  • BBC Songs Of Praise from Blackpool Tower Ballroom with Phil Kelsall and the Tower Wurlitzer organ in some shots. 15/11/1992. Found on an old broken VHS video tape Not the best quality after repair sadly but interesting to see the Tower Ballroom and Wurlitzer Organ put to another use. This went out on Sunday evening the 15th November 1992. An age before we had UA-cam or the Internet or could even send a text on a mobile phone! When families still all sat around the one TV in the house to watch such programmes . Real Sunday night fair for so many years happy days.

Have been to Blackpool Tower Ballroom three times in my life, from overseas, to see a few people saunter around the dance floor to the strains of the Wurlitzer. This video, by comparison shows a capacity gathering raising songs of praise to the roof with full gladness and power. When I look at all those faces, I understand who puts the "Great" in Britain, my country of birth. Thank you so much for posting this.

Thanks for the upload of this. I was on stage playing trombone in the college big band so quite a thing to see this again after all these years! I have less hair these days but still have that same trombone. Love that our conductor John Askew managed to get ahead of Phil Kelsall in the credits…he would have enjoyed that! A hell of a lot of work went into producing this.

Thanks, lovely to know you were there playing the trombone. It was super this was done in the Tower Ballroom. And well let's be honest your conductor was leading a band! After all, quite right he should have come before Phil Kelsall but it's amazing how people do get miffed by who gets on these TV credits and where they come in the credits. But a super show great band! Thanks for your super comment. Kev.

Yes, always fun to see what goes with what. It's the words that make it a hymn, not necessarily the music.

Sorry for the late reply but to be honest I would not have a clue where you might obtain that from I have asked a few people who also drew a blank on this, so sorry. All the best Kev.

Thanks, Gordon. Yes, I thought this was an interesting programme I'm not a religious man but back then and many years prior I use to watch BBC Song Of Praise and very much grew up with it in the 1960s and 70s. Who remembers such presenters on Songs Of Praise as Geoffrey Wheeler, Clif Michelmore, Michael Barratt, Sir Harry Secombe, Just a name a few from the past. The first-ever BBC Songs Of Praise went out in October 1961.

PS. I also forgot to say that Cinema organist Dudley Savage also presented editions of Songs of Praise when the programme was hosted in Plymouth or Devon. Kev.

@@BramleyProductions I never realised that Harry Seacombe presented SoP. I remember when I was a kid, he had a program on the 'other side' called Highway which was on around the same time on a Sunday evening

@@Angus2020 Hi, I reached checked the listing of SOP presenters, and it seems Harry Secombe presented a few celebrity versions of SOP in the late 1990s. I assume after his Highway ITV Network Sunday evening Regligoius show had ended. He may well have done some earlier sows as well in the late 1960s. Two other names that have done SOP presenting are Clif Richard who did a few SOP in the late 1960s and 70s also Bobby Ball of Cannon & Ball fame did a show in the 1990s! Highway was one of my dear old Nan's favourite TV programmes with as you say Harry Secombe presenting that for the ITV network in the day when there had to be a certain amount of religious content broadcast on Sunday TV. Those days are long gone happy memories thanks Kev.

Thanks to you I now know what it's called...
      ...Highway💞
I couldn't remember the title. I just knew that it was Harry Secombe on ITV.
They had on our New Testament Church of GOD from all over Great Britain and Dorothy Allen sang two hymns full of HOLY GHOST and Fire🔥
I recognized a lot of worshippers. Absolutely wonderful
