- Sawyer and I get out to run on some prairie chickens in central Wisconsin. Although there hasn't been a prairie chicken hunting season since 1955, this restoration project area boosts nearly 13,000 acres of grasslands and is the home of a nice population of wild prairie chickens. The nesting season starts on April 15 each year, which is off limits to running dogs during this time.
It was great to get out and get some better weather as this winter has been never ending it seems. The conditions were not good, wind 25-35 this day made finding birds difficult and more difficult to have them hold. We found 6 birds in all, Sawyer did as good as he could and had a couple nice points but birds flushed pretty wild.

Hey man I enjoy watching your stuff and had a question. Where did you find on prairie chickens in Wisconsin? I’ve been searching for info on the web for a few days now and can’t find anything in writing. I noticed in your video you said they are closed for hunting during breeding season and I just can’t find any dates on Wisconsins DNR website. If you could send over some links or something to get me headed in the right direction that would be awesome!
Update to my question: do they just categorize prairie chicken under grouse in the hunting regulations?
There is no hunting season for them in Wisconsin, you can only run dogs on them outside the nesting season which is April 15- July 31st I believe. There is only some 600 total birds in Wisconsin so finding them on these state grasslands is kind of special. Name is in the title.
@@UnderFortyYards ok so no actual shooting just letting the dogs point them and such.
@@jamincarr5673 That's right no hunting. There are a fair amount of NAVHDA chapters and dog breeders that train thier dogs on these grounds. It's a nice run on for some wild bird exposure.
