I've really liked my 1st gen Covrt, but after several years its time I started looking for a replacement. I like the exterior lines of the 2.0 and I was considering either it or the Rush 24, but you confirmed that 5.11 got rid of all of the features I liked about the Covrt. Thanks for the detailed, honest, and user-oriented review.
Great review. I love the original bag and was hping the 2.0 would have improved on the design. After watching your video I decided the 2.0 isnt for me. What really did it for me was the removal of the big sunglass pocket and front 2 pockets. I love the spaciousness and flexibility of those pockets. Thise were the deal breakers for me. Looks like ill be sticking to my original COVRT18. Thnaks again for saving me money on something that would have sat in my closet.
I have the old version for the last ~8 years, using it daily for work, hiking, travel trips. Washed few times with machine wash - like new. Only handle started ware off around lines, because from time to time I am carrying heavy things in my bag. I was thinking to by 2.0, but now in doubt :( ...
Great comparison video. I was thinking of getting the covert 18 v2 but hadn’t seen a lot about it out there. I might just wait, now that I’ve seen both together, thanks. Subscribed, keep up the good work. 👍🏼
Thanks for this review. Was looking for a side by side comparison. I've had the V1 for a few years. I love it. It's been a work bag. EDC bag. Just finished a 10 day road trip last month with it. Was my carry on and EDC bag for it. I could probably do without the very front two pockets. I wish the bottle pockets were a little deeper. It does get front heavy if you are not carful when packing it. I have no major complaints about this bag. The shove it pocket on V2 is about the only thing I like on it.
I had version one for several years until it got stolen. Looking for a replacement since then. Is there ANY comparable backpack in the world? I can't find anything that offers the same features.
Really feel they needed a 1.5 instead. And for the ccw pocket, to have gone the route they did on the new rush bags. Same type they used on the moab and box covrt.... So many of their bags are "almost right" to me. Love the hazard nitro, just would have wanted bottle pockets instead of their trek pole slots? And the internal molle should have been standard orientation. Save the horizontal mount molle for sling bags.
Thats the only thing keeling me from buying the covrt from the rush. I dont like how the ccw compartment isnt sealed. Id be afraid of it slipping out.. i wish the rush 2.0 had the white zippers damnit I really like that white accent. Trivial but still
I appreciate the detailed review, and I can clearly see why the original would work best. 5:11 should have considered sticking a little closer to the original version before manufacturing the 2.0. I think that I may go with the 2.0 version because of the clean anesthetics and the lighter material on the inside, which, for me, is a plus. I just sold my Rapid Quad Zip back pack, but I'm still hanging onto my Rush Moab 24 version one. Thx enjoyed the vid. 👍
Old one is my favorite bag, but their impossible to find now. I often use the bladder sleeve to carry my laptop, and just put my own padding sleeve on my laptop inside it. You can remove the plastic part in the bladder part and put armor in it if you want to. Lost my velcro badge flap, and a common thing was the bungies for the drink meshes to break, both of mine have, but im never getting rid of this bag. Atleast, not until I can find another one.
Great review. I've used the older version every day for a number of years. While it's holding up like a champ I'm not looking forward to the day I'd have to replace it. Anyone know where you can still buy the older version? The sunglasses pocket, the small admin pocket, and the handle are my favorite features on the old version yet they completely stripped those away. Seriously, anyone, where can I still buy the older version?
@Christian Schulz. Thanks for your kind words and for sharing your personal experience with the bag. I'm still using mine as my dedicated GHB. You may want to try looking on eBay or OfferUp for a replacement.
Great review of both. The only thing they should’ve changed on 1.0 are the anchor points and the mesh side pouches and it would’ve been solid. Other than that the 2.0 is a great bag to be a complete “gray man” as to where 1.0, it’s not as flashy with the MOLLE loops like other bags but the anchor points somewhat give it away .
I have the original version & while I like it, I WISH they had done the CCW pocket different. I'd much rather it be closer to the back as I feel that if you are carrying a weapon in that pocket it seems like the bag sags forward even when I have it cinched down tight.
@Prepping With Sarge. I still have the 24 but I think the 12 is my favorite. My friend has the Moab and likes it. I'll be back one of these days. I've been watching your videos, good stuff. Keep it up!
Looks like a cevrt18 mixed with an Osprey Daylite plus backpack. I have the Osprey and wanted something a little larger. The rush bags are to military looking. Need a rush without the molle webbing.
This seems like a nice get home bag, i know one of the front pockets is meant to put your handgun into it. With the extended strech compartment pocket added, it be nice to put a mini chest rig in there with an ar pistol and other stuff if you choose to do so.
I have the older version and have had it for what seems a lifetime. The shoulder straps have let me down and torn and frayed. i was going to get the new version but after seeing your comparison video it has made me think twice. Do you know where i can get my hands on an old version? Oh and one other thing i am based in the UK so there may be issues shipping it into the UK as i have had problems with some other kit i have tried to order not being shipped to the UK.
Can anybody confirm whether or not the laptop sleeve in the 2.0 can hold a 15.6'' gaming laptop (thus, on the bigger end of 15.6''). I prefer the 2.0 by far for my use, especially because of that laptop sleeve in the backside compartment but my laptop needs to fit in.
Would you know where I can purchase the older model? I have been looking everywhere here in Australia but would appreciate even a direction in the states. Thanks
Agree with your conclusion. I've used covrt18 as my everyday carry for several years and I absolutely love it. With the new version there is simply too many changes I just don't like. Only thing I like is that they removed the two rubber "patches" on the back. They tended to pull up my t-shirts 😅. Luckily it can be dealt with using sandpaper. I also wouldn't mind the new sidepockets. On the whole I'm going to buy a new one (the old version) in a short while. On a related note - the stores selling the bags here in Denmark have all lowered the price on the new version so it's now 10% cheaper than the old version. And yes - I contacted a seller and he said it's because people prefer the old version.
I bought the newer version online, and am pretty unhappy with that open area you mentioned. I gave it a friend who rides a bicycle a lot, and loves that feature. I wish I had seen your video before ordering it.
Based on your review, the original bag would fit me much better and I think it is a much better bag overall. The anchor points I use to attach carabiners and other things that I need quickly. I have a North Face bag that is very similar to the original 5.11 bag.
@@lguzman130 I’m sorry, but I don’t know what model it is. I have checked the website and they don’t seem to have it anymore. I have had it for almost 10 years.
I am a long time user of the original COVRT18 but recently bought the 2.0 for my daughter to use for school. She decided it wasn’t for her and I lost the receipt, so I’m stuck with the 2.0. I much prefer the original COVRT18. I use it for work on a Navy ship, light hiking, and as my range bag. The eyewear pocket is large enough for my eye pro (glasses or goggles), and ear muff style ear pro. The 2 pockets between the attachment loops are great for a packable rain jacket in one, snacks or navigational aids in the other. The admin compartment at the top front of the original pack disappoints me, as I wish it was large enough for a tablet or composition notebook but I make it work. I find that the shoulder straps and back panel are much more comfortable on the original. The original doesn’t look like it, but the main compartment is large enough for me to pack my NWUs (camouflaged uniform) if folded and compressed & boots; I can’t do that with the 2.0. 5.11 nailed the CCW compartment and water bottle pockets with their LV18 and I wish they would have carried both over to the 2.0 backpack. Finally, I prefer to keep my laptop and water bladder separate. The original COVRT18 has served me for many years without any rips or tears and I hope it will continue to do so for many more years. P.S.; you didn’t mention the zip tie holders on the original COVRT18. I never used them but they are there.
I actually wanted to buy the original but its sold out, I felt like that "turn it into a plate carrier" thing with the admin pocket was the best selling point for me sadly they got rid of that.
What’s a good way to prevent this pack from bulging in the center? I’ve used it for years and ran it ragged unfortunately, I’m tempted to buy a new version but it still lacks compression straps in the middle which is my biggest roadblock
@Gizmos & Gadgets. I haven't experienced that issue with the bag. It's possible the bag stretched after years of use. The AMP might be a good alternative if you're not interested in the updated version of this bag. Hopefully someone else can chime in.
I ordered what I thought was the older bag, but got the newer one. I love the review. I was looking at the more Tactical bag, but wanted a more typical looking bag to take through the airports and have as my go to bug out bag. I do like the compartment to keep my tactical first aid kit. Its thr perfect size for it.
I've carried the original everyday for years now. Some good upgrades would have been lowering the clips that hold the bag together so you could access the main department when it is clipped together, take out the plastic thing in back, change the front two small zipper pockets to velcro, replace all zipper pulls, put 550 cordage on the front anchors, remove the velcro straps on the front shoulder straps(not sure what they can be used for) and minimize the velcro in the front pouch (just have the hook and loop). They could also get rid of the two loops to roll the front pocket down to expose the velcro, it's a little silly. The 2.0 just seems like an entirely different bag altogether. Realistically, I feel "bugout bag" is utter nonsense, however the original may be able to help you get home in a time of crisis. Overall the original is a great bag. I'd buy version 2.0 if they made these concessions. Great video review!
I like both backpacks, but also not a fan of the helmet compartment with the new one. Did you sell the old version? I can’t find it anymore since release of the new one.
