I regard this as the greatest acoustic guitar duet of all time. In any version of any live performance, Gary and Ray make the biggest duet ever. Good times. There will never be anything like Gentle Giant again.
I agree! I've been seeing you on these comment sections for years,. I'm glad to know there are such dedicated fans! I just wish more bands were as great as Gentle Giant. I mean, there's VDGG, ELP and Genesis, but I don't think even they're quite on this level. Haven't found any recent groups worth placing near Giant, of course. Maybe some day.
I'm not sure quite why I worded it like that, let me fix that. I think when I said "as great as," I meant in this kind of way, being: two instruments, two people and an incredible sound as result of that. Presently, I believe the only groups that would place at or near Gentle Giant's level is Jethro Tull and Yes, although I'm still looking for more. Don't get me wrong, there's a ton of fantastic music out there--much of which is far simpler, though just as good--but in terms of sheer complexity and musicianship, I think Gentle Giant are at the very pinnacle from what I've seen so far. I like how chaotic and dense their music is and wish more groups, especially recently, were as artistically talented and innovative instead of just making a lot of loud, awful noise.

One of, that's for sure...I put them with Crimson, Happy The man, Camel, PFM, all of whom I love... But; best bands have to go YES, Genesis, Floyd, ELP, et al...:)...
Zappa was a fan. Mike Kenneally learned to play by listening to Garry. This band was truly Britain's Mothers, only without the constant changes in lineup. Wonderful stuff.
Ray Shulman, along with Kerry Minnear, may be the finest prog rock composers of them all. They are for me, just my opinion please don't get mad...BTW, Ray rewrote this duet a couple times, my favorite version is on the live record "Playing The Fool"
We were so lucky to have Gentle Giant to listen to in my generation. Both these gentlemen were extremely talented multi instrumentalist. Ray Shulman is IMO one of the best bass players ever! Thanks for uploading this.
This is phenomenal! Not only the playing, but the incredible imagination behind its composition. This is way, way, way above any ‘normal’ piece. The word ‘genius’ is very overused, but in the case of GG individually and together, it is the only appropriate description.
I seen Gentle Giant in NY Central Park in 1976. I still have the program from the Schaffer Musical Festival. In the top 5 of my all time favorite bands. Raw talent, power and command. When music was music.
@@jamiepastman5594 I also was privileged to go to the Fillmore East for the few years it was around in 1968. Any band that was in town would show up at the late show staring at 11:30 admission was $2.00 and didn't end til 6am. Janis Joplin, Grand Funk Railroad, Humble Pie, Allman Bros to name a few bands i seen at the Fillmore.
WickedWonder, i was born in 1981 (the 1969 in my nickname is stands for the year of woodstock) and yep, they will remain one of a kind, surreal music of dreams and fantasies
Years ago I read an article which noted the GG albums on Frank's shelf. He admired the music and the production, which pretty well covers it all! He also liked the guitar on XTC's latest, which was "Nonesuch" I think. And he was into whaling songs. I think "Ship's Carpenter" was his favourite song. This must have been in "Guitar Player" magazine, which often featured Frank Zappa. I was a subscriber for years and didn't get any other music mags.
Those of us that heard them decades ago, still love them and play them frequently. Giant is a life time pursuit...Along with the rest of the prog genre.
This is totally crazy awesome! This band was something over every progressive band who ever existed. This is so fun to watch all this show especially, this is not something you listen on the road or for ambience lol but it's a pleasure for hears and the eyes . Talented musicians
This band had some incredible moments. So nice to hear a faintly jazzy/Renaissance style complex guitar duet performed on steel strings - rather than nylon as in the classical world. Rather reminiscent of Larry Coryell's acoustic work.
I remember very well: This was broadcast as 'Sonntagskonzert' by German TV station ZDF on some sunday morning in 1974. Usually, 'Sonntagskonzert' was a lightweighted entertainment affair, addressing the easy listening crowd. Hence the non existing reactions of the obviously overstrained audience in the TV studio. The whole broadcast is/was available as Giant on the Box DVD. Recommended!
More Prog than Prog............ ! The true masters of this genre...! They did Civilian to finally put a few bucks in their pockets but even that album was masterful.. This earlier work though should be kept in a case for all musicians to marvel at for all time... ! Genesis and Yes an ELP and King Crimson became more famous and their music was incredible..! but these guys are the true prog masters of history...
I think I've watch this song/clip 50 times and like a kid Christmas morning, I just can't wait for when the rest of the band comes in... I LOVE THIS JAM!!!
yeah but i mean they always sneak up bit from other songs, e.g. apparently the drum finale in So Sincere (in this here concert) is actually a homage to The Runaway
Well, fun that you mention it. Gentle Giant applies plenty of electronic instruments within their arsenal of instruments, the Mini Moog being among the core elements in the sound! Nothing wrong with electronic "toys", they are only as great as the people that use them!
They wouldn't want me to smash my acoustic into little pieces and just go and watch some Netflix crap, would they? They would tell me, go on mate, you can do it, wouldn't they? Tell me, they would.
Do you have any idea how complex his parts were? No way was he fucked up, not possible, he had some of the most difficult guitar parts ever tackled, mostly because they weren't typical guitar patterns at all. He is very overlooked when people talk about the history of prog, but he did amazing things. He's also a very nice guy (I met him).
RIP Ray, what a tragic loss.
Saying he was an excellent musician is an understatement.

YES
stunning . I have wasted my life listening to mediocre shit. this is beauty
SERIOUSLY DUDE. I've never heard anything like it it's amazing
RIP Ray. Best band ever.
RIP Ray Shulman, great musician and composer

Two absolute badass musicians out of a very, very badass band
Octopus is a brilliant album.
We were so lucky to have Gentle Giant to listen to in my generation. Both these gentlemen were extremely talented multi instrumentalist. Ray Shulman is IMO one of the best bass players ever! Thanks for uploading this.
Agreed about Ray's bass chops. I still learn things listening to their music.
Owe John Peel’s 6.00 radio show a huge debt, playing Alucard in 1970, been listening ever since 🎉
Ray Is such a beast musician...He's a master of everything he plays...His Bass lines are epic!

They are beautiful and completely unique! Они прекрасны и совершенно уникальные!
Yes!
If I had a time machine, that's the first place I'd go. I had no idea Giant performed in Central Park, WOW!

They are the Globetrotters of Prog Rock.
That's a great description!
Some of the best guitarist faces too. :)
Finest band ever to have graced a stage.
amazing, i wish i was born in the right decade just to see them live in their best
+Darlene1969 They broke up before I was a year old :( If we only had time travel!
WickedWonder, i was born in 1981 (the 1969 in my nickname is stands for the year of woodstock) and yep, they will remain one of a kind, surreal music of dreams and fantasies
I was 3 years old when GG disbanded. Discovered their music last year at the tender age of 45.
Very lucky to call Gary a friend!❤️
Two warriors of art. RIP Ray Shulman.
🌹Soft journey, Ray Shulman...RIP ...thank you
Friendship goals
Absolute Genius . for This Gentle Giant fan

I've only just discovered them and I'm feeling so bad because this band was simply phenomenal. Incredible talent and what great music. I'm diving in.
Those of us that heard them decades ago, still love them and play them frequently. Giant is a life time pursuit...Along with the rest of the prog genre.
Glad you found them! I've loved them since the 70s, when I was in college.
Welcome friend!
This duet has lived in my head since I first heard it 13 years ago
Such a beautiful moment, they both make love to their guitar, I wish I could learn to play like them
Rip ray Shulman you damn god of men
RIP Ray 😢😢
I think I'm in love !!! wow
Welcome!
Wonderful. I'm guessing Derek played bass for the last bit. They swapped so much it was brilliant.
Yeah, I've seen them several times and Derek plays bass when Ray is on the acoustic gutar or the violin.
Yes, Derek did play bass during this section, I saw it live. Nailed it, of course
This is totally crazy awesome! This band was something over every progressive band who ever existed. This is so fun to watch all this show especially, this is not something you listen on the road or for ambience lol but it's a pleasure for hears and the eyes . Talented musicians
I apologize for my language, but this whole thing is fucking amazing.
I want to meet this entire band in person. Prob the coolest dudes
definitely the most humble, considering their genius level talent
I met Gary Green , and yes, he was a modest and extremely cool gentleman, tolerated all my fan boy gushing quite graciously
Pure Brilliance!!!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Whoever disliked this, thats just sad.
This band had some incredible moments.
So nice to hear a faintly jazzy/Renaissance style complex guitar duet performed on steel strings - rather than nylon as in the classical world.

Great additional info, thank you. Giant on German TV on a Sunday morning, that makes me smile...
HELLISHLY difficult to play!
two brains one mind.
RIP Raymond
amazing and brilliant! virtuouso and emotionally!
I didn't even know Ray Shulman played guitar... Wow.
I think Ray could play anything, Kerry too
And violin of course
Terrific thanks for posting 🙏💙
I see two best friends that should get back together. Pronto..
Oh and Ray.....And John Weathers.... Oh my G
No love for Kerry?
And Derek!!!!!!!!
What about the eldest Shulman, Phil?
Greats of all time in progressive era….
Perfect!
Heavenly music with Jesus on keys!
Fantastic!
they were clearly high af, and still could play way better than I ever will lol
great, great GG
monsters!
thats what I call guitar brotherhood
So fun to watch.
super chingon!!

Such a beautiful version, I absolutely hate the camera work though
Amazing.....

I always find my way back here and loving it!!!
What are all the song fragments? I know for sure I heard "boys in the bands" and and "edge of twilight"
the song is called knots
yeah but i mean they always sneak up bit from other songs, e.g. apparently the drum finale in So Sincere (in this here concert) is actually a homage to The Runaway
Just realized, Gary Greene reminds me of Billy Mumy of "Lost in Space"!
The huaaaah at 2:20
And guitar was probably Ray's THIRD instrument.....
more like 5th
Even Scott Henderson praises GG
did he? cool!
Uh, holy crap.
anyone got tabs for this brilliant piece?
Real musicians don't need electronic toys. Two acoustic guitars will suffice.
Well, fun that you mention it. Gentle Giant applies plenty of electronic instruments within their arsenal of instruments, the Mini Moog being among the core elements in the sound! Nothing wrong with electronic "toys", they are only as great as the people that use them!
Friday Night in Octopusses' Garden
Can you say, Steve Howe??? Great Yes flavor
Well, this band and YES were contemporaries.
Imagine having an outfit like the drummer
Zappa? you sure? did you read it somewhere?, would love to hear what he had to say about GG!!
there is a short interview of Frank on youtube, where he praises GG's music and originality.
Here you go .... ua-cam.com/video/6gvtLa0R7kQ/v-deo.html
yep, I've seen it. He liked Giant and Holdsworth
The beginning kinda reminds me of Opeth
Now this stuff make almost all commercial shite of today smell even worse!!!!
I'm your subscribe 666 ... :-) LOVE GG
this is so fucking cool! is this in a GG studio song?
+D Barb Sadly no, it's a mix of different little melodies from different songs that they have masterfully combined for a guitar duet!
+D Barb Show IS available on DVD though..
A slightly different version is on their live album, "Playing The Fool."
If you think your local suburban metal band has chops on the 6-strings... 😂
They wouldn't want me to smash my acoustic into little pieces and just go and watch some Netflix crap, would they? They would tell me, go on mate, you can do it, wouldn't they? Tell me, they would.
Definitely. All the guys in the band are humble fellows
I mean.... how?
exactly
2:19 😂
Gary Green looks high as hell.
Nah, I believe you have to be dead sober to play like that. Pot heads keep forgetting everything.
Do you have any idea how complex his parts were?
