Though not licensed, I repaired a Kenwood, HF, 6 meter, and 2 meter transceiver of the 1980s vintage. When the owner arrived, he wanted me to do an on air test. I could not do that without him because, as previously mentioned, I have no amateur radio license. I am merely a hobbyist. With the owner's permission for third party radio traffic, I went to 146.200Mhz LSB and called CQ. I expected no answer back. The owner was looking at a signal analyser while I transmitted. But I did get the characteristic buzzing of someone on sideband that was off frequency, or on the opposite sideband I was using. I tried calling CQ again and the second time I got a clear answer back! The operator let me change power levels and filtering while the owner of the radio kept checking the signal with his equipment attached to his laptop. The owner had me change modes to FM, AM, USB, and CW while he kept taking his readings. Generously, the other operator on the air stayed with us until the test was over and the owner of the old Kenwood radio signed off. The owner of the radio was happy, paid, and took his radio. It was really very, very interesting to have a 2 meter contact on LSB, USB, AM, FM, and CW, all in one hour, without a license! I achieved more as a techie and hobbyist than most licensed operators! The rest was conducted on an antenna I made from a coat hanger that I placed in a 3/8ths fine drive end with a set screw. I mounted the antenna where I had my scanner antenna on the roof. What fun and satisfaction! His old radio had been down for years.

I've watched Session one already. I am just now, at the age of 63, getting ready to get my Amateur Radio License. I've been a CBer(SSB) for many years and my radio experience includes 6 years in military aircraft ground communications and over 23 years as a 9-1-1 dispatcher. I've ordered my very first radio with Amateur Radio bands and anxious to get started. Thanks for all of the good information. I am taking notes like crazy.

CONGRATULATIONS! As a former 9-1-1 dispatcher, one of my challenges in moving to HAM was the use of phonetic alphabet ... Police/EMS "Adam" - "Bob" - "Charlie" - "David" ... is NOT USED. Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta... with your military aircraft ground communications experience, you should have no problem ... I made a lot of laughable mistakes but my HAM buddies were patient and helped me to get it right. You are going to love HAM. Welcome to the club! And Thank You for your service. 73's W5KKX.

Thanks so much, guys! I lost my father this year and I am taking my test in November in hopes of keeping his call sign going. I grew up listening in his radio room and had always hoped to learn Morse code. And then, last year, I found out I didn't need it! I sincerely appreciate the knowledge given out here. Took my first practice test and scored in the 50% range. Still practicing!

First off. Thank yall for taking the time to put this together. I loved in Plano for several years and I'm pretty sure we had a QSO or two. I have a question. Technically speaking at what point of the antenna is the RF being sent out? I know most of it is at the tip. But I am curious how much is actually being sent out along the length of the antenna vs the tip of the antenna as a %.

4 hours into this course and not a single thing about electrical theory, or antennas or anything else the practice tests seem to want me to focus on. Seems like all my practice tests online have dealt with is diodes and cathodes and ohms and all the stuff you guys have not mentioned yet. You guys are great for telling me what I can do once I get my license of that ever happens. The practice tests all seem to want me to know how to build a radio not talk on them, grrr.

The class is awesome, but coming from both a responder and ham perspective I have one thing that I disagree on stated in the video.
If one finds an officer down and has access to that officers radio please dear God use the officers own radio to call for help. 911 takes time (90 seconds or so) to process the call then it needs to be broadcast to all units via the radio who then can respond. All of this takes more time.
Last time I called urgent for police backup on an ambulance via ems channel for same dispatch center it took 3 minutes for the police to get the call. That will NEVER happen again. When I call for police help now at work I move straight to their frequency and do so, this gets help coming immediately. If you can access the officers own radio it tells dispatch which officer it is (via radio identifier) and can allow them to see where they last makes that officer. It also lets every other officer on the frequency immediately start to them if you give an approximate location.
Not only would I do this without hesitation even if I have my cell phone but I’ve taught my kids the same thing. In my oldest son’s 9 years he’s never messed with my radios, work or Ham, but I promise if there was an emergency at home he’d have the work radio keyed up in a second if appropriate.

@1:22:50 Just a point, tropospheric ducting is not tropospheric scatter.
Ducting is a weather related phenomena and is not dependable.
Tropospheric scatter involves very high power and very high gain antennas (even higher than EME) and is always available if the link budget allows (it's bad ). The army used this propigation path before satellites.
I think one of the last in operation was a link between Greenland and New Jersey.
Not sure 1500 watts is enough power or if any hams are using/trying this path.

Great content. One thing that stuck out is your mention of HIPAA. That's not how any of that works. Not only would you not be subject to HIPAA protections for PII, but simply sending CW instead does not protect someone passing PII who is subject to HIPAA. It kind of makes me wonder how much of this talk was invented from anecdotes or repeated without verifying.

Question: If your radio traffic does not leave the state, then how (and by what authority) does the federal government regulate radio traffic? How does “interstate commerce clause” apply. “
Question 2: Could a state (Texas?) pass a law that would allow, say, individuals with a Ham license to transmit encrypted digital messages provided that the radio traffic does not leave the state?

What kind of transmitter/receiver do you need to talk around the world? Very expensive with massive antenna?

If one is preparing for a electrical grid down scenario, where internet & cell phone communications are gone - will digital communication via ham be a useful alternative?
I’m getting my ham license & ham radio & backup power for such a scenario. Should I focus on digital communications or traditional (non digital) radio communications?

Both, honestly. Both are capable with the same type of radio and antenna.

Where can I go to pick someones brain about proper setup including grounding of my first 2m/70cm rig with a jpole antenna on my highest eve. I checked out my brothers setup but it looked like serious overkill and very ugly. I will do whats safe though. Interested in setting up cross band repeating also so any suggestions of radios that will do this.

At approximately 1:20:19 there is a slide that shows that a space station is defined by being 50miles + above earth’s surface when I reviewed fcc part 97.3 it shows 50km which is only approximately 31miles. Can you confirm which is stated In the question pool.
