I dont know if they did a baseline off screen first, but as early as the first question, they guy monitoring seemed to be reading far too into things. Continuing to discuss the question and answer after can elicit different feelings, regardless of the truth. A reaction after further conversation doesn't mean he was questioning his answer, but rather the conversation that was occurring. Like, trying to say I am lying after it was shown I wasn't would probably cause an internal reaction for sure. The whole test was definitely not properly administered.

These lie detectors aren't reliable.
There is no concrete physiological marker for lying or deception. A polygraph can only be used properly as an intimidation tactic and nothing else. If it works, it does by pressuring the truth out of the person under the gun.
@@xTrystthey also don’t use them much anymore because it is easy to induce a false confession after you tell someone you have “proof” they are lying and the punishment will be worse if they don’t “confess”
@@chasehorton2324 they also don't use them much anymore because they're inadmissible in court, and its likely that using them at all is a huge weakness in terms of actually building a case against a suspect.

Unfortunately, that's not exactly how things are. Just like Hikaru, Levy is a Monarch Slave, and many things have been happening in the chess world (including from what I can tell, his road to GM and stuff that happens within it) to keep my interest up in chess, or otherwise manipulate (or influence) me. At least, that's how it's been looking primarily, so far.

With a friend like Hikaru you do not need foes.
There is a gentler clarity to his voice and demeanor when he's s telling the truth. When he's lying, he compensates with a more pointed stare and tone. It's most probable that he will simply lie all the way when caught in a stressful interrogation. If you want him to be truthful, put him in a more relaxed none confrontational objective setting where he doesn't feel trapped.
He lied in the crying question, he already said multiple times on stream that he did in fact cry after a loss.
The lie detector man is great during these. You can tell he is really invested. Makes it even more entertaining.
That should be called a truth detector.
It should be a called a trash detector. It just doesn't work if someone capable is consciously trying to beat it.

Don’t read into what the guy running the test says. They are pseudoscience and it’s never actually all that clear if someone is trying to cheat the test, or if that’s how they normally are.

Problem is lie detectors work of base level. U can be a bad liar and still fool a test. As long as u just pump up your heartrate with breathing exercises before every question its really hard to see where the true false line is. Which is why the guy instantly said he was trying to cheat. Its very noticeable. Doesnt mean u can control facial expressions etc.

I believe when Hikaru says he does not lie, he means he does not misrepresent facts to manipulate others. But we all lie to ourselves, sometimes to the point we give automatic responses to things we are ashamed of. This is more of a deep rooted and personal problem, whereas lying to manipulate others is more nefarious.

Levy's mentality has shifted quite a bit since his return to competitve play and training. Been watching him for quite some time now, and he has grown. He will fall into some old habits every now and then, but he is much calmer in the late middle game than he used to be. As a couple others have said, I believe he will get the norms, but the rating might be tough.
GM or not, he has definitely upleveled his game, which is inspiring.
Some of these questions he didn’t need to lie about.
