  • traight Piped H2 engine!
Here is a good example of why to change the ignition timing when running Hydrogen gas.
As seen in the previous video this engine runs fantastic on hydrogen and is economical too, but at high RPM the engine destroyed itself. This is because it was still operating at standard ignition timing, generating engine knock and piston slap.

To help fund more hydrogen engine projects like this, I am now able to supply the Hydrogen Flashback Arrestor used in this video 😀
A key safety element in all hydrogen systems.

The video was edited and reposted because the original video didn't show the engine running, hope you all enjoy.

two stroke need oil in bore.. maybe it's seized.. great project

Interesting project indeed: he did say its a 4 stroke early in the video and for this very reason you have identified, I'm assuming he chose a 4 stroke platform to test with.

      Yep, this is a 4 stroke 50cc,
Looks like the reason for failure was wrong ignition timing for hydrogen, to be expected really. Non the less it was a good example of why it needs to be changed.
Thanks for the feedback, will upload another video soon.

@@Hydrogenguys from the playing around i did i found hydrogen more of an implosion, but it did stop my old van from smoking, and tripped out the MOT station, as emissions had almost vannished.. look up the JOE CELL.. taught me a lot about pre charging the water.. keep it up love this sort of stuff..

    It's all about timing

So.... How do you go about bottling the hydrogen in the first place?

The pure hydrogen gas is from a gas supplier, I’ll post a video about it soon.
I have made pure hydrogen gas myself and compressed into a container. You can find them videos on the UA-cam channel.

So what do you think caused the failure? Can hear a clang just as it cut out.

The ignition timing was off, causing a lot of piston slap. Looks like the piston ended up crushing the spark plug!
All the other engines have had their ignition timing changed except this one, so was only a matter of time really.

Its not that Tuff to run a small engineon hho

Yeah with the wide flammability range of hydrogen it’s easy to get running, it’s getting responsive throttle that can be tricky, but got that nailed down now.

Great video! Not a great engine so probably the rod couldn't handle the speed/power.
You should see if you can retrofit a diesel that would be a lot more over engineered for the power just keep the revs lower. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Good point about the diesel engine block idea, that would be a lot stronger. What killed this engine was wrong ignition timing, should be set to top dead centre, this engine was left with standard ignition timing, which worked well at low rpm, clearly not at high rpm, I knew it would fail eventually, just not so quick! All the other engines I use for hydrogen testing have had the ignition timing changed to top dead centre so this shouldn’t happen again.
      Thanks for the comment
