Tuomas wrote the song when his Father passed. I feel the emotion as my mother passed at 90 years old in 2023. My father passed many years earlier. I can't listen to Lanterlight without tears rolling down my cheeks! Absolutely one of Tuomas' masterpieces. Thank you for your insight!!!
I'm 73 and I am the last man standing in my family. So Lantern Light runs deep, cuts deep. I understand the loss, yet I still live with hope and intent. Nevertheless, Floor's voice and this composition is akin to an emotional depth charge to the heart. There is a tenderness and vulnerability there that I have not heard before, and it just breaks you. And her face, good Lord, her beautiful face so expressive and adorned with nothing save her heart and soul just melts me to my core. The poetry of this song is also heart-rendingly exquisite. It is a poem, a prayer, an elegy. Listen to it. Just listen to it. Tuomas’ poetry can easily stand alone. Some of you get it. Some of you don't. I do, and that's all that matters. Kiitos to all of you in Nightwish for delivering such epic and emotional story telling.
Thank you for these words. I couldn’t agree more. Listening to Yesterwynde is a journey to the depth of one’s soul and Lanternlight is all that you said. Before I listened to the album, I read all the lyrics and the multilayered poetry is exquisite. Tuomas is a gifted poet as he is a gifted composer and musician. Nightwish is a gift to many but especially to those who appreciate its depth on many levels. Kitos to Tuomas and Nightwish, to Floor, Troy, Empuu, Kai and Jukka. And all the very best wishes to you :-)
Lantern Light is the best song this 63 year old man has ever heard. It must be over 100 times by now and the feeling this song gives me is truly indescribable but soul touching
I can't believe that after almost 30 years of being active, Nightwish casually drops possibly their best album yet. They are getting better and better. I am in love with this album.
Lanternlight... man, that feels like a song that was 28 years in the making for Tuomas to achieve. So many bombastic pieces from power metal to epic film score. And here we are with such a patient, mature and moving piece.
Not many bands would put out a single like Lanternlight. Its slow, simple, no autotune, emotionally raw. Cant think of the last time a song like that was released by a major band.,
I know I'm late to the party here, but Lanternlight has become not only one of my favorite Nightwish songs, but one of my favorite pieces of music ever. My parents both died when i was relatively young (dad when i was 10, mom when i was 28), and i miss them terribly but am so grateful to have had them. Lanternlight brings it all back to me, my wonderful parents and the incredible memories i have of them, as well as the grief that still presses in on me. Thank you for your reaction, to both songs. The whole album is just spectacular, though, and you should really react to the whole thing.

When I purchased the album I was happily surprised to find that all of the songs are also released as "just" the orchestral music. On a side note, Floor sang her parts six weeks after giving birth. The guys worked around her having to do all the baby stuff that moms do ..
@@doubleohdutch2108 That has nothing to do with Floor having a newborn to deal with though. Tuomas wanted the vocals in some songs to be just one of the instruments. It is different from what we are used to hearing.
@@tanjanikola9489 How do you know that? Did he mention this in an interview? My home studio is obviously not as good as Abbey Road. The same thing happened during the pandemic 4 years back. @@doubleohdutch2108 This has been mentioned by various people (quoting Tuomas I believe). I have understood is deliberate, but obviously not everyone likes it. Being such a perfectionist, why would Tuomas (and the rest of the band) accept something that was below par in his opinion? He has mentioned he wanted the album to be heavier, and therefore the orchestra and the band play a bigger part.
@@tanjanikola9489 The album is more eclectic than heavy (which it is, but Dream Theater would be heavier)) since we have orchestral arrangements and also (children?) choirs, but the result is very good. Tuomas calls it a love song (written just after his father died in fact on Feb 4th 2021). The love of all those who have gone before and been lost (a major theme of the album). All the ways in which people live on in nature and all around you. The album starts with the projector (the "magic lantern") and ends with it. Pure Floor. I love this song. Btw, this song was Floor's pick for a single, it made her cry when she first heard it (I had the same reaction to this song, it's so touching). Tuomas lost his father a few years ago and he wrote this song out of that emotion. The message is to enjoy life, as it's beautiful and should be celebrated instead of grieved when it ends. Nightwish is their own genre and no other band comes close to the level they are at. Never, in the history of music entertainment, have a set of skills and talent collided in such powerful manner. Tuomas is a true genius as a composer and with lyrics.
Being an old school progger, it's always great to hear more modern takes on the form. The Daily Doug has bought a few of these musicians to my attention, Nightwish being one of my new favorites. ✌
Great reaction! Lanternlight is the most beautiful, soul gripping, heart stringing, fulfilling, masterful celebration for and remembrance of Tuomas’, anyone’s, father ❤️🔥 Tuomas is an absolute genius! My father, the strongest man I know and the cornerstones of my entire being/life, passed on cpl of years ago; on the waining hour of my Birthday. He had endured physically and emotionally for over 20 years after multiple strokes and other health challenges. His peaceful passing on was a true blessing; so much so that I had yet to shed one tear; until now! The combination of Tuomas’ yet another compositional and lyrical masterpiece and its manifestation by Floor and Troy finally opened, on a good note, my floodgates 💦💦😭 No amount of Finnish 🇫🇮 inner strength enhancing, emotion blocking, words (sisu, saatana, perkele) could hold back the desperately needed and necessary outpouring of emotions; reflections, remembrance, appreciation, flashbacks, re-lived joy and eternal love. Genuine tears do have healing powers! Tuomas, Floor, Nightwish, “Lanternlight” - ❤️🔥and thank you to The G.O.A.T. IMHO, there has never been, there will never be, another Nightwish!
Hi Doug, 74 years old hippie from the Netherlands =Floor, Irene, Simone, Anneke, Dianne, Charlotte, Sharon, Marcella, Joost (LUL) & Arjen (Ayreon) Country= reporting in: Impressed with your reaction! There are a lot of Singers/Musicians who are important for the Music Industry (SALES) and there are Singers/Musicians, NOT A LOT, who are important for The Music History, as an ART ... That's where you find FLOOR & Nightwish !!! Shine on my friend... ✌🤘
The projector and flute at the end is a mirror of the start of the album. Just another stroke of Tuomas genius. The guy in the final images was the first pope to ever be filmed.
What I found out about the album is that when you listen to it multiple times and you know the lyrics they're singing you magically can hear the voices better
Love the message behind Day Of. When people are afraid, they can be herded, predictably, like sheep. This is a call for people to live their lives. To quote Frank Herbert: Fear is the mindkiller.
I definitely recommend buying the album, it's an experience. And, to me, maybe my all-time favourite album when listening to it from start to finish with lyrics in hand. It feels like its own world when it's playing, a journey. I still love the earlier albums, but like I said, this album as a whole was something else.
Hi Doug, you are right I can listen to her sing all day too. I have been listening to nightwish for 3 years now and I don't ever get tired of them. I have listened to Yesterwynde all the way through and it's a remarkable piece of art and music for the mind. That's all I have to say about that.
Floor plays the role of a fearmonger and the children are the voices of hope. In the last 2 choruses Floor joins the children because she realized 'the end is fear! Tuomas has said the mix is where it needs to be . Lantern light is an incredibly beautiful song . Great reaction as always!
The sound of rolling film is present at the beginning and end of the album. That final film clip is Pope Leo 13th taken in 1894 - he was born in 1810 (I believe) making him the earliest born human to be captured in moving pictures.
The only disagreement I have with Tuomas is that grief and celebration can exist together. And I thank Nightwish for the permission for and musical expression of complicated emotions. Sorrow and quiet joy exist together in my heart when I think about my oldest son who died 4 years ago in a car accident. He was to me, and many others, one of the kindest people we had ever loved and lived with. I am a retired psychiatrist and worked with many people in unbelievable pain who still laughed and cried in equal measure. We taught each other how to be more human. We shared music and poetry as often words failed us, Nightwish was right in there in both artistic "categories". I simply love this album.
The first 3 notes of Lanternlight hooks you, then Floor tears you apart with her Beautiful Vocals, and the music just takes you. Lanternlight is in itself a masterpiece. (Also Troy....)
I get a real Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck from this masterpiece. I can well imagine Johanna singing this. It's one of Tuomas's best compositions yet, imo. And Floor's performance....wow! Like you say, special.
The projector sound is in the song itself, The album start with it winding up and this is the last track of the album and now it winds down, This album is most def a listen from start to finnish!
What's remarkable is that Floor sang the entire album in her home studio in 6 days just 6 weeks after the birth of her daughter. Thuomas had planned 2 weeks for this and expressed his admiration for how well Floor was prepared for the recordings and for achieving such an achievement so soon after the birth. In an interview, Thuomas mentioned that it was intentional that Floor's vocals were not so prominent, the album was a work of art and Floor's voice was one of the instruments
Doug, I really enjoyed especially this reaction from you as it was so on point. Lanternlight grew up to my song of the year and is in the top 3 list of my alltime highs. Greetings from Germany!
Tomas wrote this song not long after his father passed away in, I believe, 2001. I think he said it was the first song he wrote for the album. Then, Floor sang it 6 weeks postpartum, when she was in too much pain to stand. Yes, it is a special song. Not only is it one of the most gorgeous songs that Nightwish (Tuomas) has ever written and produced, but great pain and effort were given to bring it to light. This song, this album, is a masterpiece.
We knew you'd like this. What a wonderful and as you say important last song for not only an album or album cycle, but also for a period of life and loss.
The Day Of… Adults spreading fear to the next generation is represented by Floor as she sings to the children, then she is singing with / alongside the children. This matches a theme from a previous Nightwish song - “Weak Fantasy” Lyrics: “Fear is a choice you embrace”. Lantern Light is so beautiful. 🤍 The first song written for the new album - Written by Tuomas in memory of his father. The film imagery in the video also shows “Pope Leo & it’s the earliest and oldest film recording”. The first person ever filmed. Then, did you hear the Gregorian Chant at the end of the song? (also included in The Greatest Show on Earth (the history of music section). “Gregorian Chant - This style of chanting is not hampered by restrictions of time and measure, and that gives it the irresistible power it possesses over the feelings, as an eloquent discourse carries away the heart. Gregorian music undergoes no change; like Latin, the language of the Church, it is always and everywhere the same”. Tuomas has spoken about having “no religion” but was born into a Catholic background - many Nightwish songs describe his journey through life, faith & religions. Life, timelessness, petrichor, weave, evocative lyrics that interconnect elements throughout this album Yesterwynde (In the lyrics, the videos, the music and even links to previous albums). Tuomas mentioned there are Easter Eggs to be found throughout!! Yesterwynde concludes a triology of the Human/ Nature/ Timeless themes. Listen to the whole album from beginning to end - we will watch! 😊
I've only had the opportunity to assist to 4 Nightwishs concerts in my life and unfortunately they don't have plans to create a world tour to promote this album. But when the time comes and perhaps with the next album we will have the fortune to see them again on stage, I really need to go to a concert of them with you, Doug. That ought to be amazing!! If you want to create a reaction of An ocean of Strage Island would be great, in my opinion, it is in my top 5 of best Nightwishs songs ever. See ya', friend!
Finally someone uses the correct terminology. Tuomas is a composer. He creates pieces of music (not songs) with brilliant lyrics. Great review. Thanks Doug.
It is pretty easy to see how much you enjoyed that song. That is the first time I’ve seen you almost moved to tears. I’ve heard this song dozens of times already, and it brings tears every time. You definitely need to listen to the album in it’s entirety. And also as someone else mentioned already, there are orchestral versions of every song. I think you will definitely enjoy them as well. Great reaction Doug.
Great analysis and reaction to both songs. Thank you for that Tuomas quote on Day of… When I initially heard Perfume, I was a bit upset about how Floor’s voice is not really in the foreground. Having listened to the album, it now makes sense. There are songs like Lanternlight that absolutely showcase her and other songs that focus more on the rest of the band, orchestral parts and the story of the song. Overall, I was not very optimistic about Yesterwynde initially but now thoroughly enjoy the album.
Doug,is it possible you could arrange an interview with Tuomas ? I have so much respect of your musical knowledge and experience. I enjoyed this dissertation so much. Thank you !! ❤
Once they come back to stages, it is easy to imagine them turning the Lanternlight to band performed ballad. Also a showcase for Tuomas' piano playing.
In incredible album came out and I really love it. Doubled orchestra from back years , arragements from James Shearman , the man at the button of London Philharmonic for their projects and not their orchestrator , Pip Williams, recorded in the studio 2, at Abbey Road Studios in London, that recorded first time Ghost Love Score, with the same man in tge button then. Tuomas went powerful , more epic and more lyrical until now . An example of of the orchestra recorded Yesterwyde album is 50+ strings , epic brass section, doubled than before ( 7 Horns , 2 Trumpets, 4 Trombones , Tuba/ Cimbasso ) , pairs with doubles to woodwinds , Timpani and 5 percussionists , 1 Harp, and the band, and 60 piece choir of adult voices and at big kid's choir. Epic scale project? For me yes . Nightwish forever! And much love to the our Queen. She deserves it❤❤❤
The projector sounds are on the original. The album begins with the sound of a projector starting up, and ends with it unspooling and shutting down...life.
Musical maturity is exactly it. The entire Floor era is marked by it. Tuomas has grown immensely as a composer, the band has grown immensely as writers and players, and you can really hear it in their last few albums. Imaginaerum was the start of this growth, and it was a great album, but Endless Forms was a flourishing, and everything they've produced since has been simply incredible. Anyway, hey Doug, have you been introduced to Diablo Swing Orchestra yet? Might I recommend checking out the song "Lucy Fears The Morning Star". I think you'll find it a fascinating fusion of genre and tone
The projector get started up at start of album, and gets turned off at the end, and i think it fits qlbum, as the album is a grand journey, from start to finish. The day off.. yes a song as you decribed about fearmongers, and that we should try grab for beauty in life, symbolised also by the coloured rose in video. Lanternlight is written by Tuomas, for hes father who passed away in 2021, its a song about as life fully lived, and passed on to the forrest of yesterwynde.. If you want to know what yesterwynde means, listen to 1st track, and also listen to bandmembers explaining it, my take is that its the secret stream basicly, the memories of all, and the energy in life, and death..and the time itself i could miss something here, but my take on it..
The projector sounds are included on the official full album in the first track as a start, and in the last track as the end of the album, like the story throughout the album is shown via a projector. So, it is included on the actual album. Since you like the ochestral parts I can recommend listening til the full orchestral release of the album. It is included as the "2nd part" of the streaming releases (tracks 13-23), at least on TIDAL, and can be found on UA-cam on unofficial channels. No vocals except some choir, and no heavy drums, and it's composed specifically as an ochestral piece. Could very well be a movie sound track.
Thanks for your elaborate perspective. The melody of Lanternlight reminds me of traditional Cumbria/Northumberland music. That could well be Troy's influence (he is from Cumbria). You are right about Floor's voice: I could listen to her all day, everyday.
Just what I expected from you Doug upon listening to this glorious song. Perfection and insightful comments and the joy of listening for the first time. Thank You from the Nightwish Army. For your info the title of the second album of the three is HUMAN // NATURE not TO. The marks between the words are of no meaning says Toumas. Peace!

This. Remember to fear, someone will act as a cure for that fear and get power and money.
Well, a little fear is good. It’s literally the driving instinct that keeps us alive 🙂
In this album the orchestra truly became integral part of the composition of the songs
I definitely recommend buying the album, it's an experience. And, to me, maybe my all-time favourite album when listening to it from start to finish with lyrics in hand. It feels like its own world when it's playing, a journey. I still love the earlier albums, but like I said, this album as a whole was something else.
Thanks, wonderful reaction to these amazing songs. The whole album is a work of art, Nightwish best album.
22:25 time stamp... That is the face we all put when we felt our very souls shrinking to that note!
The Change from G to E minor. It's very nice, that it was used here again
Hi Doug, you are right I can listen to her sing all day too. I have been listening to nightwish for 3 years now and I don't ever get tired of them. I have listened to Yesterwynde all the way through and it's a remarkable piece of art and music for the mind. That's all I have to say about that.
Lantern Light is beautiful, as in tears are flowing beautiful. It's a song to his father, gone three years past.
Incredible band and great reviewer :)
"I could listen to her sing all day, every day." I do. 😉
I agree.
Composition wise I would strongly argue for the b-side of human//nature but that absolutely boils down to personal preference.
Laternlight was written when Tuomas's father passed away last year.
This will be played at my funeral.
You WILL enjoy the whole album. No doubt❣️
Beautiful music today. Very special indeed.
These guys are great!!!
As a NW fan since -98, this is a very special song from them. Shuddering before the most beautiful.
The projector sound is in the song itself, The album start with it winding up and this is the last track of the album and now it winds down, This album is most def a listen from start to finnish!
And still there is an orchestral version of it, just as beautiful.
Thanks, Doug! I enjoyed your perspective once again. :)
The Day Of…
Adults spreading fear to the next generation is represented by Floor as she sings to the children, then she is singing with / alongside the children.
This matches a theme from a previous Nightwish song - “Weak Fantasy”
Lyrics: “Fear is a choice you embrace”.
Lantern Light is so beautiful. 🤍
The first song written for the new album - Written by Tuomas in memory of his father.
the projector sounds is also in the album, and marks the end of it... Pure magic!
And marks the start of the album also
Thank you for this wonderful video. You nailed it Doug. Cheers from a finn in Sweden.🎉
It would be great if you react to the whole album!! Or some songs like The Weave and The Antikythera Mechanism!! 🙂🤘
Dank je wel Floor en Nightwish
Absoluut prachtig x
The film projector starts and finishes the album
I have the album - every track is amazing and thought provoking - Love your comments too - Thanks Doug from the UK.
The projector sound is part of the song. It is part of the first and part of the last song (thisone) is the album
I have to say the day of... didn't grab me on first listen but Lanternlight definitely did. What an incredible song.
This reaction was absolutely Remarkable !!!!
Thank You my good sir.
NWSU/FloorFan/Epican/Ayreonaut/TWA/PauFan 🤘😎🤘.
Oh, yeah, the Kleenex song. I have listened to this work on repeat enough times that I don't actually tear up any more. Stil achingly beautiful..
Can't wait for more reactions from this album! Would love a reaction to Ocean of Strange Islands
Flor is a large part of Ayreon and Arjen's other projects. He only invites the best for his works.
Nice reaction again👍 Great that you are going to buy the album🙏
Great analysis and reaction to both songs. Thank you for that Tuomas quote on Day of…
When I initially heard Perfume, I was a bit upset about how Floor’s voice is not really in the foreground.
😊😊 Thanks for sharing your reaction with a double Video.
Your comments and analysis today were very good, friend. I'm glad having paid you a short visit. ;-)
„I can hear to her all day“… me too. And I do so…
The album also starts with that sound of the projector
Doug,is it possible you could arrange an interview with Tuomas ?
I have so much respect of your musical knowledge and experience.
I enjoyed this dissertation so much.
Thank you !! ❤
Once they come back to stages, it is easy to imagine them turning the Lanternlight to band performed ballad. Also a showcase for Tuomas' piano playing.
I really enjoyed your analysis of (especially) the lyrics. Thank you ❤ and greetings from Finland!
Perfection, true art
She deserves it❤❤❤
The projector sound is on the start of the album and on the end, so not only in the video
The projector sounds are on the original. The album begins with the sound of a projector starting up, and ends with it unspooling and shutting down...life.
Great reaction ❤🔥 Greetings from Finland!
The Album starts and ends with the projector-sound. It‘s like a frame for the whole thing.
Great reaction oh i Forget, do the whole Album
please..with grettings from northern Germany 🤘
Doug, I've enjoyed your review of the new Nightwish album. You have an amazing way to bring us into the mind of Tuomas...
This is my favorite nightwish album.
It makes me feel all different things
OMG Remembers me of my Goth days.....Great Job Doug
Love your videos!! You REALLY should react to the entire album, or at least, An Ocean of Strange Islands.
Peace!
Yesterwynde is, imo, their best album ever. The trilogy are all great but this one is their best.
