      LOL, glad you're enjoying the catalog of projects, and as you may notice, I keep tweaking ideas and my processes. Sometimes I think I know the best way, then I do it differently anyhow.
      Enjoy the projects (again) and let me know if you have any ideas or questions, I'll try to help if possible.
      Oh, when asking a question, start a new comment, as I don't get notified when comments are added to an existing string. So I may never see an add-on in an existing string of comments. Well, that's confusing.

    Hello,
    Learning a lot from your videos. I have not started my first guitar, but having built a canoe, I was rooting for you when you looked at laminating the back.
    The scale is much different - you would not have the danger of clamps as flying projectiles as I did. You are giving me a lot of ideas for that first build. Keep pushing the boundaries.

      @theNextProject  8 місяців тому

      Ric, thanks for watching!
      WOW, you built a canoe? That's impressive, very cool!
      I have laminated a few guitars now, typically using the vacuum bag, but have also used other clamping processes with good luck.
      Flying clamps, that sounds exciting, hope no damage nor injury followed. Things do happen, don't they.
      I'm always trying things, some work, some need adjustment... all good.
      Good luck with your projects, and upcoming guitar build ( you can do it ).

    My first build was the TE kit from HB. I did the strat cuts just like you and made a wooden pickguard with veneer.
    I'm still playing this guitar very often. It is wonderful for me, to see this video!
    The technical fixes necessary in my build were: tuners, roller string trees, bridge.
    Also changed the PUs. Elektronic, body and neck was quite good.
    Only disadvantage: It is heavy.
    What I would do better next time: No string through mod.

    • @theNextProject
      @theNextProject  10 місяців тому +2

      Moskito, thanks for watching.
      Ah yes the TE kits, those are a lot of fun too. A great starting point to build what you want, as it sounds like you did!
      Looks like you added/replaced all the right things too, made it a brute of a guitar - great project!
      I am surprised to hear that it's heavy. Maybe the factory uses what ever wood they can find, as the TE kit I had a couple years back was pretty light - then I cut it up : |
      I hear ya on the string through. Not sure I would bother with it in the future either, but it was a good learning exercise.

      @@theNextProject They don't tell, which wood they use, so I really guess it differs. Just hope mine was dry enough... :o
      Your video was great for me as finally I saw, how to easily put veneer on an uneven surface. I will surely use your example.
      I had to give my board away over night to a professional with a press.
      Well, I will never reach your detail level in the builds... but that does 't matter. I learn a lot from your vids!

    • @theNextProject
      @theNextProject  10 місяців тому +1

      So true, they probably don't know what wood the body will be on any given day. Use what they have which may vary often.
      Glad the videos are helping, and giving some ideas.
      Veneer work is still something I'm slowly learning. Not saying that Titebond is the best option, but it is FAST. One problem I have with titebond is, if you use too much glue, it may/will wick through the veneer and cause stain/color issues. Too little and there may be adhesion deficiencies. I've also used Titebond Cold Press glue which is more suited to this kinda work, as it is less prone to wicking through and dries a little slower - giving more time to get everything in place. I also used UF (urea formaldehyde ) resin glue, which is a really kick-ass glue for this type of work, other than the resin powder potentially being toxic, and the powder having a short shelf-life. Ugh!
      Oh well, as long as we have fun and can keep from throwing the project out the window. It's all good, lol.

    • @moskitoh2651
      @moskitoh2651 10 місяців тому +1

      @@theNextProject My no name wood glue sucked through and even fixed some of the paper, which was there to not get the glue on the press to the veneer.
      But with some sandpaper, everything was fixed quickly.
      If the veneer is thick enough, this would be my preferred solution.
      I really love the easiest wood glue, as if you really press the wood together and wait long enough it seems to hold much better, than the wood itself. And before it dries, water on some cotton is enough to remove, what was too much.

    Well, my TE-20 is only modified a little. Mostly, it's replaced electronics and new pups, I also replaced the bridge saddles with compensated ones. And I drilled some holes for a different bridge-plate, that I couldn't use. Now the original plate hides these holes. And my TE-20 is in CAR.
    I have a four-way-switch to get both pups in series and a P/P to inverse the polarity of the neck-pup. The neck-pup came with two wires, which meant, I had to solder on a third wire, to ground the cap of that pup.
    My online-buddy Old Guitarhand (he has a small, German channel) didn't know WHY he needed a neck pup with three wires, he just took one that already had them. The reason is pretty easy, when the cap is wired to the ground of the coil, you just can't pup both pups in series. Because you have to connect the plus of the bridge-pup with the ground of the coil of the neck-pup. But if that is connected to the ground of the housings of the pots, you won't have a signal. So you have to tear apart the ground of the coil, which will be connected to the switch, and the ground of the cap, which still be connected to the housings of the pot. Via the switch, the ground of the coil will still be connected to the ground of the electronics in the normal position, but not in the series position.
    And now you can also invert the polarity of the coil. But that only gives a cool sound if both pups a switched in series, in parallel, the sound is too thin and too silent. If no side is connected to the cap, it doesn't matter which side you call ground, but it does matter with the sound and hum cancelling, when both pups sound together.

    • @theNextProject
      @theNextProject  10 місяців тому +1

      Achim, good to hear from you and thanks for watching!
      "my TE-20 is in CAR", sorry man I'm not sure what that is: Corrective Action Required, Commercial and Residential, Colt Automatic Rifle. ?
      I'm sure your TE-20 is probably doing great, you seem to work through your projects thoroughly.
      I was thinking of a 4-way upgrade for this project, have the switch and new pots. Let me know your thoughts and reactions on that mod - I may do that here! Do you like the sound options that you have built in?
      (thanks in advance for the process write up, good for me and others who read it!!!).
      Very cool.
      Thanks again, be safe and take care my friend!

    • @achimdg6335
      @achimdg6335 10 місяців тому +1

      Candy Apple Red, I actually hoped to confuse you.
      And yes, I like the extra sounds, actually, two of them, but you automatically get the third one. This inverted polarity gives you the famed, quaky out of phase sounds, I bet you guessed that. But it is not really out of phase, it's just the inverted polarity. And in series, this really has a unique, really cool sound. But in parallel, the out of phase sound is too thin for my taste. And the normal in-series-sound is like a humbucker with coils wide apart. It's got more power than the parallel sound.
      When you pull the P/P in the neck-pup-alone-position, the sound remains the same

      LOL, missing accomplished!
      Candy Apple Red, very nice!
      Oh, a P/P is in there too, is that with a 4-way switch, or in place of a 4-way while using a 3-way... I'll have to re-read your earlier message. The answer is probably in there.
      I may ask for a wiring diagram, sounds like a good upgrade for this guitar... Thanks!

    • @achimdg6335
      @achimdg6335 10 місяців тому +1

      4-way-lever-switch for in series in the fourth position, wound the wiring on the interwebs, and P/P for inverted polarity of the coil. Pretty easy how to invert polarity. It's the six connectors in two rows of three. The signal-plus and the signal-ground go to the top two connectors, crossed wires to the bottom connectors, and the signal comes out of the middle connectors. From there, the signal-wires go to the 4-way-switch. The third wire from the neck-pup, that's the one that grounds the cap, goes directly to the ground of the electronics. But that's described in the wiring diagram.
      A P/P by CTS looks different, it has connectors C1 and C2, I guess C stands center, and connectors 1-4. And signal-plus and signal-ground should come out of C1 and C2. With your multimeter you find out, how they are connected in up- and down-position.

    I own a Fender Strat that has a pretty decent gap between the neck and body and it rings like a bell and is very resonant. IMO, the most important interface is the four screws that hold them both together.

      I completely agree, the mating surface the neck mounts down to, I also want the neck to butt up against a good surface at the heel. But the 4-screw surface is primary for sure. The sides don't even need to be there, so loose is good by me.

      Thickness sander project... yes and no. Or maybe, yes, but it's a few projects out.
      The thickness sander you've seen me using has been working great. It was originally a "prototype", but it's worked so well, I haven't bothered making a version 2, yet.
      The only issues I can say it currently has are as follows:
      1. No autofeed belt table system (working on that idea)
      2. More power - maybe?
      3. The operator (me)
      So for now, I just keep using it, knowing how I have to proceed when sanding.
      If/when an auto feed table is added, I would likely also go to a higher HP motor.
      There is a plan to do so, and hopefully it will happen in '24.
      Thanks for hangin' with me during the projects and thanks for asking about the drum sander. You're not alone in that request, so I may push the idea up the ladder a bit.

    I would love to know the tecnique the factories use for veneers over comfort cuts as they seem to get it right every time.
    I bought a couple of TE-62 models, I completely replaced all the parts on of them and kept the other as original, I am buying a TE-20 to mod and will try the old parts off the TE-62 as they are pretty good, I might change the bridge pickup as I want a Tele with a hot bridge pickup, and I will replace the nut with a Tusq XL and Tusq string trees.

    Hi, Robert here, how are you doing ?
    This re-mod project is very interesting, what a good idea ! Do you already have an idea of the price you'll sell it off ?
    Another question, if you had to clean up and nourish the fretboard would you do that before or after the fret dress and why ?
    Thanks in advance for your answers :) and thank you for your nice videos.
    Take care !
    Robert.

      Robert, thanks for watching!
      I hope this project series will be interesting, enjoyable and fun.
      The price is a great question, and I will likely be asking for just the sum of all the parts.
      Not that there is anything wrong with budget guitars, but I do realize that a brand name carries a lot of weight/value. This goes both ways.
      Currently I probably have $400 invested, so when it's finished probably be around $500.
      A lot of people will spit their coffee at that, and I understand.
      Funny thing though, it should really be about the guitar, not the brand.
      As for the fretboard, great question!
      The fretboard is in really good condition, just a few finger print smudges mainly, no real wear.
      It will get a polish after the remainder of the neck gets refreshed. I've shinned up fingerboards early on before, only to have grubby fingerprints and smudges to re-clean later.
      My current plan (which may change), is to finish off the back of the neck/headstock, then do a final clean and polish on the entire neck and fretboard. Probably right before I reinstall the tuners.
      Glad to hear you are enjoying the videos.
      Be safe and take care!

      OH, I forgot to add that info to the description... be right back.... done.
      Here's the info I failed to share -
      Ebay Seller: Thin Wood and Old Tools

      Thanks for the heads-up on the description...the info has been added there too.
      It appears my brain called it a day at midnight...body kept moving, but dropped the ball on a few things it seems.
      Hope the link helps, take care!

    Great vid. I have a Harley Benton les Paul type guitar that I want to do similar to as a project, this is so helpful. I'm planning a fabric top but cant quite figure out what to do with it sitting proud of the bindings....any advice gratefully received

      Philip, tha ks for watching!
      Sounds like you've got a great project started. Fabric top will be cool, I had considered doing that on this tele, but maybe the next one, idk.
      Fabric to binding edge. Hmm, if yo can get new binding, you could remove the existing binding, add your top, trim and rebind... A bit of work, especially if you haven't done it before.
      You could just tape off the edge of the existing binding, add your new fabric top, get it all glued and a solid initial topcoat added, then gently trim a slight reveal-bevel in the fabric top. Just enough to evenly expose a sliver of the binding. Then topcoat the entire body...
      Sorry l, that's pretty vague.
      If something else comes to mind I'll repost.
      Keep me posted as you work on your project.
      Be safe and have fun!

      The color question. I was hoping nobody would ask, but it appears I can't hid from it.
      I'm thinking a multi-shade emerald green burst into solid color sides. The back may mimic this as well.
      Or, a multi-shade ocean blue... Or, a Tobacco burst, or...hmm.
      At this moment, I had hoped to match the main body color to the solid color edge painting, similar to what I did on the Red Strat style guitar recently. The problem is, I don't have Greens and Blues for paint on hand, and buying a little paint to do this kind of full color work is outta-budget for this guitar... SO, I will surprise us all (myself included), as we continue the Next Project.
      Sorry for the vague uncertainty, it's how I roll.
      Hope you are doing well, be safe and take care!
