  • Whiteboard breakdown of Subaru manual transmission shifter assemblies (1990s - Present).
Subaru has used a very similar design for their shifter assemblies for over 30 years - Here’s a breakdown of how they work and how to remove one!

Great video with an easy-to-understand explanation. Perfect timing for me, as I need to remove and replace the linkage u-joint. That's if I can remove those 2 roll pins, which is easier said than done from what I read.

You should do a video with parts needed to upgrade stock shifter fully all pivot bushings and all

I have changed these 4 plastic pivot bushings to new ones in my forester (actually 6 if you cut off the pivot joint axle and replace with a bolt and nut) but after that i heard some hissing noise especially in 4th gear. I think if the joints are too tight some vibrations go into the interior. After some months the bushing came loose and the noise diappered. I found a post in subaru forum, a guy had the same issue after installing some polyurethane race bushing. So noise vs. good shifting, i cannot figured out yet how to solve it.

Can you maybe help me out? on my NA gc8, the whole shifter when in 2nd gear looks like its in neutral, in neutral it looks like first gear, and in first gear it touches the radio. What can that be?!

The early 90's had half of the pivot on the shift rod and the other half on the shifter

I'm surprised he didn't cover the spring at the big bushing at the fixed shaft. As I understand it is on the older GC. The GD has the half moon shape on the same bushing shaft. On that washer with the half moon is there that spring is attached. But the GD / GG don't use the spring. I think the spring connects to top shifting shaft.

I have 2 GCs and both of them have the eyelets for the spring but don’t have the spring. 00 RS and 01 RS. Went to the dealership to get the spring and the parts guy (who has owned over a dozen GCs) was like “yeah I’ll sell you some but FYI I’ve never seen one on any of my cars”
Took them and got frustrated trying to install them and gave up. May try on the 01 or may not cause there’s no eyelet for the spring if you upgrade to the 05+ linkage.
The spring attaches to that big washer and then the linkage/joint directly above it

The spring is a super pain to replace. It can be done from inside when replacing the pivot bushings or joint.

Yes, mine had the same. Big Washer with eyelid for a spring but no spring connecting anything. I’ll have to look into this more and get more educated on it.
