    When I was in Home Economics in school (60 years ago), our teacher would have us pull thread until it went all the way across. Then if it didn't line up, we had to stretch the fabric. Thankful for the tools we have today. Thank you for this great video.

      (Jayne) I remember pulling the thread as well in Home Ec class...I had forgotten that exercise we had to do.
      Alot of changes in our past 60yrs. Lol

    Thank you for this video. I had problems with straight cuts. Like one other comment, years ago in home economics class we were taught to pull the thread and stretch the fabric. I have been doing that for years and still had problems. Thankful for this video. So much easier and able to obtain a straight cut. Thank you for all your videos. You do an excellent presentation of what and how you are working your quilts. As a beginner on quilts you are helping me a "LOT".

    Thx. What I do additionally is to press the “new” fold. That is also helping when I get that fabric of the comic book carton when I want to use the remainder of the fabric.

    Great demo. I had no idea. Thank you so much because I've never seen any kind of demo and explanation for this. Way back in the day lol, I really didn't see irregular bolt fabric. But I'm talking about 30-40 years ago and technology/techniques were much different.

    My Mom was a wonderful seamstress, making clothes for the public for many years. More than once she had me at the opposite end of a piece of fabric tugging opposite corners, straightening the grain of the fabric. Had no idea at the time what a wonderful thing she was teaching me!

      I'm good so far. I definitely don't have full range of motion yet. My 3 days a week workouts are helping I hope to achieve the goal to be able to move my hip like I use to.

    When making multiple cuts as in cutting strips for binding, borders or strips for piecing many years ago I was taught to stop and rearrange the fabric and restraighten edge even though it looks straight because it likely isn’t. I had forgot about that. Thanks for a great reminder.

    Great informative video! I have so much trouble cutting my fabric. I measure and I think it's straight And then when I put it against Another piece I cut I can see that it's off So this is going to help me Cut street lines. Thank you!

    I was binge watching some of your older sew Sunday episodes and on one you asked how tall everyone was. I'm going to make you feel tall. I started out at 5'1 and have shrunk down to 4'11 due to the fractures in my back.

      @@TiffanysQuiltingLife It is at times but I do what I can and sew when I'm not in a lot of pain. Spend a lot of time binge watching you for patterns and ideas.

    The sewn seams on a bolt is strange! I like when they just leave it cut and just overlap it.

      I imagine it is really frustrating for fabric shops because if it’s in the middle of a cut they are trying to sell the person definitely wouldn’t want it.

      It's very frustrating. I've bought scrap cuts from places that had them. So they do cut it out and sell it separately and discounted.

    It's another reason that some rip the fabric, then trim. The better the quality though, the harder it is to rip to get a straight starting edge. I feel like it rarely comes off the bolt straight.

    Thanks Tiff! We can all do with these reminders. I’m thinking the same would apply to precuts of fat quarters etc. I guess I knew some of this, but always was in a hurry to sew, so stuffed up many things, especially when making clothing! Thanks. 🇦🇺❤️❤️

    Love your shorter “Tips/Tricks” video. You are very concise in all your videos, which is appreciated by your viewers. Is it possible for you to make more videos in this fashion…like various quilt blocks, or quilting shortcuts, etc in videos 30 minutes or under? I’ve been watching you for years and watch your longer videos in the evening when the whole house is sleeping, but this shorter version was both informative and enjoyable. ❤

    In my Home Economics class in 1959 we were taught how to draw a strand of thread from the fabric to determine the straight line in the fabric. Takes some time, but it works.

      @@TiffanysQuiltingLife best I remember, cut a small part of selvedge off. Ruffle edge to separate fabric weave. Select one strand and slowly pull it out. It will follow the straight weave in fabric.
      I do it another way now, cut a slit in selvedge and rip it. Will give you a straight line with the fabric weave.

      Ya I have ripped before as well. I really only do that when I can't get it straight cause it's an older more wonky fabric.

    They do that with wool. Sometimes they put a couple of inches at the end which is not good for any thing.😅😅

    Another note is when you order just a yard wecan get cheated. Especially if you need all for binding. I always get extra.

      I do. But there will be squares that aren’t square and need to be repurposed.

    Is cutting 1 yard at a time from a bolt a good idea?

      Depends on if you need continuous yardage or not. It's easy to align the longer yardage if you just do a section that's arms reach. Then flatten out the rest.

      Some bolts have 8 yards some have 10 yards and some have 15 and some have 20. Just depends on the company.

    How much did that seam on the bolt cost you😅...burns me when I purchase a seam😡. But my fault for not standing by when being cut. Usually it is shown to me, or someone knew on the job. Ĵust tell me and I'll adjust the amount needed. I seam at time having to rearrange a project;

      Not much. I always try to remember to look at the bolts at the store for a loose thread on either end. When we order online though I can't do that.
