    Gus is the first of the two assassins to mention 'lighting the kettle' (at 7.47), in the conversation that follows, he denies ever hearing the expression. Personally, I thing the weirdness and humour of the gas/kettle exchange would lose nothing if that first line by Gus was to be changed. Very little of the dialogue in a Pinter play ever makes sense in a conventional way, it's more like the verbal equivalent of a Dali painting.
