100%. Gomez never really came close to scoring other than the cement mixer at the very beginning of the match, and Paniro didn't gas out at all. Which is impressive, especially at the beginning of the season when a lot of guys are still getting their lungs right
Just want to say ahead of time that Austin Gomez is my 2nd favorite wrestler to watch right now in the NCAA (after Spencer Lee). He was 3rd, but Desanto graduated. Him coming back after retiring and being arguably the most exciting wrestler in college alongside Bryce Andonian and always putting on a show for the fans does not go unnoticed. I have 2 videos focusing on him that I still plan to post. This is not attended to be seen as kicking a man while he's down.
No, you didn't do that at all. We all know how good Austin Gomez is. He didn't Wrestle a great match, but...this kid Johnson is no fluke. Gomez took him lightly, his head wasn't in it, the whole UW team wasn't. If Cater Starocci loses to a kid tomorrow, you gotta cover it...and the whole reason you're talking about it is BECAUSE you know how good he is. That's how I took this. This Freshmen who people need to learn about, he beat Austin Gomez, one of the kinda breakout stars of last years post-season in College Wrestling. But I posted this in another video. One of my favorite 3-4 Wrestlers in this class, Mitchell Messinbrink, he wrestled Johnson last off-season. Johnson was not ready to Wrestle a full match, but Messinbrink(Son of John Messinbrink, the REAL man behind the success of the Askren Wrestling Academy and one of the best coaches I've ever seen at the HS level)...he's a kid who reminds me of Mark Ironside. ua-cam.com/video/snOXvetiDtE/v-deo.html Watch this match? Messinbrink isn't a guy who wins JUST beacuse he's a grinder and he wears you down(he DOES do that). But he's a guy who's technique is incredible, he's got great hips, great handfighting...and Johnson was destroying him...but he gassed. If Johnson can combine his re-attacks, if he can stay in the type of shape he needs to be, and if he can open up like he does to start that match, I think he could AA this year if he doesn't RS. Messenbrink worked out with O'Toole, Keckiesen, two guys who in their first two years have gone 3/1 and 3/3...Messenbrink has also won a Silver Medal at the World Championships...so it's not small feat to take it too him and be up 8-1 and on the verge of teching him. Johnson reminds me of a bigger RBY who's just not mature yet and needs to complete his arsenal, but he has that type of toughness, he's that tough to score on, and he has that type of upside.
@@tylersburner106 Yeah...I can get lost in this shit. And it's not just my guys, or guys I know, it's easy to root for other guys. Kizhan Clarke last year. It's a weird sport. You see them win, it just hits different. You know the time and what it takes to get there. ...unless it's Askren or most Iowa guys!
I'm excited to see how Johnson will preform this season. He is for sure gonna shake up this weight class. But now that he is on the radar and his opponents begin to study him, it will be interesting to see how his next few matches play-out.
Yeah. Being a fly on the wall is always nice because guys aren't really preparing for you. Now he just shot into the top 10 (maybe even top 5) in the weight class and coaches will be looking at him now. Similar to what happened to Yahya Thomas from Northwestern
That reattack was slick. The angle of the leg being attacked, the way he cut through the backside of the arm and kept Gomez’s head and reshot away while readjusting and pivoting to a reattack. Superb. I remember a few years back having Mike Mal at my wrestling club a few years ago and we went over this very technique, down block step and pivot to reattack. This is really smooth.
Love watching Paniro Johnson wrestle! He graduated from a private school near me, so I've been able to see him wrestle a lot over the years. Such a fun wrestler to watch. He graduated from the same school as Starocci, just 2 years later ....NW PA isn't as well know for great wrestlers as places like Lehigh Valley or SW PA, but some amazing wrestlers definitely come out of here ...Spencer Lee was from up in this area until he and his parents decided to move to Franklin regional for his wrestling...
Gomez is a power wrestler much like tomasello and Imar. Power wrestlers will usually win 95-98 % of the time. And usually the first two times they wrestle a finesse wrestler. But the finesse wrestler studies and cracks the code. And they turn the opponents strength into a weakness. That's why tomasello always made it to the big dance but never won. That's why Imar only had two championships. People figured out that Imar would be sucking for air if he had to wrestle the whole match. Gomez is sort of a hybrid power wrestler. That makes him dangerous all the time. I think Johnson maybe gets beat two or three times this year. But he will definitely be all American and I'll be really surprised if he doesn't make the top three to five. Yianni just got a dose of reality. I think he needed that to get his head in the right place. I just found this podcast and I really like the style. Rapid feedback on headline matches. Also good analysis.
EYGM I love the match breakdowns man. There are going to be some good match ups throughout the season, I hope you do more! I can't wait to see how these guys adjust if they face each other again.
More great content and analysis. You have a great insight. No one gets his deep as you on the technique. People just kind of cover results and scores in a very cursory matter and it requires no insight or depth. Keep up the good work. I really hope this channel goes far.
Love your wrestling analyses (this is probably the third I've seen on your channel). Just one question -- you indicate that Johnson initiated 4 shot attempts and failed to convert on any of them, but he had 3 takedowns -- does this mean that his 3 takedowns were defensive/counters? Thanks, and again, nice video!
I'm big on Iowa State and was big on them last year too! They have so much potential! Their team just has so much raw talent they need to develop/continue to develop: Yonger Bastida, Kysen Terukina, Paniro Johnson, Marcus Coleman, and of course David Carr!!! SO much upside!
I was at this match(These duels). Wisconsin looked...bad. I know Gomez and a few guys have had a little bug going 'round, but...shit, you know how it is, it's Wrestling. I always thought I wrestled my best when I was sick because I had to...kinda make sure that I was in perfect position, took advantage of my opportunities because I may not feel good in the 3rd. So if that WAS an issue and I don't even know if it was, it doesn't matter. Gomez looked slow on his feet and Johnson looked...like he was playing a game. His feet were like the fucking flash. The WAY that match played out may have been a fluke...but I'm not sure Johnson beating Gomez was a fluke. What I'D say as a coach(which...I am one, but nobody listens to me) but I'd try and use this as a stepping stone for Paniro Johnson to get on the attack more. He was sitting back. If Gomez Wrestles that match and doesn't push the pace, just works for hand control or is a grinder, not someone who's attacking, I don't know if Johnson is scoring...based on how he was Wrestling. We were in on this guy out of HS(after ONE Tourney, I know we should have offered more!)...but he has the feel, the ability, the explosiveness to score on HIS offense. The scouting report is going to get out there. Johnson needs to be more aggressive in pushing the pace and being the aggressor. He needs to work on moving in and out, shot fakes, and then taking his OWN shots. This kid is already legit..he's going to win matches vs good kids by scoring late, but he's so good in scrambles, he needs to initiate them. I understand vs Gomez, he's so explosive and wild that it can be tough to get to that head space where YOU'RE the one pulling the trigger, but that's what he'll have to do as the season goes along vs these tougher kids. A guy like a...Alex Marinelli(but at 149) is the type of guy who's gonna give him trouble if he's waiting for them and trying to score on a counter. This is a kid who could be on the podium this year and I'm not just saying that because of one match vs a flat footed Gomez, he's legit. No doubt about that.
Some of the most intelligent wrestling I've ever seen. His awareness of both his legs and Gomez's legs is so precise. Johnson's already made himself a known name in his freshman year! With regards to their initial shot attempts though, I think they both made the same crucial mistakes. They shot directly in, head on. Not much misdirection seen from either guy whether it was a feint inside step or sweep single. With some clever hand fighting up top and misdirection, Johnson's initial offense would be ridiculously hard to defend.
I finally got to see him actually go after a guy and be the aggressor when he wrestled Murin and his initial offense looked great for that short period
Thank you again bro 👏🏼. You hit this out the park and delivered a special treat for us all. Sheeesh man we really enjoyed seeing the way you you created this. It was a great start to the season and we want to hear your thoughts on our sport. We are all here with you 🫵🏼 bc we believe in your ability to coach, teach , and inspire this new generation of wrestlers. Your technical breakdowns are the best on YT. Our sport needed that and you filled that gap. We also need mindset inspiration and tough lessons for these guys. Mixing a little of that in, with your technical expertise, while breaking down these big matches, might be something to consider. But big ups to you on this. That kid came out of nowhere and took it to Austin. The entire team looked a step behind all night. Hamiti & Carr was awesome too. Am I being to greedy by making a breakdown request on that one too? Those 2 guys are in the toughest, most stacked weight class this decade IMO. Wisconsin got bullied off the mat and this will be a good thing by Christmas. Them boys got dummyflinged around and it look kidnda like they had a felt that weight cut more. Freshman showed out this weekend and it looked like Michael McGee, was in there the way he was telegraphing Gomez too easy while shifting and attacking laterally. Congrats to Mendez, Swederski, and others with big starts. Good stuff as always 👏🏼🔥💪🏼💯🏆🏅🤼♂️
Thank you for the kinds words. I'll definitely rewatch the Carr vs Hamiti matchup to see if I can do a breakdown on it. Carr kept doing this weird thing with his knee to get out of tough positions, so I'm sure there are a few things that I can talk about
To expand on what I was saying, this is Johnson vs Mitchell Messinbrink, a kid who reminds me of an Mark Ironside or maybe a bigger Brands. Just an absolute beat who just keeps coming, stays in position. He's not just a guy who wears you out, he's a guy who's INCREDIBLY tough to score on. Now Messinbrink has the gas tank of one of those Military re-fuelers, but Johnson has to be able to go 6 minutes or 7 now and you can see where the outline is for a...Keegan O'Toole(a teammate of Messinbrink BTW, Ben Askren's former coach, the guy who takes credit for every athlete he's ever met's success). Problem with Messinbrink he gets WAAAY too emotional. He wants to win so badly, he....well, he needs to reign it in a bit. But the POINT is Johnson has all the tools. If he is in shape in this match, he finishes it via tech. But he allowed Messinbrink to wear him down and vs a Wrestler THAT GOOD, the #1 157 LB recruit(excluding Levi Haines as he didn't Wrestle in HS or since it's the same class, next to Levi Haines) Johnson had him on his heels. Johnson is going to be something special and I would imagine working with David Carr is going to be VERY good for him. I'd like to see him RS this year as that '49 pound weight class, you're fighting for 2nd unless there's an injury.
Two of those re-shot takedowns looked exactly like what Penn St. and especially RBY does. Lately, I've been pushing this type of re-shots with my kids.
Great to see new exciting talent.. everyone loves a good upset.. but then maybe it wasn't an upset, and he's really that good.. Will be an All American..
In the 1980 Great Plains I wasn't ranked in the Amateur Wrestling News national rankings, not even in the honorable mention category. I got to the finals and faced #1 ranked Mike DeAnna in the finals. DeAnna was the NCAA runner-up to Mark Churella in 1979. I won 8-1. In the dual at Iowa DeAnna beat me 14-8. I beat Perry in the 1981 NCAA semi's in OT then faced #1 ranked Mike DeAnna in the finals. I won 10-4.
Yeah. Chain wrestling is attempting one technique and immediately going to the next. A reattack is just your opponent attacks and you defend and attack back
I don't know man. It cost him in his blood round match against Desanto 100%, but it was also the reason he beat him the first time. He can shut it on and off when need be now. His matches against Sasso showed that he can wrestle basic and win a match that way. After beating Ridge Lovett at the dual last year wrestling that style he just decided to go for it all at the Big 10 Championships and it worked out. His cement mixer is definitely super risky and he has got caught in it PLENTY of times, but I think that style is his only way to beat Yianni in a 7 minute match. He's going to need a big 6-point move
@@earnyourgold i dont disagree with you. when it works, like versus lovett and sasso at last year's big10s, it works extraordinarily well. but when it fails, it fails badly. also... i don't think that's gonna work on yianni. he's too good at freestyle to allow someone to do that stuff to him
@@alovesupreme 😂aye I watch A LOT of wrestling. A guy like Gomez can beat anybody and also lose to a handful of people as well. We’ll see how it goes the next time they meet up. I love to see what adjustments wrestlers are able to make
Yeah it is. Barnett lost in OT and Hilger got taken down at the very end after some weird shoe situation. Hamiti was in the match against Carr, but couldn't get any offense going. Lamont got beat handily, but he's up to a new weight and doesn't look 100% with that brace on his knee.
No they were filled. The gym is built to house everyone mainly on one side. No one but the athletes were allowed to sit in the other bleachers until the end
He's gonna be a problem, Iowa State looks stacked this year, I believe Swizerski is there also, another Redshirt that I believe will be winning big wit Monday leading that team

I beat Perry in the 1981 NCAA semi's in OT then faced #1 ranked Mike DeAnna in the finals. I won 10-4.
I’m sorry if this is a dumb question, but is this the actual Mark Schultz?
wild, going to be a fun season.
Yeah 100%
Very curious as a mma fan, and someone whose only done striking forms of martial arts. Is there a difference between chain wrestling and reattacks?
Yeah. Chain wrestling is attempting one technique and immediately going to the next. A reattack is just your opponent attacks and you defend and attack back
Got destroyed at my tourny yesterday. Crazy how high the skill gap is on this sport
Love to see a Top Guy get taken down... unless He Is Me.
Thank you
3:18 aww this is soo cute, look at his teammates
Smokin' hot win for that kid. Go Cyclones & Go David Carr!!!
Love your videos
Gigantic for 149
Dude is a tank
that “no risk it, no biscuit” style of gomez’s is gonna be his downfall
I don't know man. It cost him in his blood round match against Desanto 100%, but it was also the reason he beat him the first time. He can shut it on and off when need be now. His matches against Sasso showed that he can wrestle basic and win a match that way. After beating Ridge Lovett at the dual last year wrestling that style he just decided to go for it all at the Big 10 Championships and it worked out. His cement mixer is definitely super risky and he has got caught in it PLENTY of times, but I think that style is his only way to beat Yianni in a 7 minute match. He's going to need a big 6-point move
@@earnyourgold i dont disagree with you. when it works, like versus lovett and sasso at last year's big10s, it works extraordinarily well. but when it fails, it fails badly. also... i don't think that's gonna work on yianni. he's too good at freestyle to allow someone to do that stuff to him
@@earnyourgold turns out you were 1000000000% right
@@alovesupreme 😂aye I watch A LOT of wrestling. A guy like Gomez can beat anybody and also lose to a handful of people as well. We’ll see how it goes the next time they meet up. I love to see what adjustments wrestlers are able to make
Just even crazier because he beat Yianni after losing this match
Good Match
Excellent vid
Crazy cause Gomez dominated Yan a few days later
I wish there was some type of go fund me for wrestlers. It's such a tough sport. They ALL deserve a NIL deal
bro pleaseee tell me where I can find the full videos, I have been dying to watch this meet.
It's available on Rokfin. The Battle Of The River City. It was a great dual. Especially 125, 133, 141,149, and 165
The score wasn't close but the meet was competitive.
Yeah it is. Barnett lost in OT and Hilger got taken down at the very end after some weird shoe situation. Hamiti was in the match against Carr, but couldn't get any offense going. Lamont got beat handily, but he's up to a new weight and doesn't look 100% with that brace on his knee.
It took me way too long to realize I wasn't watching a jacked 14 year old kid winning this match.
Crazy how empty the stands are fo is Wisconsin vs Iowa State
No they were filled. The gym is built to house everyone mainly on one side. No one but the athletes were allowed to sit in the other bleachers until the end
hey us 49 bois just a bunch of dawgs- any man can take the other on any given day
He's gonna be a problem, Iowa State looks stacked this year, I believe Swizerski is there also, another Redshirt that I believe will be winning big wit Monday leading that team
Mauller vs Johnson will be interesting. How is Johnson's mat game?
Non existent which is typically for a freshman and someone of his wrestling style. All neutral. Haven’t seen him tested on bottom yet
Can you tell us where to go to see the full match?
It’s on RokFin in an event called Battle Of The River City
💯💯💯
🔥
It dont mean a thing if you aint got that ring. Natty champ, natty champ nat nat natty. I lost all the time season start back in the day. Can you switch it to OD come tourney time.
Absolutely. November is a very long way from March. Bono and Gomez will make adjustments
Austin Gomez, lol. What a choke artist.
what are your thoughts on caleb henson over sammy sasso
Panini looked good but I think Austin looked a bit slow and clunky with his attacks. I think he is probably out of shape right now.
I read “in the county” haha
Who is the narrator? Hire that dude!
Gomez was shooting with his head down grasping air. Bad technique being exposed by Paniros.
Bro look at his physique ain’t no way he ain’t a problem good shit I’m trying to learn wrestling to add to my jiujitsu game thanks for break downs and videos just found your page
can anyone explain what a shot attempt is for someone who knows nothing about wrestling
Gomez started slow last year also
November is a LOOONNNGGG way from March. Adjustments will be made
Johnson is just quicker and stronger.
Excited to see the rematch
Built similar to yoel Romero
Yianni got him
Reattacks? Counter attacks?
where did you watch this meet? been looking everywhere for it
my mans, buy a podcast mic, blue yeti on amazon, $90. your channel subs will explode. a small investment will go a long way
FBA all day.
What high school did he come from
God/Jesus loves y’all
Pet peeve is great wrestlers giving up before the last whistle. Even if it's just 15 seconds. Fine you lost, don't go out like a whuss.
Johnson was beating him like 9-4 . Kinda hard to make anything happen in 15 seconds against a guys who's kinda punking you right now
yeah PPPP 814
you sounds like coach 30 lol
"Moment was too big, not an athlete, went straight to his back"
He got lucky
Jesus that’s a huge freshman
Right
I wonder if he is wrestling in the 174 pound weight class
Just joking I’m exaggerating. I thought he was a 157 pounder
Wow!
Gomez isn't great...he tries to throw but misses more times than he tries...he gets """LUCKY"""" more than he doesn't...I see 8 losses from him this season!!!!
Hype train .. all aboard. Way too transparent with your content, game is super weak.
