    She actually played the game pretty smartly.. Game 1, she discovered early-on that by hiding behind someone can avoid the motion detector. Game 2, she sneaked her way to discover what the guards were doing, then followed along with Sang Woo and ended up with the easiest honeycomb shape. Game 5, she chose 15th right behind Sang Woo again and made it across

    • @chewyeraser6056

      For game 5, picking number 15 was luck based. But she’s still very smart.

    • @Palepetal
      @Palepetal 2 роки тому +10

      She was very smart, but lost due to chance. No one knew that the glass would shatter like that, and she happened to get fatally wounded. Which is what the game runners were betting on. If she weren't fatally wounded I think she would have won the last game. She seems to be a lot better with knives than Gi-hun or Sang-woo, not to mention she has the secret pocket knife. She would have most likely been the winner if Sang-woo or Gi-hun were taken out instead of her.

    • @samgao3498
      @samgao3498 2 роки тому +6

      @@Palepetal Her pocket knife was taken by Deok Su during night riot and then confiscated by soldiers; and in the last episode, Sang-woo and Gi-han both showed enough skill with knife fight, they have the reflex to catching and disarming each other's attack. While I agree that she's more skilled with knife, it's highly possible for her to get disarmed half way through and the guys would have heavy physical advantage over her. Gi-hun and her probably won't really fight, but I can still see Sang-woo winning her without her being wounded prior.

    I don't know if others agree but I feel like in her final moments she saved Gi-hun both spiritually and literally. Knowing how Sang-woo is prone to trick and take advantage of others I was left with the feeling that he didn't really fell asleep, but was setting a trap to be able to kill them (most likely he was trying to get Gi-hun as he would have noticed that Sae-byeok was weak). So even if she wasn't aware of that possibility by not letting Gi-hun turn to the darkness she saved him from falling into a (supposedly) trap.

    My favorite character of the show.
    She lead a hard life, and got hard to survive. Hard, but not irredeemable.
    Ji Yeong & Gi Hun’s attempts to connect with her attributed to her “redemption arc”.
    Sae Byeok stopped Gi Hun from killing Seung Woo, and lead to him retaining his humanity. His compassion.
    Her name means “Dawn” in Korean.
    And like the saying goes;
    “It’s always darkest before the dawn.”

    Great analysis, just one (sorry, actually essay-length) thing to add that I think would complete your reading of her character (and the season overall).
    Like Ji-yeong, Sae-byeok's final act actually completed her character arc -- namely, in asking Gi-hun to look after her brother knowing she's about to die, she is finally and wholeheartedly trusting another person, not with her own life but with the most precious thing in her life. She has come to truly believe that morality and good actions are still possible as a result of Ji-yeong, and in turn she trusts Gi-hun to do right by her family and her wishes, in direct opposition to her secrecy and protecting of her family and herself before this moment. She also carries forward her own dreams and hopes for the future in that moment, as Ji-yeong did before her. That moment, along with her assertion that Gi-hun should not murder Sang-woo, made both her and Ji-yeong's deaths meaningful in carrying that positivity and humanity forward to the very end of the game when Gi-hun decides to quit rather than take another life.
    In fact, I would say Sae-byeok's final moments and decisions to believe in people pays off *beyond* the game as well -- that positivity is carried forward even to Il-nam as well, I think, in his final scene. That small, seemingly insignificant act ends up touching the people even at the very top of the ladder of society. As a result of Ji-yeong and Sae-byeok's actions, Gi-hun remains uncorrupted by the end of the games, steered away from further brutality through the kindness of others. As a result, he still believed at the end that a person's life fundamentally matters. And I think that's why Il-nam calls him in at the end, because he knows Gi-hun is a very unusual person, and he's fascinated and revivified from Gi-hun's outlook on the world. After all, Il-nam let him win at marbles for a reason, seemingly because he was moved by Gi-hun's kindness, and he was genuinely sorry to see Gi-hun become corrupted into cheating at the game. And I don't think Il-nam set out to experience the game the way it panned out -- Gi-hun is what changed it all for him.
    Il-nam calls Gi-hun in at the end for two reasons: to ask him two questions and to play that final game together. It's significant that he automatically assigns Gi-hun the position in the bet that someone will help someone else in need -- this is clearly the idea, the moral virtue, that Gi-hun as a person represents to him. The questions he asks are "Why didn't you use the money?" (i.e., why are you not greedy/why didn't you become like me?) and "Do you still trust in humanity being good?," the latter of which he actually asks *twice.* The latter in particular is obviously a significant question to him, it's something he's been mulling, and Gi-hun's beliefs and final outlook are important to Il-nam in some way. Important enough that he would choose this to be his final moments on earth (I think he took poison, probably in that water, otherwise the timing of his death is just too coincidental). But why? Well, Il-nam says it baldly. He's trying to "feel something" in his final moments.
    I think he actually WANTED to be proved wrong by Gi-hun; he ultimately wanted to lose that bet and he wanted to have reasserted to him that humanity can still be good. Gi-hun is someone who seemed to maintain the belief that human beings are good, worth saving, even after all the atrocities he witnessed. That's why he's so invested in asking Gi-hun if he still feels that way after the games. He wants to know that it's not just something that can exist inside the messed up parameters of the game but outside of it as well. Il-nam even says right before he dies, that it's thanks to Gi-hun, not thanks to the games in general that meaning and feeling was brought back to him. He says, "Thanks to you I got to remember all these things I had forgotten long ago." So it seems that perhaps Il-nam didn't just want to return to the simplicity of his own childhood, he also maybe wanted to return to some of that goodness and kindness as well.
    The final message, the importance of that scene, to me, is that everyone is equally screwed up by the system, even those at the top, but that kindness can still reach anyone -- even people like Il-nam who have become twisted, joyless husks as a result of a cruel system. At the end, kindness is what "saves" him, gives him some small amount of meaning in his last moments, as with Ji-yeong and Sae-byeok before him -- kindness and empathy and sacrifice are passed forward from Ji-yeong to Sae-byeok to Gi-hun, and those moments of human connection keep resonating outward from those moments.
    The ultimate message is that we can still change each other and maybe even the world through small acts of kindness. Pretty cool stuff.
    Anyway, just my two cents! Sorry for the essay and thanks for the video :)

    I have a theory that
    *_Ji Yeong was actually another trap planted by Il nam_* since Il nam is of old age, he *_would’ve wanted people to suffer the pain he did when his friends died and he had to keep living_* , and he wanted Sae Byeok to go through that.
    Also, *_Ji Yeong was never even in debt, she was in prison for her whole life_* because she killed her dad, so it wouldn’t actually make sense for them to choose her in the game, I mean, I get that she had nowhere to go and nothing to do with life anymore but she would’ve inherited SOME money from her mum or/and dad?
    *_The game was specifically for people in debt_* , but she said a man was waiting at the prison, but that means *_she didn’t play the card throwing game with him_* because you need to exit prison for that, so she said that he just gave her the card and left, even though they’re supposed to play the game with everyone, as we saw they did it with everyone at the train station in the last episode where Gi Hun was watching.
    Since Il Nam is of old age, he probably would’ve lost so many people close to him. It’s like being immortal, but watching your friends and family die. he wanted that to happen with Sae Byeok.
    *_Both Il Nam and Ji Yeong both died in episode 6 "Marbles", meaning Gi Hun lost a close friend (Il Nam) and Sae Byeok lost a close friend too_* , in the same episode. He wanted them to both suffer before they go to the end. and what a coincidence that they just had to accept that *their close friend died willingly for them* , and they both had to live through the guilt. Ali definitely wasn’t a trap though, because I’m sure the frontman looked into Sangwoo's history of embezzlement and sly, cunning nature, he knows that he will do anything to get his way.
    *_The old man knew that Gi Hun was playing him and felt guilty, and Sae Byeok also felt guilty of letting Ji Yeong die for her but the connection is that both of these traps both died willingly for their close friend._*
    *_TDLR_* : Ji Yeong is a trap set by Il Nam.
    By the way, if it was too long, but you would've liked to read some, I have bolded some key points. Also please let me know if you've ever seen a theory with this idea, I've been looking for clarification. Tell me if you think I got anything wrong, too. :)

      @hassanalkhalaf1115 2 роки тому +5

      I like the theory but it doesn't hold a lot of points.
      First of all unlike il-Nam and Ali (not saying he survived) we actually saw her being shot.
      She may not be in debt (as long as the prison doesn't want the money back they spend on her) but she was still without money. I highly doubt that her parents left anything for her. She comes from a christian household and if her father is anything like the christian player then he's conservative. That he hits his wife and daughter also tells us that he's sexist. Why should a conservative sexist spare money for his daughter? It's fair to assume that he wanted her to marry as soon as possible so she would be another mens "problem". I highly doubt that he would want his daughter to be independent. Sure her mother would most likely want her to be independent but would the father allow her to have this wish considering how he treated her? Its possible that she saved some money in secret like a lot of abused women do but he killed her probably before she could hand them over to her daughter.
      Last but not least let's go to the salesman. We can't say for sure that he has one single way to hire the players. We saw different ways so far. The game and offering the card immediately. They did some researches about their players therefore they know how to get them and a bit of their personalities.

      Ok, this is DEFINITELY my favorite theory from this series.
      I started the series knowing that the old man was bad (blame on the spoilers) and I realized the tricks he had to fool the participants. When I saw Ji Yeong appear, I was always suspicious of her because her character literally came out of nowhere and it was very strange that we can't see her in any game, you don't even see her among the people in the doll game or Dalgona game , but curiously it only appears when groups must be formed and when players are forced to meet people, as if its function was always to emotionally weaken a participant by creating a bond.
      I feel that the old man wanted to weaken Saebyeok because he saw her as too strong and strategic a contestant, and probably the old man bet on Gi Hun (remember he was also VIP)
      Maybe that also explains why in all of jiyeong's scenes she looks bored and carefree, but the only thing we see that she has motivation for is chasing Saebyeok everywhere or looking at her from afar, even in the elevator scene when jiyeong sees that Saebyeok is cold and complicated, he looks at her very directly and smiles. As if it was a plan or a challenge (to tell the truth, at first I thought he liked saebyeok)
      Something that I correct you is that ji yeong did have debts. He inherited his father's debts, but his whole story may be fake anyway, I still think Jiyeong is an actress or relative of the old man.

    What I don't understand is not understanding why she isnt friendly or asking should we feel bad for her seeing how ruthless she can be or because she wanted to stay in the death games, and I laugh because I'm like...this is measured against what? Your personal or general sense of how people should be? Open and friendly? At all times? Say-Byeok is fine as she is she doesn't need to act likeably to be liked, no one should have to be happy and friendly, being ruthless can be valid it's only when it's put up against cookie cutter morality like this video and we see where she comes from but pick it apart assuming from her nature how she thinks and what her motives are and we don't know, not being north Korean you can't judge or look sideways as to why she's so unfriendly or staying in the games after seeing so many die, you may act or think a certain way and maybe expect others to think like you but you aren't her, she isn't you and her doing what she did doesn't/and shouldn't lessen us feeling bad for her because we may not be able to do what shes done, her sensibilities are more practical as they've kept her alive longer than trusting someone, and that's ok, the world is full of untrustworthy people, it's naively thinking otherwise that leads to more trouble

    I don't understand why Gi-Hun was trying to help Sae-Byeok. By helping her successfully it would just mean that he would have to murder her if he was to live, unless the show went with some typical cop-out of an ending were they both got to survive for some deus-ex-feeling reason.

    • @Maglors_grief
      @Maglors_grief 2 роки тому +29

      I assume if Sae-Byeok lived and she was the one Gi-Hun had to play against in the final game that he would try and do what he did with Sang-Woo and attempt to end the entire game by asking for a vote to be done.

      @hassanalkhalaf1115 2 роки тому +5

      He wanted a friend against Sang-Woo. The two men couldn't wait to finally fight each other. Gi hun wanted to kill him but he also couldn't make sure he'll make it out alive but what matters for him was that his family is safe so he made a deal with SB to look after each others families.
      Let's also keep in mind that the three last standing candidates don't actually know how many player could make it till the end

    I think Sae-Byeok never actually died. I feel like the motivation Ji-Yeong gave her, boosted Sae-Byeok’s determination to win for her. Although it is a slim chance, considering Sae-Byeok got stabbed (by a glass shard at the end of glass bridge and stabbed again by Sang-Woo before the commence of the last game), I just have a feeling she somehow escaped from being cremated by the guards, or maybe the guards helped her escape for some odd reason - that would be a great plot twist if there ever was a series two of Squid Game. This isnt my original theory btw, lots of people share this theory and I doubt people know who originated this theory, but I agree with it nevertheless.

      I agree. They never said “player 067 was eliminated” when she “dies”. We also often cut to guards collecting organs in the show. They could use those organs to help her one way or the other. Plus it was a offscreen death we never knew what truly happened.

    I'm asian and I never really felt attracted to asians since i was born and grew up in America.. but This actress is so lovely and beautiful. Makes me kinda wanna fall in love with her. As far as her character goes, I deeply wanna save her from the cards she was dealt.. The realization just how unfair this world really is mainly b/c of the few wealthy people with no morals and empathy. This is a metaphor for our society and the battle of classism in a nutshell. Characters and shows like these really shows you no matter where you are in this world, there is always more pain and internal suffering in our reality that we are blinded to. I hope the compassion for others and strangers can unite us as a whole instead of constantly being seperated by small petty differences like outward appearances, the amount of money in ur bank, ur status in life, and the pressure of society that makes us all wanna be part of the norm.. Becasue all that is a fake and a facade. Whats real is the connections we have as humanity as a whole and I hope we can start to think less of ourselves and help others in need so we can unite as 'We the People' and hopefully spread understanding, patience, and compassion to all walks of life on earth. You from planet earth? Then we are all the same. I dunno where I'm going with this but I love everyone and I hope in the future, there will be less suffering in the world through COMPASSION AND EMPATHY
