When Pertile and Martinelli sang,there seemed to be a demand or urgency for an artist to be sufficiently heard in the theater.Even lyric voices like Schipa,Tagliavini and Gigli carried well in the theater.Today we perhaps have the help of modern technology at times to help voices along in live performances as well as studio recordings.Times have changed

Cecchele was clearly better than Martinelli or Pertile. But they were the best in the Italian dramatic tenor fach on their continents at their time. During Ceechele's time we had jet planes and Domingo. We also had TV and full length recordings too. When Domingo and Cecchele sang there were twice as many people on earth as when Pertile and Martinelli sang but no more opera houses. We also had Giacomini, Barioni and Martinucci. We had an embassassment of riches among Italian dramatic tenors.
.AP&GM had a wider repertoire and therefore more signature roles than Cecchele.Pertile had the ability to sing bel canto using mezza voce often and caressing the music.His interpretations were impeccable.Martinelli started his career with some lyric roles and even sang William Tell.GM had a great hi C and his voice was of stentorian nature.He sang at the Met for over 30 years and the public loved him.Merli was also around at the time as was Zenatello' over 400 performances of Otello"Continued.
He should have been one of the reigning tenors of his time. He is truly outstanding!!!
