    You could install soft starts on the A/C units or use an active start adapter on the cord which would likely be the best option for the generator.😊

    I have same generator and just used it for a trip we took a couple days ago to Florida. I tried to start my AC unit a year ago on a hot day and it would kick the breaker. I did install an RV A/C soft starter before our trip last Friday and it worked like a charm. We dry camped in a Wal Mart parking lot in Alabama and we ran the main AC unit and the fan on the second AC in our main bedroom. It ran all night great without a refuel. For $3-350 the soft starter was worth it. I did buy the I-gen 2500 for my parallel unit and didn't need to use it or the 50amp cord

    Something to think about is the tri-fuel generator that Costco sells. That way you aren’t forced into buying/transporting gasoline. Accidents happen, and gas is extremely flammable !!!! Sorry, I was on an aircraft carrier for 5 of my 6 years active. Got lucky and went to several firefighting schools. Many of the appliances in the RV run off propane to begin with, why not have a generator that dos too? And if you are somewhere where they experience blackouts, the natural gas system is still generally pressurized. Both LP and Natural gas hookups are going to be safer than using gasoline.

      Really good point, I thought long and hard and decided just to go gas. I may regret it but will give my thoughts later

    • @TheRamGuy

      The problem with LP and NG is they are not as energy dense and as such the same generator with be rated less on those fuels.

    I can run my 15k BTU AC on my travel trailer with plenty of margin on my Champion inverter generator (2500 watt peak / 1850 running watts) after I installed a Micro Air Easy Start.
    The AC unit pulls 1250 watts (~11 amps) when running and will pull 18.5 amps on startup with the Easy Start installed.
    I tried to run the AC before I installed the Easy Start and it caused the generator stall, so it definitely makes a big difference. The Easy Starts also help extend the life of the AC compressor because it lowers the huge inrush current on start up.

      Any issues running the ac if your converter is also charging the house batteries at the same time? I got the bigger 3500w inverter geny for that reason.

    • @JB_WhoWork
      @JB_WhoWork  2 роки тому +1

      15k AC units need a lot of juice to start the compresssor so it will big down smaller generators 👍🏾

    • @davidy3119
      @davidy3119 2 роки тому +1

      @@Weak_juan No I haven’t had any issues. My converter at most will use 600 watts if the batteries are completely drained, but that usually not the case. I have two Battle Born 100 Ah lithium ion batteries with 380 watts of solar. The solar panels take precedence when charging the batteries due to a higher output voltage and my converter usually does little to charge the batteries if I am above 80% charged. My batteries will actually power the DC system even when connected to shore power unless I go below 80% on my batteries which will be about when the system voltage drops low enough for the converter to start providing DC power to the system.
      I have a 12v compressor fridge which pulls about 110 watts on the DC system when it is actively cooling so I have a pretty constant draw on the batteries.

    For boondocking you can also run two 15amp extension cords to two 15 to 30amp plugs. Then to an RV Y adapter 30 to 50amp and then to your RV. I have no problems running both AC this way. Just have to make sure nothing else is in on those breakers and each extension cord is on a different leg in the circuit box. The Changing Lanes channel did a video about it.

    If you would like to run 2AC units you can install Micro Air Easy starts on your AC units. I have a 2200 Watt Honda generator that runs a 15 ACK unit fine. I installed a 3K Victron Inverter and added Lithium batteries and can run a 15K AC unit for about 3-4 hours straight just on the Inverter with 400 AMP Hours of Lithium batteries. With the Inverter it can boost the incoming AC power, so with the 22oo Watt Honda and the Victron I can run 2 AC units (both 15K) for a minimum of 3-4 hours (and actually much longer because when only 1 AC is running the generator is charging the Battery Bank. Let me know if you want to see this in action (you live near me). I installed all of this myself. I also added solar (but think of that as an additional way to charge the battery bank.) For travelling this is the best for us because when stopping we just use the inverter (don't need the generator unless overnighting and wanting to run AC).
    In my case I was happy to go small with the generator .... it is on a slide in my front bay - easy to take out and use - only weighs 50 lbs. I also installed a plug up front and a transfer switch .... happy to show you what I did.

    The generator is a carbon copy of the Onan 4500 I plan on getting. Does it have a remote to start it?
    By the way, depending on the air conditioners especially some newer ones like the Atwood/Dometic Air Commands, that generator will run more than one. No soft start required.
    They are designed to run 2 13.5 k ac’s on 30 amp service. You can run 1 on a 2000 watt generator.

    Hey JB, i came here from your reccomendation. I like your light cord setup, but if you are mechanically/electrically inclined or else get somone who is, you can do what im doing untill i squeeze onan up front. Im just picking up another locking rv plug and adding it up front and running "parallel" to existing rear plug. Basically tapping into main panel where rear plug feeds to. Then short cord from gen in truck bed to front plug on coach. No messing with dragging/ unloading/loading gen while underway. Just a thought 4 ya brother. Or if ur ever up Erie Pa way, i could set you up.

      @@ronpage101 I have owned higher wattage non inverter generators and for most boondocking or dry dock applications they are too loud. They are also not safe for sensitive electronics plus they are super heavy. There is a reason the inverter models cost more per watt but the advantages are great. They are quieter, burn less fuel, lighter weight, safe for electronics and can be paralleled together.

    As an electrician, I cringed watching this. Usually people buy bigger generators think that solves their issues, and what ends up happening is that they end up having a fire because the wires melted together. The wires have a rating. Exceed that rating and be prepared for a fireworks show. Don't exceed the ratings!

So aside from getting another generator I don’t know what else could be done to help. I’ve read a lot of people saying soft starts on the ACs but that still wouldn’t help with the fact your pulling at or beyond your max amps of the circuit.
