Sterling Ruby is an American contemporary artist. Her style touches several disciplines, Ruby is inspired by socio-economic subjects to create politically charged works. “SUPERMAX 2008,” his 2008 solo exhibition transforms the Los Angeles County Museum of Art into a dense installation that addresses the harsh living conditions of the American prison system and features objects covered in fake blood and polyurethane. The SOFT WORK series (2012) consists of fabric sculptures sewn loosely onto the American flag, his work explores overt patriotism through soft comfort. Born in 1972 on an American Air Force base in Bitburg, Germany, Ruby worked in construction before entering art school, which would help him later in his career. He graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago in 2002, studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, where he worked as a teaching assistant for Mike Kelley and took classes with the theorist and founder of Semiotext (e), Sylvère Lotringer. His work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and MoMA in New York and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
