Dude you are going to love their catalog. Music, lyrics and composition. They have no genre. I guarantee you will become a Steely Dan fan for sure. You have heard many of their songs. Don't be hesitant,go down the rabbit hole, you will love it!!!❤😊
The guitar effect is done with a talk box (the best users in the past - Peter Frampton, David Gilmour, Joe Walsh). The recording was done by Dean Parks, with the effects added later by Walter Becker. This is one of my absolute SD favorites.
You can never go wrong with Steely Dan. These guys are in a class by themselves. Their production is exquisite and their songs are interesting in so many ways. This song is one of my favorites and doesn’t get the attention I feel it deserves. Thanks for choosing it. Great reaction. 🌺✌️
What I love about Steely Dan is all the different musical styles they incorporate in their sound. Just like all the great bands, you have to have your own sound. Great band, good reaction/analysis, peace.
You absolutely must do a deep dive on this album, SD's finest in my opinion. Every song unique, masterfully written and expertly performed. This song is a great example: funky, gritty groove with Fagen's perfect vocals and esoteric lyrics.
He shouts She bites is my fav line in the song The fact that they get studio musicians on their albums give them an elite sound Cause if u get called to play with them you gonna give your best
Your reaction method is really cool. I like the way you read the explanation of the song mixed with your comments. Most of the explanation is new to me, and interesting.
Only Steely Dan could come up with a song about drinking Zombies from a Coconut Shell and the travails of a spoiled young woman acting on her father's advice for a quick divorce in Haiti to end her unhappy, crazy marriage. Donald Fagen's lyrics are always a fever dream of images. Steely Dan is a genre of its own.
Dean Parks played lead guitar and Walter altered it with a talk box to create this humourous, reggae piece which to me is unlike anything the Dan had created to this point. My take on the song is the reference to Papa which I allude to Francois Duvalier, the president of Haiti who was also known as 'Papa Doc'. Quicky divorces could be obtained in Carribean countries, aka Haiti, and many people ventured there to do just that.
@@debbiechang5781 Thank you Debbie....it helps if you've been a Steely Dan fan from the start and seen them in concert. Enjoy your exploration of the Dan!

One of the reasons Steely Dan is in my top 5!

This one and Green Earrings- great stuff!

Steely Dan definitely had great music
Steely Dan is great. They're so unique. Combination of Soul/Funk/ and Jazz. They were just different, and such great lyrics.
It also sure sounds to me like he's playing through a Wah pedal in addition to the talkbox. Totally funky song though, love it.
They are one of a kind! Always get the very best musicians to record the amazing music they write. There are no bad Steely Dan songs!!
Great song, fantastic lyrics!
LOVE this song.

Really love Fagens vocals in this one, man he's belting it out for real.
Always one of my favorite songs from them. Thanks for sharing this!!
Yes, that was a guitar run through a voice box, made famous by Peter Frampton (Do You Feel Like We Do) and Joe Walsh (Rocky Mountain Way)
Also a real master of the voice-box - David Gilmour. Slightly less talented, but pretty good - Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi) and Mick Mars (Motley Crue).

Awesome as always. They just have that special sound that gives us images of the story !
He shouts She bites is my fav line in the song The fact that they get studio musicians on their albums give them an elite sound Cause if u get called to play with them you gonna give your best
i bought this album on the basis of this song right after i heard it for the first time. lucky for me, the entire album was fantastic.

Roger Troutman with the funk group, Zapp, also used the talk box. Check out the classic song, More Bounce to the Ounce. Great stuff!

Interesting take, papa is usually taken to refer to Papa Doc Duvalier by a lot of commenters but I think yours is closer to the plot of the story.
Peter Frampton and Joe Walsh used it, it's called a talk box.
Richie Sambora too

Thanks for that bit of trivia. I love learning so many little details about the songs I love from people more knowledgeable than me. 😁

That was 🔥🔥🔥
....the guitar had an effect called a 'talk box'....
My second favorite band
How did they get their name? Google the story behind Steely Dan's name
That talk box sounds a lot like what my granddad used to play, he called it a Jew's harp, but that's not cool, the better term is a mouth organ.
The Fez
Bodhisattva
Peg
Josie
Did you say "Haitia"? C'mon.
