I believe that Kim Il-sung, the founding dictator of North Korea, called it the "people's instrument." He grew up the grandson of a Presbyterian minister, and even played the organ at the families' church in his early years. One of the reasons that Billy Graham was allowed to hold a crusade in North Korea is because his wife, Ruth, went to high school in Pyongyang as the daughter of missionaries to Korea prior to the division of the country by the US.

This actually is a very beautiful national anthem, and its words are almost identical to the national anthem of South Korea--there are no political comments in the national anthem, just pride in the beauty and the 5000 year history of the Korean nation.

Yes, it's an exception in North Korean music, because many songs are dedicated to either the leaders and the Workers' Party or extreme nationalism. On the contrary, this anthem beautifully describes the Korean nation. Also, both the national anthems of North and South Korea mention Mt. Baekdu, which is a mountain that is sacred to all Koreans, it is believed in Korean mythology that the first Korean kingdom originated from there...

also it sounds a lot better acoustically when not actually sung since the lyrics and full pompous orchestra thing kind washes out the melody itself...
