  • One of the most oft-discussed moments in franchise history, the Jimmy Johnson-Jerry Jones fallout that went down in March of 1994 also happens to be one of the most misunderstood. In this video, I deal with a theory that Tim Cowlishaw of the Dallas Morning News has held to for many years concerning the divorce, and dig deep into the forgotten annals of history to show how Cowlishaw's claims are steeped in a misunderstanding of the power structure that Jimmy Johnson had implemented in Dallas during the early 1990s.
Also illuminated in this video are the finest of fine prints found in the original contract agreement between Johnson and Jones, a contractual clause that not only defined their working parameters, but proved to be the bedrock of their divorce.
    Enjoy!

The sad thing is both of them couldn't share the spotlight and really Jimmy was probably going to leave that season or the season after since he never stayed at a place for more than 5 years. It sure as hell gave Jimmy an out and made Jerry the bad guy so Jimmy isn't as innocent as he appears to be. Still, handling the situation is what was the decline of the Cowboys and along with free agency caused the demise of the Cowboys. I know one thing is for certain if Jimmy stayed in 94, the Cowboys don't go down 21-0 to the 49ers after 3 possessions.

Well done. You made a lot of valid points. However, so does Tim Cowlishaw. At the end of the day, I believe both men are equally to blame.

I like to believe Jimmy was eyeing a three peat. No other coach had won three in a row so that might of been a motivating factor to return. Jerra went on to offend Jimmy in public making it easy for Jimmy’s exit.

Jimmy's quote about being "intrigued" by the head coaching job in Jacksonville led to a series of inquiries by several (e.g., Jerry Jones, Norv Turner, sporting press) parties. Once the dust settled, it was clear that Johnson's actions were WRONG at every level and your exclusion of the following FACTS greatly diminishes your credibility as a researcher. A week before the biggest regular season game (e.g., Cowboys at Giants) of the 1993 season, Jaguar owner Wayne Weaver was interested in hiring Cowboy's OC Norv Turner as the future HC of the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars. Weaver contacted Jimmy Johnson and asked him about Turner's qualifications as a head coaching candidate. Well, rather than advocating for Turner, Jimmy put forth his interest in being the head coach of the 1995 Jaguars. Wow.
Weaver decided not to engage with Johnson on that issue and Jimmy returned to Dallas thinking that this discussion would not reach the ears of his boss, Turner, and the sports media. Dallas sportswriter Mike Fisher caught wind of Johnson's meeting with Weaver, he gathered the details of this meeting, and reported those details in an article that infuriated Johnson. The only person that was more pissed off was Jimmy's boss. Jerry Jones reminded the football media that Jimmy signed a 10 year deal and that this was an unnecessary distraction heading into the final regular season game against the Giants. In his time in Dallas, Johnson frequently warned his team about potential distractions, yet he was solely responsible for providing a distraction that could have cost his team home field advantage in the 1993 playoffs.

This is revisionism. Jimmy was going to quit no matter what after the 1993 season. He said as much on an NFLN interview.

It's not surprising that the Cowboys haven't won for a long time. Jerry Jones ruined a good thing. I heard that he would say to Jimmy to talk to him (during ESPN's war room coverage) because he wanted it to look like he was involved, and he also went up to a media member and told them that he made the Charles Haley trade. One of the worst owners in sports history.

all jerry had to do was open the check book after the back to back super win..which did not happen.
