- Snowmaggedon 2K19 has arrived. And to think the trails were in practically perfect condition just a week ago? Madness! Shoutouts to VanCan and Derek for making this one of the most laugh-inducing laps I've ever done, and a pretty quick one at that! Also, colour correcting snowy footage is downright impossible.

These are my local trails and I can confirm they are sketchy in the winter

It's a bit worse now, the ice was better than the soft slush.
Slush isn't the greatest but ice is just plain dangerous. I know a couple of people who have recently been in the hospital due to surprise ice. I'd take slush!
If you don't mind me asking, what's Derrick's last name? I know a couple people in the area named Derrick and I was wondering if I knew him...

Do you guys ever run studded tires?
Good question: I have never ran studded tires out west. The snow level changes dramatically as you drop elevation (today for example was ~60cm at the top of the ride and ~2cm at the bottom). If the conditions were a lot more consistent and ice build up was more of a "thing" then I would invest in studs. Riding out East, absolutely worthwhile since the conditions don't have as much of a gradient as here.

@@Alex-wn8qh I'm on Burke a fair bit actually! Bullet Dodger is an amazing trail. I've filmed it several times but I want to wait until it's the perfect clip to upload: fast, active shooting range, and sunset or heavy fog. Someday...
Do you guys do anything for the trails? Do you know how that trail network came to be and the volunteer efforts to make that happen? I'd love to know if you attribute/support/donate to the BMBA, or any of the trail associations and ultimately trail builders that create the public spaces you are commercializing for these videos. If you were just making videos for you and your friends and people to enjoy - no sweat. But you are sponsored, and commercializing other people's products. No reply from VanCan when I asked the same of him. You care to comment?
Sure I can give a comment to this! Truthfully, I haven't done as much as I would like to for the sanctioned trail associations out West since I moved out here, other than purchasing an NSMBA membership and buying an entire season of fivers (two of which I did not end up racing). Where I went to university I ran the university cycling club for a couple years, and made an effort to get out to every local trail day that our trail systems offered (and recruit as many other interested students as I could), and get as many people on bikes as I could (through spin classes, group rides and other events). I also was (and still am) a Trailforks admin that helped map and detail a few entire trail systems out East, one with some particularly tricky land access issues. There are also some large things that I do behind the scenes for the bike industry that I have actively chosen to keep separate from my UA-cam channel; you will hopefully never see this side. I choose not to publicize any of this stuff because I feel that you shouldn't need to shout about having done a good deed. Also, while I may be monetized I really don't make very much money off of my videos, mostly because I don't try to market/share most my content. If you like what I make that's fantastic, and I'm very glad you stumbled upon and enjoy what I'm doing, but I've kept it very much "I upload what I find interesting". How's that for an answer?

Thanks for the detailed reply and that's refreshing to see you're pitching in in a mix of ways. You are right too, no one likes a braggart. I am trying to ensure that you, and your followers don't take these (or any) trails for granted. The trail associations have a tough enough time raising enough support just to keep these trails alive - the BMBA especially works really hard just to have those few trails. There are many people monetizing trails without attribution so singling you out isn't fair. But your videos about secret trails do trail advocates no favours.
I'd like to see everyone that is cashing in on the trails give credit (and support) where it's due and very, very few do. So, I challenge you guys to attribute the builders & association when you post these. You clearly have a large reach and can be part of the solution rather than a source of angst.
And a wise man once told me that there are hundreds and hundreds of dollars to be made in mountain biking. I am well aware you're not getting rich - just getting a little scratch and some free parts. But ask the builder who is sponsoring them and giving them free swag...
I'll attest to liking the videos. Good luck and I hope this inspires, not infuriates.
@@rockfordcan Thanks for the response. I’m more than happy to give credit to whatever trail association is responsible for the trail in each individual video. How do you propose this could be done in an unobtrusive, standardized fashion across all of my videos? I always link to the Trailforks trail pages in all of my video descriptions. Should I also include a link to the trail association's website in each description? What would you propose is the best course of action for UA-camrs like me to take, speaking as the president of the FVMBA?
As far as secret trails go I definitely see your point, but I also think my stance on that has been very fair. I’d be happy to discuss any of this stuff in further detail over PM, email, or a beer. Hopefully you’ll see me at an FVMBA trail day sometime this season!
@@DaleStone You seem like your more social media savvy than I - I'll let you figure out what works best. If it were me - above the sponsors and everything else, simple acknowledgment of the trail association making that trail happen, with a link to their page and or a shout out/link for membership. Attributing the original and/or current builder would also be high-marks. That data is sometimes listed on Trailforks for a given trail. They are truly the shoulders on which all of us stand. No builder = no MTB. The idea being the trail association supports the builders which make more and better trails. Membership in the collective movement is going to make the whole eco-system work (or work better at least). And if riders who are making money off the trails got corporate memberships - all the better.
We've had pro-riders reach out to us and do videos on our behalf with a donation drive in the video. That was the high-mark for how to close the loop on use of trails making them better for all.
