  • Inger and I thru hiked Nordlandsruta southbound in 29 days from 17th of July 2024. We spend, as usual, most of the nights in our tent.
Nordlandsruta, The Nordland Trekking Trail, is a 650 km long hiking trail in the county of Nordland in Norway. The northern terminus is Bjørnfjell, near Narvik, and the southern terminus is Susendalen in Hattfjelldal.
The trail follows the mountains border area between Norway and Sweden. Some 130 km is on the Swedish side of the border. Two thirds of the trail is north of The Arctic Circle and the trail takes you through three national parks and six nature reserves. Most of the trail is above treeline.
The trail pass Northern Norway´s three highest mountains, Oksskolten 1916, Suliskongen 1908 and Storsteinsfjellet 1894, and five different glaciers.
There are 43 accommodation options, mostly unmanned DNT-cabins, along the trail.
Hiking from mid July you will normally find a lot of cloadberries and blueberries.
For those of you who are familiar with the Swedish Kungsleden, Nordlandsruta is mostly on the Norwegian side of the national border, on the same latitude, but 200 km longer.
While Kungsleden is crowded, you can hike for days on Nordlandsruta without seeing other people. You will probably see more reindeer than people along the trail.
Hiking seasons are from early/mid July to mid September, and hiking northbound or southbound is your option.
