fi, Brother. Let's bow our head's for those brothers that didn't make it back, wish their families we'll. USMC 1974-1977.
What a brave, brave young man! Thank you, sir!
Thank you, Marine! Semper Fi!

Did you do your "PT" today Sgt. Meyer ?
As the wife of a Marine who served in Iraq i thank you for this video.

You can see that the guy is quite full of emotion at 14:35 +
Poor guy, can't be easy witnessing your friends die before your eyes.
how disrespectful referring to these Marines by their first name. they earn their rank through blood, sweat, and tears and deserve to be addressed by it at all times.

ask any medal of honor recipient, they say they arent heros. in civilians eyes they are heros. but they dont see it that way, they see their fallen comrads as heros.
@Scope000 It is NOT called the "Congressional" Medal of Honor, it is just The Medal of Honor.
Once a Marine, always a Marine!
@salserazo he earned the navy cross. 2nd highest award a marine or sailor can receive.
just cause one man makes a mistake does not mean that all make the same mistake, and it would be nice to see both democrats and republicans come together in honor of the men that didnt make it back to this country.
This marine guy should get the Chuck Norris award! Thumbs up if you think this comment is cool!
@503karichi Very possible as most people think it is called the "CMH" The "C" part of that comes from the "C"ongressional Medal of Honor Society. Named "Congressional" because it was established by Congress. The award is simply called The Medal of Honor.
This title is wrong there cant be a former Marine once a Marine always a Marine
@salserazo Yeah, Juan Rodriguez took some risk too, but he drove the vehicle the whole time. Sgt Meyer was exposed from the waste up the entire time, except for when he was fully exposed saving the wounded marines and soldiers
He looks pained by what he has seen. I hope he one day fully believes he did all he could and is at peace with it.

There is no such thing as a former marine once a marine always a marine. Semper Fi
Dont say former marine once a marine always a marine.
This guy is real hero

This marine should receive the Chuck Norris award.
@Palanthon You spelled "I" wrong.
I would enlist, but like Rush Limbaugh I've got an anal cyst that makes me 4-F. It hurts. Should I do oxies for the pain?
even as a liberal this is moving. i feel like this nation has done so many things wrong in the last decade but this kinda ceremony really makes you feel like we at least have a bit of honor left in our core
Unnecessary to state you're a "liberal" that's like talking about your haircut and just randomly mentioning "hey btw I drive a Dodge charger"
This guy goes to my college. Played basketball against him lol
I got Medal of Honor for PC.
Problem?
Once a marine always a marine, whether its 4 years or 40
@artscriticXX What does that mean? I found no reference to that, but did get many deals on wheelbarrows doing a google search. Are you being mean to Dakota Meyer?
Am Reading Dakota Meyers Book Called 'Into The Fire' Please Do Grab It If You Can Its Amazing !
Sargent Dakota Meyer I salute you, God bless you.
when chuck norris goes to bed, he checks under his bed for Sgt. Dakota

How many beers is a president allowed to have? I hope it's not too many.

Former? What the hell?.. Once a Marine, ALWAYS a Marine. Oorah.
i suppose there are those in this nation who believe that being liberal means one is un american. Glad to see there is still decent against that idea.
Marines are a breed, not a branch, there is no such thing as former....
at the end dakota was crying
truly amazing
amazing man!!
God was watching over you marine. good job
What does being a "liberal" make a difference? We are all americans.
what a fucking hero
@ginofrater I bet that Marine standing there disagrees.
@ginofrater No, they wont let him. But that will not stop people from voting for him. As a voter you need to vote for who you think is best, not what a politic party thinks is right.
He has my vote and many others that I know.
Juan got the Navy Cross
I know some old, "retired" Marines who would kick your ass for saying former Marine. Once a Marine always a Marine.
what a good good man god bless his soul
Marines do not salute with out covers or indoors, but in any other case then yes
hell of a man
