My mom was pregnant with me when this song was popular and played on the radio a lot back in 1956. My parents named me Cynthia but they always called me Cindy.

One of my favorite versions of this song. I am a proud Navy brat. My father and favorite uncle were career officers in the U.S. Navy, and those formal white uniforms to me are the best in all of the armed services. The message of the song is also very meaningful to those who serve. The girl I left behind is such a common theme, because we humans go to war, and until very recently, the men left their women, and too many never returned. We romanticize war, even now. We need to stop that, and to eschew ideologies, political or religious or whatever, that make us want to kill each other. In the end, we are all human, all capable of loving each other, and that is what should define us. Love, not hate. Always and forever.

I remember Tony Brent when he was invited to sing at the Bowring Institute in Bangalore-India, He was such a great hit with the girls, they were screaming and wanting him to keep on singing.

as an anglo myself, I feel that this wonderful singer didn't get the accolade due to him. pity he died so young.......he puts Englebert Humperdinck in the shade (another anglo, in spite of what you might have read!)

Yes, it's curious so many Anglos who've made good in the world of show business are in denial about their roots. I read up on Wikipedia about E.H. (aka Arnold Dorsey) and his claim is he's 100% British. Saddest of all though has to be Merle Oberon an Anglo from Calcutta -- very famous Hollywood actress in the 40s. She never publicly admitted her mother -- who was very much present with her during her hay-day -- being her own... she preferred to put out the story that her mother -- who was of darker complexion -- was in fact her servant!

Can't deny, he was a great singer. Famous throughout India in the 50s, thanks to good old Radio Ceylon. You're quite right about not being recognised as he ought to have been... unfortunately in those days artists of Indian origin (Anglo-Indians were looked on no differently) weren't given the same opportunities as indigenous or American artists. I suppose that's the reason they tried to conceal their backgrounds. I, for one, have great memories of him and his songs.
