Preacher was great, but Custer was superpowered and the hero, so I wouldn't put it on this list. Again, only because of a technicality. Preacher is outstanding.

I assume because Saga is on the list. Don't want doubles of the same writer and of the two Saga is the better (though I love Y as well, Brian K. Vaughan is a god).

Losing Darwynn Cooke so young was a true tragedy for comics.
He wasn't THAT young but it was way too soon. He was even planning another Parker book around the time he died.
@@johnathonhaney8291 I know. I try not to think about that. I suppose I think of him as young because there were so many potential years ahead of him. Still, there are worse legacies to leave behind.

Scalped was amazing and felt like watching an AMC series like Breaking Bad. It is so good.
Really surprised not to see The Walking Dead here since that's one of the biggest comic series with no superheroes; but thanks to the series there's not a lot of people that don't know about it so I can understand why it isn't here

No Tintin? Asterix? Carl Barks' Duck comics? Bone? Blacksad? Etc.? I mean, sure, there are definitely some entries on this list which fully deserve to be there, but it seems to me that, considering the topic, this list is tilted far too much in favor of more recent comics, while ignoring some legitimate classics.
One of my favorite under rated comics is "Bedlam". Its about a super serial killer who gets lobotomized in a way that wont allow him to do bad (if I recall exactly) but he uses his deranged history to solve brutal murders
In that vein, you might like the Warren Ellis series Fell.
I love superheroes, but it's refreshing to know about other comics that aren't in the superhero genre.

Sandman has actual DC supers in it, Doctor Destiny has Morpheus' Dreamstone and Lyta Hall (aka Fury from Infinity Inc and Sandman/Dr Fate's wife) is a major character....as is her son...
Yyyeah, but they're not doing superhero things, and they're not the focus of the story. Dr. Destiny is pretty much done after the diner, and Lyta Hall...well...isn't doing anything superhero-ish. Really, except for the bit of backstory you get when she's introduced, you wouldn't know she's an actual superhero; you could cut that backstory out and it wouldn't change the Sandman story.
@@zenfrodo but still still supers! and the story has a direct impact on the DC universe so.....and YOU might not know she's a superhero but those of us that remember at one time she was Wonder Woman's bloody daughter do (her name being Hippolyta Trevor) and by your logic Gaiman could have used any character to be in her place.....but he chose to use an established hero....also her backstory connects her to the kindly ones/furies, and they were just the main ones I mentioned.....

My favorite is kinda unusual and some will probably consider it to be a bit childish.
But I can absolutely recommend everyone to read "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck". Especially if you already read some of his or Donald Comics as a Child or Teen. Yes it has some of the typical ridiculous and kinda childish segments that you would expect from a Comic like that, but it tells his life through a compelling Story with lots of emotions and character development.
Imo this is an absolute must read and the story perfectly captures one of the most Iconic Comic Book characters of all time

Don Rosa's art style is superb as well.
For me the heroes are the comic book artists and writers...even though comic book industry is struggling on making a profit they still make comics because of love and passion for their craft...they are the real heroes imo

Good list, but I would've liked some Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan or Injection), Jeff Lamire (Gideon Falls, Royal City, Descender), Rick Remender (Deadly Class or Black Science) and maybe Sex Criminals, Chew, Monstress and Ice Cream Man.
I need to catch up with Injection. Global Frequency should be on this list though.

Sooooooo many more titles you could have included; Give Me Liberty, V For Vendetta, From Hell, Clean Room... There are dozens of 'em that don't include any spandex/armoured/cape-wearing do-gooders.
Fables was good, up until the arcs after The Emperor was overthrown. The moment you get to the Jack crossover, the series falls apart and suffers from an incredibly rushed ending.
You...left...out...ELFQUEST???!!?? The independent comic that basically opened up the entire indy field in comics and was THE ur-example of an engrossing, intelligent comic that didn't ...and still doesn't...rely on superheroes??? Shame on you! You also left out Bone, from Jeff Smith, another indie pioneer.

What Your Top 15 Indie Comics Need Have A Netflix/Amazon Prime Video
One of the texts I had to study in high school was Maus, and it was the first time I enjoyed the content I was reading as a part of my study. It's the only text I re-read after all of the work relating to the book was over, if you haven't checked it out I would highly suggest it
had to do a double-take at Sandman being that low on the list, but won be back with Maus being at the top
I would say walking dead deserves to be in the top 5 as it has a start middle and end which are all class
Obscure honorable mention: Skreemer-set in a post apocalyptic U.S. it follows the rise and fall of a gangster/warlord and the parrallell story of a regular family trying to survive.

Sandman Spoilers (it’s over 20 years old but still...)
The first arc features Martian Manhunter, Doctor Destiny and Golden Age Sandman. Brilliant series, but had to be propped up by superheroes when it first started and Darkseid is at the funeral, so it persisted throughout
No superheros but supernatural is fine? Regardless, I put forth Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore as one of the best non-superhero oriented comic books out there.

Lots of supers in L&R.
There's no real Super heroes in Love and rockets, it's all about the loves and lives of a small border town. This comic is groundbreaking. One of the best things ever to be put on paper.

Seriously. In your list only Sin City and Mouse are well-recognised non-superhero brands. The rest is niche.
What about Asterix? What About Lucky Luke? What about Smurfs? What about Thorgal, Yans, Shninkel, Valerian, Tintin?
What about One Piece, Dragonball and a range of well-recognised and well-selling Japanese comics? "Manga" is just a foreign word for "comic book", doesn't mean that it's not a visual novel.

But be it manga, graphic novel, strips, or the classic "comic book", it's all part of the comics medium, so I feel it should have a place on this list.
