I suppose its how you interpret "hard to tackle". If you mean how hard it is to bring someone down, the Campbell it for sure one that could be King of that. Although I'd probably go with Christian Okoye there. But if we are including guys that just juke and fly and defenders can't even get a hand on them then Campbell gets dropped down a few notches.
As a Minnesotan Adrian Peterson is almost worshipped here, a real legend. man single handedly made the Vikings fun to watch for a good stretch of years. Even after he left he put up some damn good seasons when everyone thought he was done, he’s up there with sweetness and sanders for me 💪
Barry Sanders in 1997 only had a total of 53 rushing yards in the first 2 weeks of the season throw in the bye week he ran for 2000 yards in like 14 weeks, insane! He was one of the best. What can you say about Earl Cambell he was beast mode before there was beast mode, that Monday night game against the Dolphins (1978) in the 4th quarter on his 30th carry he breaks off a 80 yarder and out runs everybody.

As a fan who only roots for Washington when they play the Cowpokers I have to give a nod of respect to John Riggins. Man was a bulldozer at running back. Over 11,300 yards rushing over 2000 yards pass catches and 116 TDs.
Csonka should be there. His runs are amazing. Even when he gets stopped the entire defense is running into the scrum to push him back. 'Tackling Csonka is a two part process. First you have to survive the initial impact. Then you have to bring him down.'

Those are all worthy RBs, my reasoning on who was chosen was the longevity of their careers and how consistent they were in being the hardest to tackle. If you were to make a top 10, how would you rank your list?

What about Marshall Faulk who ran in the "Greatest show on turf" stl Rams team? What about Terrell Davis, the Denver Broncos 6th round draftee of 1995?
Jim Brown: 6' 2", 230 lbs. 106 career tds playing in 3 seasons of 12 games and 6 seasons of 14 games with no playoff games, only the league championship, unless there was a tie breaker in one of the divisions. He ran a 4.5 40 yards, yeah, I know, slow by todays standards, but he did it in full pads, regular cleats from a 3 point stance. Today they run it in track outfits with special shoes engineered to run on football turf. He averaged 104 yards per game for his entire career, and 5.2 yards per carry for his career playing in a much more vicious game than today that did not have 30 minutes of rest each half from tv time outs. A game in which very few modern running backs from today's pussy game would last 5 years. Tom Brady would not have made it through one season. Brown never missed a game in 9 years. If you measure production based on yards or scoring versus games played or total number of carries, there has never been anyone like him, and I've seen all of them since 1960.
in looking at the video title, i thought it meant contact tackling, not elusiveness. from the 60s and 70s, the best pure runner was the very elusive gale sayers. he was unbelievable. in the 60s, the 2 best power runners were jim brown and jimmy taylor. after that, you had larry csonka, john riggins, and franco harris. but by far and away, the best power runner of that era, and i suspect any era - earl campbell. he ran the ball like 40 times a game, and played on a terrible team. so it wasnt like the defense had to guess at who was gonna get the ball on each and every play. if campbell had played on a good team, just no telling how good he would have been. and no doubt could have played longer.

What about Larry Csonka ? He was pretty hard to tackle. He was on Miami when they had two 1000 yard rushers in the same season, went undefeated, and won two Superbowls in a row.

I don’t know where he ranks, but Alvin Kamara is the definition of hard to tackle. The crowds he emerges from is pretty incredible. Just an honorable mention

This will likely be controversial but imo, Emmitt Smith is the most overrated RB of all time. He played behind the greatest offensive line ever assembled and was often 7 yards down the field before anyone even touched him.
knew id find this. my comment was that he was historically underrated coz of stuff like this. u find that excuse for literally every great cowboy on that team: Emmitt was only great coz of the o-line and troy/irvin. troy was only great coz of emmitt and the o-line. @@Cristian-vm1bg I would never say that about Irvin, and I only said Emmitt is overrated because of his O-line, he was a great back, but should never be in any argument for the greatest. Aikman definitely benefited from the best O-line ever assembled, but he was also top 5 qb of his era anyway. My main point is that the O-line is criminally underrated in their success.

The problem is that your list is too short. There are many running backs who are as great as the ones on your list. My thought is, if he didn't get injured, Bo Jackson would have been the greatest running back of all time because he didn't appear to be human. He was awesome man, his highlight reel is crazy. I sent it to a couple friends who hadn’t heard of him either, and one grew up in Georgia and still lives there. Bo jackson, derrick henry, barry sanders. 1,2,3 Edit:I forgot about walter. Emmett was a product of the herschel walker trade. He averaged 2 yds before being touched. AP and barry had noone on their team. Emmet had hall of famers all around him. AP and barry saw 9 in the box every play
As good as those Bears defenses were in the mid 80's, and Payton too... the team couldn't win, especially against elite competition in the playoffs, without a healthy Jim Mcmahon. And with him healthy, they almost literally never lost period. 26-2 including 25 straight wins. You and many others act as if he didn't even exist, and it's irritating to those of us who were actually alive then to see him. That Bears team almost certainly would have been a dynasty if not for maybe the dirtiest cheap shot ever by Packers player Charles Martin in week 6 of 86. The Bears were undefeated again and had an even better defense statistically. At that time John Madden was heard saying: "If he's not the best QB in the NFL, he's close." Mcmahon was 4-1 lifetime against Montana head to head during that era when healthy. Without a healthy Mcmahon the Niners dominated the Bears on the other hand, 23-0 one time. The Redskins and Giants also dominated the Bears in the playoffs in that era when Mcmahon was out. With him healthy they beat those teams 45-10, and 21-0, respectively. And before you go holding his inability to stay healthy against him and cite it as a flaw... you might want to actually watch the cheap shot I mentioned above. He was never quite the same since. Statistically he won't look good to untrained millennial eyes who weren't actually there to see it live. But for those of us who were, well... I welcome you to watch some of their full games with Mcmahon in and see for yourself. Week 3 against the Vikings when he came off the bench is a great example of how the team looked with him in vs out. But watch them all. He was an all time great QB. The most underrated and disrespected one of all time, because of that cheap shot. Things from 86-90 would have been much different if not for Charles Martin.
The amazing thing about Sanders is the fact he ran behind some pretty poor lines... Even in the Lions' best years, the offensive line was average-at-best. What I've always said in discussions about runners... If the QB pitches to Sanders, no hole develops, he goes toward the sideline, and two defenders break through and are chasing him along the line, a safety is coming up, the sideline is getting closer and closer... I call it a fair fight.
Emmit was definitely a great back, but he spent at least 10 years behind one of the best offensive lines in NFL history, compared to Sanders playing behind a mediocre line at best his whole career. The Tyler Rose Campbell was incredible but like Gayle Sayers, had a short career.
You may want to split this into two categories. One for being hard to tackle because of speed and the second hard to tackle because of brute strength... Of course you'll have some guys like Bo Jackson that will be on both lists...

I haven't watched this yet but having anyone other than Derrick Henry at #1 would be ludicrous. There have been really fast guys who have been hard to tackle. There have been huge guys who bulldoze defenders but never had there been a RB who could do both let alone being the best at both. One of the biggest backs ever and likely the strongest or one of the strongest he had by far the nastiest stiff arm the sport has ever seen. a 6'3" 250lb back is not supposed to be able to get to the second level and outrun defensive backs (smaller guys who are usually the fastest of any position)
There have been boatloads of large fast RBs. Adrian Peterson is far ahead of D. Henry. Henry is very good right now. But saying he's a one of a kind is foolish. Backs like this usually have a short career. And judging by Henry's chicken legs he won't last too much longer. If he can keep it up, he may get there, but 1.5 good seasons in the era of pussyball isn't that impressive. If I were you and touting Henry's strengths, I'd mention his 100 yard dash speed. Henry isn't that fast in the 40, but in the 100 he's pretty hard to catch.
What about Bo Jackson, Mike Alstott, Jerome Bettis, Marshall Faulk, Marcus Allen, Herschel Walker, Terrell Davis, Clinton Portis, Reggie Bush, Christian McCaffrey, Eric Dickerson and Thurman Thomas, Roger Craig, and Christian Okoye.
Walter Payton nicknamed Sweetness was the hardest to bring down his stiff arms alone was legendary and you add everything else he should be no#1 Payton could run you over around and over a defense the complete package and could run and catch passes without any drop off in production and he was durable plus didn't miss any games from injuries in his career,Walter ran for 275 rushing yards with the flu at the time a one game record against Minnesota Vikings in 1977.
Wasn't Derrick Henry supposed to be washed up? Whoops no one told him. Because he is such a unicorn people get confused. They know how many carries RB's usually have before they are through and wrongly applied that to Henry. Henry was different than others he's not the one taking big hits, he's the one giving them out. Not to mention It's like people forget that his first 2 seasons he didn't play nearly as much.
Favorite back is Walter Payton, most elusive, Barry Sanders, toughest to bring down was Earl Campbell. Emmit Smith was a great back but I don't think he belongs on the list. Bo Jackson should be on this list. While all of these runners are great backs, I think there are many more that were harder to bring down than some on this list.

Earl Campbell was the best ever he did it all with no offense line if we would of had a decent offense line he would probably get 2500 yard in one season
This will likely be controversial but imo, Emmitt Smith is the most overrated RB of all time. He played behind the greatest offensive line ever assembled and was often 7 yards down the field before anyone even touched him.
Not controversial at all to me. He was Eric Rhett, but with a great OL.

@@Cristian-vm1bg I would never say that about Irvin, and I only said Emmitt is overrated because of his O-line, he was a great back, but should never be in any argument for the greatest. Aikman definitely benefited from the best O-line ever assembled, but he was also top 5 qb of his era anyway. My main point is that the O-line is criminally underrated in their success.

The problem is that your list is too short. There are many running backs who are as great as the ones on your list. My thought is, if he didn't get injured, Bo Jackson would have been the greatest running back of all time because he didn't appear to be human. He was the fastest brute ever, which is a tough combination.However there were so many others who were otherworldly

@ what’s crazy is I grew up in SC and a Falcons fan. I really got into them around 85, right as he was on his way out. It’s still weird I didn’t hear Falcons old heads sing his praises. He was awesome man, his highlight reel is crazy. I sent it to a couple friends who hadn’t heard of him either, and one grew up in Georgia and still lives there. I fancy myself a pretty knowledgeable fan of anything Atlanta, but you gave me a lesson on my own team. Crazy thing is ai remember all his teammates. Glad I asked that, thanks for the journey.

Emmett was a product of the herschel walker trade. He averaged 2 yds before being touched. AP and barry had noone on their team. Emmet had hall of famers all around him. AP and barry saw 9 in the box every play

Paul Hornung, Gayle Sayers, Larry Czonka, Christian Akoya.... dude hardly went back in time.
As good as those Bears defenses were in the mid 80's, and Payton too... the team couldn't win, especially against elite competition in the playoffs, without a healthy Jim Mcmahon. And with him healthy, they almost literally never lost period. 26-2 including 25 straight wins. You and many others act as if he didn't even exist, and it's irritating to those of us who were actually alive then to see him.
That Bears team almost certainly would have been a dynasty if not for maybe the dirtiest cheap shot ever by Packers player Charles Martin in week 6 of 86. The Bears were undefeated again and had an even better defense statistically. At that time John Madden was heard saying: "If he's not the best QB in the NFL, he's close." Mcmahon was 4-1 lifetime against Montana head to head during that era when healthy. Without a healthy Mcmahon the Niners dominated the Bears on the other hand, 23-0 one time. The Redskins and Giants also dominated the Bears in the playoffs in that era when Mcmahon was out. With him healthy they beat those teams 45-10, and 21-0, respectively.
And before you go holding his inability to stay healthy against him and cite it as a flaw... you might want to actually watch the cheap shot I mentioned above. He was never quite the same since.
Statistically he won't look good to untrained millennial eyes who weren't actually there to see it live. But for those of us who were, well... I welcome you to watch some of their full games with Mcmahon in and see for yourself. Week 3 against the Vikings when he came off the bench is a great example of how the team looked with him in vs out. But watch them all. He was an all time great QB. The most underrated and disrespected one of all time, because of that cheap shot. Things from 86-90 would have been much different if not for Charles Martin.

The amazing thing about Sanders is the fact he ran behind some pretty poor lines... Even in the Lions' best years, the offensive line was average-at-best. What I've always said in discussions about runners... If the QB pitches to Sanders, no hole develops, he goes toward the sideline, and two defenders break through and are chasing him along the line, a safety is coming up, the sideline is getting closer and closer... I call it a fair fight.

Emmit was definitely a great back, but he spent at least 10 years behind one of the best offensive lines in NFL history, compared to Sanders playing behind a mediocre line at best his whole career. The Tyler Rose Campbell was incredible but like Gayle Sayers, had a short career.

I haven't watched this yet but having anyone other than Derrick Henry at #1 would be ludicrous. There have been really fast guys who have been hard to tackle. There have been huge guys who bulldoze defenders but never had there been a RB who could do both let alone being the best at both. One of the biggest backs ever and likely the strongest or one of the strongest he had by far the nastiest stiff arm the sport has ever seen. a 6'3" 250lb back is not supposed to be able to get to the second level and outrun defensive backs (smaller guys who are usually the fastest of any position)
Wrong. Earl Cambell makes Derrick Henry look like an amateur.
There have been boatloads of large fast RBs. Adrian Peterson is far ahead of D. Henry. Henry is very good right now. But saying he's a one of a kind is foolish. Backs like this usually have a short career. And judging by Henry's chicken legs he won't last too much longer. If he can keep it up, he may get there, but 1.5 good seasons in the era of pussyball isn't that impressive. If I were you and touting Henry's strengths, I'd mention his 100 yard dash speed. Henry isn't that fast in the 40, but in the 100 he's pretty hard to catch.

Walter Payton nicknamed Sweetness was the hardest to bring down his stiff arms alone was legendary and you add everything else he should be no#1 Payton could run you over around and over a defense the complete package and could run and catch passes without any drop off in production and he was durable plus didn't miss any games from injuries in his career,Walter ran for 275 rushing yards with the flu at the time a one game record against Minnesota Vikings in 1977.
Only guy on list I'd take time out of my day and pay to see play was Barry Sanders...straight up alien.
Wasn't Derrick Henry supposed to be washed up? Whoops no one told him. Because he is such a unicorn people get confused. They know how many carries RB's usually have before they are through and wrongly applied that to Henry. Henry was different than others he's not the one taking big hits, he's the one giving them out. Not to mention It's like people forget that his first 2 seasons he didn't play nearly as much.
Favorite back is Walter Payton, most elusive, Barry Sanders, toughest to bring down was Earl Campbell. Emmit Smith was a great back but I don't think he belongs on the list. Bo Jackson should be on this list. While all of these runners are great backs, I think there are many more that were harder to bring down than some on this list.
Josh Jacobs is a beast to take down. Watched them play in the wild card game 01/12/2025. He just won’t stop going.
