- Lilac Wine - Jeff Buckley's version of this classic song.. Here is a close-up look at this awesome song... I decided to not sing over it, as this would take away from the lesson aspect and I'm not too sure I could even do this justice anyway..!!
So as this is a little difficult for beginners, I suggest you have at least a couple years of playing under your belt to even attempt to play this, that being said you can always learn by watching and picking up various techniques as best you can. Have fun and enjoy..!!
a technically tough song just explained just in 8 minutes, kudos!
I didn't realize how complex the harmony of this song is until I tried to play it. I really improved my hearing while doing it.
Thanks for your help.
I really wish you did the whole Grace album series of tutorials. Awesome. Thank you.
Thanks man, beautiful chords and well explained
Thanks for this really helpful tutorial. First song I've learnt in a while.
Absolutely fantastic work mate!.
(One technicality: I would call the chord at 8:11 an E_flat dim. It doesn't have the 3rd in it. But harmonically what's happening is an E_flat dim to D major resolution. E_flat dim chord is the tritone substitution for A7. So the back bone is essentially a perfect cadence -- A7 to D. And actually last four chords of the song is C to A7 to D to G. Jeff kept the E_flat note on the top instead of the G flat to move the E flat down to D. Sounds perfect)
Lilac wine
took awhile to write the new chords down, but i can play this song thanks to you!
Soo... there's a mistake in the 3rd chord. The correct progression at the beginning is Gmi Eb D7 Ami7b5 D7. Then it changes and it becomes Gmi Eb Ami7b5 D7...
Yeah, it’s really something I realized after I posted this many years ago, always wanted to correct it, but never did get back to it.!?!! Yeah, I invert the Amin.7b5 (moving the b5 from the 6th fret A string up to the octave on the 4th fret of the B string..). 🎶🎶🎸🎶🎶.. maybe I’ll get a correction video up one day to show how I do it.!
thanks for this, but what about that little minor chord he puts in after the D7 -b9 in the first part? the one that falls on the "strange delight"? it sounds like an a-minor of some kind
suslodarov - Yeah - I think I should have listened to this before I posted this it...! I think that chord is A min. 7 b5 - you move up the flat 5 an octave...( i can post this in a video if that is a little too hard to get..?
so that would an Am7 with an F# stuck in there somewhere? i`m not sure it`s worth reloading the excellent video you made
Oh Merci Phil ! Thank You Thank You !
Beautiful sound. Just a quick comment: in the recording the 3rd chord should be D, then Cmin/A, then back to D, resolving to Gmin.
Nice job on the song, would just be easier to learn if you posted all the chords in the corner instead of just a couple. Sounds great though.
Nice much better than anything on ultimate guitar :P just thinking that Dmaj that leads back to the Gm in the opening sequence sounds like it might be a D7 (dominant). thoughts feelings?
thanks. it's a great lesson
@Praffol79 - I did just post this from memory (my mistake!) - The third chord is actually "Amin. 7 flat 5" - It is tricky how Jeff inverts this chord and plays the 'flat 5' one octave lower during the lyric "Was hypnotized by a.." - bar your first finger across the 5th fret and the put you 2nd finger on the 'e-flat' -which is the flat 5 (6th fret - "a" string) play only up to the 'c' note on the "G-string"- then up one octave to the e-flat on the "b" string during the lyric "Strange delight.."
Thanks a lot that's totally awesome!
thank you so much guy, you helped me a lot!!!
Good job! Thank you!
thanks
Yeah...This is likely correct (D7), you can really hear it a bit more clearly at about 36 secs into the studio track (the second time Jeff plays this change..) So I really should have done a better review of this before I recorded this video and posted it..!! I think this is a great cover and I will try to double check next time...;)
Thanks PWGWORKSHOP for the thorough explanation.
When I am gonna be able to meet Praffol79, I would be delighted to listen his impeccable performance
@antaine76 - Yes - I missed the "Amin.7/flat 5" chord..When Buckley sings the lyric "Strange Delight.." He plays this chord with his 2nd finger on the root (5th fret - low "e-string") 3rd finger on the 5th fret of the "D-string" - 4th finger on the 5th fret "G-string & the flat 5 is played using your 1st finger on the 4th fret of the "B-sring"...I hope that helps & this inversion of "Amin.7/flat 5" is used in the second verse at around 30 secs.in..Please read my reply to "Praffol79" for more..
Thank you man!
Great job, thank you very much! =D
Can anyone explain that D minor chord at 05:30 to me, please? I just can't figure it out.
If you haven't already figured it out, the chord is 5th fret on the A string, 3rd fret on the D string, 2nd fret on the G string. You only play those 3 strings, or you can pick those notes individually as an arpeggio.
What kinda pick is that?
wanda James it’s a fender extra heavy
Standard tuning?
Yes, this is in standard tuning..
Great.
Welp I haven't played these chords in a while :P ..I need a chord chart :P
Heads up everyone, this is wrong all over the place. He has mos of the correct chords, but the voicings/fingering are often very different from how Buckley recorded and performed it. Just compare to either of the two live videos on UA-cam to see.
I agree with Antaine76, third chord doesn't sound right...
it is not exactly like that !
