    The official name for the Irish language, in Article 8 of Constitution of Ireland, is "Irish". The word "Gaeilge" is the Irish word for "Irish", just as "Deutsch" is the German word for German. But calling the language "Gaelic"in English is like always saying "Deutsch" instead of "German", or even worse, calling it "Dutch". The book "Teach Yourself Gaelic" will teach you Scottish Gaelic. To learn Irish, ou need the book "Teach Yourself Irish".

    “Gaelic” is not the “official name for the Irish language”. You are doing a disservice to Scottish Gaelic by making no mention of it here, and reducing “Gaelic” to only mean the Irish language. This is simply wrong, I’m not sure what the point of this oversimplified video was. Saying “it can also refer to aspects of Irish and Scottish culture” is not accurate. Honestly, what was the purpose of this video?

    It's not the official name for the Irish language. The official name is Irish.

      @@tommercury3349 You could not even get the word correct .Gaeilge , is the language , or Irish . Gaeltacht is the name for an Irish speaking part of Ireland . The North of Ireland is not recognized as Gaeltacht , although the language was preserved by those from the north . When 9 counties , making old Ulster became 6 , we started reeducating via Donegal . We all speak the Ulster dialect .

    A Gael is someone from a Gaelic speaking community. A Celt is someone from a Celtic speaking community. Most Irish are neither of these.😅

      you dont have to speak a goidelic language to be considered a gael, nor do you have to speak a celtic language to be considered a celt. language and ethnicity are not the same.

      @@debhin Its far and away the most defining characteristic. The use of the word Gael has been applied romantically in all kinds of innacurate ways down the years to describe enthusiasts of the culture or of Irish Gaelic sport. Calling oneself a Gael just because they like the culture is not enough in itself and akin to anyone calling themselves a Native American because they love the culture. Celtic genetics has become a defunct notion as the genes of the current Celtic regions are largely similar to Basque genetics which doesnt imply a shared culture. What distinguishes a Gaelic Scot from a Lowland Scot ? Language mostly. There is an expiry date on being a Celt when the day to day use of the language and traditions is replaced by English or French and their associated culture.

      @@michaelroche6181 "Calling oneself a Gael just because they like the culture is not enough in itself and akin to anyone calling themselves a Native American because they love the culture." that is absolutely ludicrous and I never once suggested that. A modern-day Gael is a descendant of the Celtic tribe known as the Gaels, Goidels, or Scotii.

    • @michaelroche6181
      @michaelroche6181 4 місяці тому

      @@debhin It is ludicrous and how many want to redefine Gael. If they had one ggg parent they are adament that they are Celtic and it is being used in a racist context now by both people in Ireland and abroad. The greater majority of the present day Gaels are descended from the Goedilic tribes despite a certain amount of admixture of Norman and English blood in some areas. There also has been a continuity of Gaelic culture in Gaeltacht communities over millenia that is no longer true of Galltacht areas.

    Celtic: Ireland, Wales, Scotland, parts of France.
    Gaelic: Irish language; Also be referred to Irish and Scottish culture.
